4Runner Transmission Problems… Is it Ruined? - Toyota W56

  • My Toyota's W56 transmission was stuck in gear and grinding badly, it sounds like rocks are in the transmission! Obviously, the transmission is bad and needs repair. Today I'm going to be removing the blown transmission from my 1986 1st Gen Toyota 4runner with a 3RZ swap (Uses a W56 with a W59 bellhousing). It got stuck in 4th gear and it's making an insane grinding noise. It's time to take it apart and figure out what the heck is wrong with it. This was one of the reasons I was able to pick this truck up for a pretty good price.
Some of the bellhousing bolts were SO HARD to access, but I ended up using a bunch of extensions to get to those top 2 bolts, and from there I was able to drop the tranny out! Apparently this is the same process for a 22RE + W56, they're just hard to get to! I'm thinking the issue has to be something internal such as synchros or maybe the gears are just bad or broken. I guess we'll find out!

I enjoyed the many humorous (and relatable) struggles to working on these old hogs. Done few tranny swaps ... 🙄 On the side of the road. lol.
If 2 of the gears are pooched you might have to find another donor or core to steal them from and then rebuild into one good one. Looking forward to watchin how you make out with it 🤙🤙

Surprise! The W56 a/b models have that bolt in shifter.
Also for driveshaft bolts I use a wrench on one side and a ratchet or impact with a wobble extension and short socket on the other side. Check out Capri Tools stubby impact sockets. They fit in places you wouldn’t think possible.

Much easier to reach the top bolts by dropping the tranny crossmember it tilts the the bolts down.

You can use a " cheater pipe" to get more leverage on those bolts. It is simply a longer pipe you slip over the wrench or rachet handle. I know it's a year later. But still works.

Unfortunately, there's no getting around it here unless you pay someone to pass it illegally. To top it off, CA compliant cats are all over $1000 and they get stolen frequently.

extra long extensions are the best way to get to those bolts up there. BMW. Mercedes, toyota. It works

For the driveshaft could chock the front wheels. Throw in neutral. Then use the box wrench and a 3/8 impact gun with a swivel socket lol. Ass end lifted can spin the drive shaft easily lol. also for the engine swap stuff definitely dont need bar approval to swap and register your car lmao. Im in cali. As long as you get it smoged your good and you know what im talking about lol

  • @ollie12dog

You probably figure this out already but if you remove the tranny cross-member and let the weight of the tranny sag down you can get to the top tranny bolts with a 2+ foot extension. You may have to losen the motor mount bolts a little to let the tranny sag down more if needed.

with those top two bolts i used a 2' extention and my son was ratching from inside of the truck from the floor where the shifters are.

I have an 89 4runner 3vze 3.0 6 cyl. Automatic transmision began the issue with having to rev it for a minute before it would engage in 1st. Seemed fine after it got going and ok throughout the day afterwards. Then again the next day, the same. It's gotten worse. Is this a symptom of anything other than a new transmission?

Perhaps something broke? Just being sarcastic, haha. I like your videos because you're already involved in the parts of maintenance that I'm trying to stage out for my '89 Pickup. Gonna do a frame up restoration. Any suggestions for things to avoid or mistakes not to make?

@@mikeofthemountain9865 One of the things I've realized working on these old Toyotas is to use Toyota OEM sensors only. For example, when doing a knock sensor on a 3VZE you're playing with fate if you don't get a Toyota sensor >.< Ask me how I know! Nothing else really coming to mind, just don't cut corners and take your time.
