The drop out at the end of your songs almost songs like you are experiencing whatever the opposite of 'gapless' playback is called. I was trying to listen to the 50th Anniversary Dark Side of the Moon recording the other night through the Apple Music App and it was most definitely NOT gapless as it couldn't decide where to break the songs up into individual tracks, causing some not very nice breaks in the songs, which is not what you want on a recording like that. In some cases, this did come off as a slight pause, not just an abrupt break (that said, your 5 seconds is a lifetime for a drop out). My Dark Side experience is the reason why, when I finally bought a new CD transport last month, I chose one that supports gapless playback--had to have it. It's doesn't support DSD or MQA, which is fine by me as long as my CDs play straight through as they were intended.
Respectfully, this is not true. There are new CD players that do not support gapless playback. It’s a buyer beware situation. My understanding is that any player carrying the CD logo is supposed to include the full redbook standard that includes gapless playback but this is not always the case any longer (so your assertion about the standard for gapless playback being inherent to the format is not incorrect, but the adherence to that ideal/standard by all manufacturers is absolutely in question). Recent models that have been reported to not support gapless playback upon release have included the Yamaha 303 and the Arcam cd5 (both of which have also been reported to have been fixed via firmware updates following buyer complaints). I’m going to leave it at that, because I’m not an expert on the subject but kept running into this issue when shopping for a new player/transport, watching online reviews, reading audio forums, and checking tech specs.
I can definitely listen to gapless music via Tidal on my WiiM mini. The Dark Side of the Moon is a great example because I listened to it last week. Even at Max quality there is no interruption whatsoever between tracks if you have the proper settings on the WiiM home app. Turn off fade-in and fade-out effects and you're set.
