Whether you're a country fan or not, Johnny was a truly iconic working man's hero! He never lost his humility or humanity throughout his entire life & career.

Johnny Cash stood up against the Vietnam War when it was risky to do so, especially with his country audience. That's what the "100 fine young men" line is about, and why it got special applause from his young audience.
Quite some elevated consciousness 52 years ago. This is the type of song us older folks grew up with. Hard to think we're still dealing with most of the same issues.

That's why we love him. He knew real suffering, and therefore, empathy. It didn't make him numb, it made him raw and open. Which I reckon is why he had the drug problems.

Now Johnny was not saint. He had his demons and he never lied about them. But that's what makes him genuine. He lived a hard life at times and learned how to live a good life.
This was the moment that Johnny Cash came out against the Vietnam War. I can't stress how huge that was at the time.

Johnny Cash was a wonderful caring man. My brother in law who was working as caretaker at a place for special need. Individuals. Took a group of men under his care to see Johnny Cash in concert and Johnny invited them all back stage after the show. He sat and talked with them and my brother in law for over an hour and let them know how appreciate he was to be able to meet them.
And THAT is why cash was a star.
He was at his height of fame - when he performed this - he truly cared about the poor, imprisoned, wrongly imprisoned and diseased w alcoholism etc.
Did you know that Johnny Cash and Elvis performed together. They also imitated each other. Another wonder video.
You need to listen to "Hurt"...recorded around the time June Carter Cash died and not too long before Johnny died, too.

Remember, he also did 2 prison concerts, first in Folsom and the second in San Quinton. He didn't just talk, he put actions behind his words
Fucking oath. I also know it really hurt him that he couldn't save that one prisoner he befriended, that he just couldn't save the guy.

John lived a very hard life in his young life. He broke free from drugs and Alcohol. Way to go Johnny Cash.
I remember when he did his prison shows in the '60's. The press and others criticized him greatly. But those of us who grew up listening to him, who weren't rich, and were just regular folks totally got it and appreciated it so much. That's when I became a fan. He was very unique and a quality human being. If you ever get a chance to go to his museum in Nashville, do it.
I cannot exaggerate the impact Johnny Cash made on my life. Johnny was a folk singer who found a home in country. Respect.

The heart of a punk, yes. But he's missing the standard issue punk rock clothing and haircut, the standard issue nasally faux-British-accented singing, and the typical nose-in-the-air finger-pointing lyrics.
But other than that, a punk at his core. However without all those other critical elements many would deny him his entry into the hallowed halls of punkrockdom. So Johnny will just have to strum his guitar and sing his songs for the people outside on the streets, like a lowly commoner.

Such a great song. I highly recommend "I Still Miss Someone" and "Flesh and Blood" by him. I also recommend Doug Stone "Better Off in a Pine Box", "In a Different Light", "More Love", and "Little Houses" and Dave Matthews Band "Two Step", "Crash into Me", and "Where Are You Going" and Keith Whitley "I'm No Stranger to the Rain" and "Miami, My Amy".
That's quite a string having little to do with Johnny. But I'll take Crush over Crash any day of the week.
"i still miss someone" is my favorite cash song. that song hits me in the feels every time i hear it.
Johnny was always grateful for what he had and in the end he realized it was all gone.

All my clothes are black as well. Not because of Johnny i just love the color black. Johnny Cash is my hubby's hero. We go to his grave once a month nothing is more humbling than standing in the presence of greatness. Awesome reaction love to you both from Memphis Tn.

I want you to hear “El Paso” by Marty Robbins. An all time classic.
Cash is King!!
This is the one that sets him apart as a writer/thinker.
Though it gets many things wrong, the biopic movie "Walk the Line" will give you a better picture of what he lived through
Don't forget that most of these guys went through drug and alcohol addictions, not unlike every person in the limelight since and before. Often their struggles in life become their lyrics. Thanks
He is singing this in the prison. He did a concert for the prisoners at Folsom Prison.
I was just looking to see if you'd reacted to his version of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" and it looks like Jay did it early on in the channel by himself. I'd HIGHLY recommend revisiting it with Amber and make sure to actually watch the video. And I said that he remade the Nine Inch Nails song....actually Trent Reznor of NIN said that he now considers it a Johnny Cash song, because his version was so worthy.

I love Johnny Cash, he's always been my hero. When I was a little girl my daddy would holler Marie the Johnny Cash Show is on! I'd come running into the living room and plop down in front of the TV. 😁✌❤🎶

This is not only one of my favorite Johnny Cash songs, but one of my all-time favorite songs - and has been all my life. It is timeless & is a social commentary on our world as much today as it was in 1971.

Like Elvis he never forgot where he came from, and this song should be used right now even more.... he stood up for the every man and the downtrodden and we loved him as a result. As so many when they make it stop being outspoken and Cash spoke his mind at ALL times, and for that I respect the MAN as much as his amazing timeless MUSIC. Was a treat to see you both absorb one of the best who ever did it
You guys should watch "I Walk the Line". Its the story of Johnny Cash's life. I think you'd enjoy it on many levels.

His “each week we lose a hundred fine young men” was in reference to the vietnam war, and was extremely contriversial. Country artists, especially of that time, were not expected to resist americas decision to be at war, or involvement in the east. This was a pretty epic statement for jc.

One thing alot of people don't know is johnny was actually part of the military during the Era of the Korean War so he was talking about his brothers who he served with and the ones that came after him
Johnny Cash performed this song in 1967. He became one of the first country singers to be against the Viet Nam War at the time.
"Man In Black" is also the name of his first autobiography. The second was just called "Cash".
When John Carter Cash got married, his father wore a white tux.
There's a documentary movie out called "Tricky Dick and the Man In Black" it's about how Richard Nixon tried to boost his popularity as president by using Johnny Cash as a pawn by bringing him to the White House to perform... if you know Johnny Cash, you know that didn't go over well, but... if you don't review it, you may still want to watch it. It's really good.

At the time politicians were pissed when Johnny came out against the Vietnam war! He always made a distinction that he wasn't against the soldiers, but he was against the sentiment and reasons for going into that war!

At a very low point in his life, Johnny was on drugs and became suicidal. He crawled into a cave to die. What happened in there, he refused to explain. But he came out of the cave some days later and turned his life around.
May we all learn a bit from the man and this song. If those of us who can be strong, do so for those who need it, maybe we can work more toward that world where Johnny would've been able to wear that suit of white.
Believe it or not this is from his network TV variety show. That Vietnam War shout out had to cause heartburn at corp HQ. But that was Johnny. He called it as he saw it.

Just took a vacation to Nashville, we went to the grand ole opry on the anniversary of Johnny cash’s death, the show was a tribute to him and it was amazing , so many artists were inspired by him

At the time, the Vietnam War was still going, and the pointed anti-war lyrics would have been the ones that hit home hardest. For a mainstream star like Cash to directly criticize the war was a big deal, especially for a country singer.
Love me some Johnny. He’s been my favorite country artist since I was old enough to appreciate music, 7 or 8 years old

Something special about Johnny Cash, his ability to cross not only music lines but cultural & societal as well. The lyrics here are so very relevant today. Isn’t it odd we are still so far away from unity? I would argue we’re father back these days, having become more divided than ever. (Y’all add “Walk the Line” to your movie reactions, it’s about his life, his overcoming the demons that haunted him. I only wish they would have depicted his turn to Christ after his interaction with Billy Graham but that’s not PC…still…)

CASH owns everything he is and he has done 👍.
My dad is a fan of Johnny Cash, the man in black. I heard his songs before I could talk. Have you heard "Jackson" yet? A duet by Johnny Cash and his second wife June Carter. It's a fun song.
"Looks like you're going to a funeral." ... "Well maybe I am." There's wisdom in them, there words. If not heard yet, next I'd suggest "My Grandfather's Clock."
Did you know Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan did a duet of “The Girl From North Country”?

You should watch the Walk The Line movie about his life. Joaquin Phoenix played Johnny Cash and Reese Witherspoon played his wife, June Carter Cash. Great movie!

"I've Been Everywhere" is a brain-busting song because Johnny manages to name one city after another after another after another after another, all in the span of a few minutes.

The cheer halfway through was because he was drawing attention to those that had died in Vietnam. Next try The Baron, another JC story song.
This song has so many meanings. It's always been one of my favorites. I was raised in Hendersonville. When we first moved there it was still a small country town. It wasn't long until we saw him in the front pew of the First Baptist Church. It wasn't much longwr til they couldn't come anymore. But he and June Carter on occasion would still stop by the HG Hills grocery store. The only store in town. Then that had to go by the wayside too. Then Hendersonville wasn't a country town anymore.
The Man in Black still has meaning today.
Even though he's thought as a country musician I've found that his songs have a lot of folk characteristics - and have a lot of depth into them

Greetings from Finland! I had a ”Johnny Cash phase” in my mid-twenties. Ididn’t listen to anybody else but him for a whole year straight and i personally, i think it made me a better person. His songs, stories and perspective really made me view my own beliefs and preconceived notions differently. A true influencer and inspiration ✌🏻

When he gets to the Vietnam war reference about "losing a hundred fine young men this week" his voice breaks up a bit - not sure from anger or nerves (It was a big thing for a popular singer to speak out in his music about the war). It's fine song and a fine performance and yes, Johnny was a moody and difficult man at times - but he was and always will be an undisputed musical treasure.
