  • Transmission teardown of the W56 out of my 1986 4Runner. Recently it's been clanking, grinding, whining, and making all sorts of crazy noises in 4th gear, plus other gears. Today I'm taking the transmission apart to get ready it for a rebuild and figure out what's wrong with it. I thought for sure that some gears would be blown, broken, or synchros would be bad or something, but I was wrong! It turned out to be a bad input bearing!
    I could use your guys help in further diagnosing this. This is my first time taking apart a transmission and all I found was the bad bearing. Can that cause the issue you hear in this video? Let me know in the comments below - thanks!!

    Hello RM, I have been following you for a bit, and am getting ready to rebuild a W56 A and a B, my son has a 1985 toy pick up that my dad purchased new in 1985, and I found a 1986 toy 4 runner that I am going to rebuild for me. I have kept the 85 going for decades and am going to keep doing it for as long as I can. But long story short, I wanted to thank you for your very well done and most comprehensive video out there. Very well done. You did not over do anything. You are very specific on the finer points and attention to detail aspect is great. Well done and thanks for your time and effort. Keep making them. You are very good at this and very informative not to mention very easy to listen to. So thanks again!!!!!

    Glad I found your channel… I’m in the process of restoring my 89 (1st gen) 4runner. I stripped it down to the bare frame and starting to prep the frame for paint. I have the transmission out and some seals are leaking but was afraid to pull it apart because I had nothing to visualize the tear down. I’m glad I saw your video to get an understanding of what all it entails. My tranny is working fine, just leaking seals. I may get brave and attempt it myself. Thanks again for posting this.

      The seals are super easy! I would go for it and use Marlin Crawler eco seals.

    i dove into my W56-e from my '94 4x4. Helps alot to have complete FSM for your specific year/model. i didnt have to SST for 5th gear removal, so i simply made a copy by looking at the pic in the FSM (the real SST is around $500+ in you can track one down. I replaced the bearings (all)... Use Toyota's Red FIPG!

    I and a friend of mine both had 1981Toyota SR5 4x4 with five speed (bought new). Both had input shaft bearing problems at low miles just like seen here. Didn't make the same noise shown here at beginning of video. With engine idling clutch out, you could hear excess bearing noise, then push in clutch and noise went away. I took transmission out and took to transmission shop. They replaced input shaft bearing, old one was spalled. Happened again a few years later. Sold the truck. Was a great truck other than transmission problem.

      I ended up rebuilding the whole thing in another video. Worked great! The only failed part was the input bearing. Everything else in pretty good shape.

      Hey Mike, I am experiencing the exact same issues and symptoms you described. Rattling and grinding with the clutch pedal out but not with the pedal in. I just dropped my transmission this afternoon, and was expecting a bad throwout bearing. But it seems that it is this input shaft bearing. How much did it cost to have a shop replace it if you recall? Trying to figure out what is best option for me to get it fixed!

    • @mikejohnson4617
      @mikejohnson4617 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      For me it was a long time ago when shop rates were much less than now and I got Toyota to pay for parts as it was still a pretty new truck. With your transmission already out of truck you have done a good portion of the work. I did some transmission work later through my work and can't imagine a transmission shop with the right tools needing more than 2-3 hrs to replace just the input shaft bearing. But depends what else is worn out. Could be a more extensive problem costing more. Good luck. I always liked my Toyota SR5.@@CalebBramsen

    If the bearing is all that if F'd up then your lucky man. I pulled the case off my w59 because it was making noise in neutral & found that the 1st gear behind the outer bearing was chewed up & missing some teeth as well as the counter gear underneath.

    My 83 L52 tranny did the same noise. Didn’t let me shift into 1,2,3,5. Only went into 4th gear. It was that bearing you mentioned. It had grenaded inside and just fell out. Had to replace my input and cluster shaft.
