Great song.when he sang about loosing a 100 fine young men every day. He referring to us soldiers who were fighting in Vietnam. Very few people back then stood up for us. Most singers only sang songs about hating us. We had no choice we were drafted. We hated that war more than them. Our government also betrayed us.

This is why I love Johnny Cash so much. He was always straight up with people. He didn't hide his own struggles with us. We still love him to this day. He will always be remembered. I cried so hard the day his video Hurt came out. I knew he was saying goodbye 😢

Theres some context that you need to really appreciate whats going on here. Cash is performing on a college campus at the height of the Vietnam War. College campuses were hotbeds of progressive views and most students ardently opposed the war, going so far as to look down on the men who served in it. Cash sings that he wears black for all the lives lost and received thunderous applause from the audience. He knew he would get that reaction from affirming their feelings about the war. Its what he does next thats amazing. He uses that credibility that he just gained with the audience to stare them down and belt out that he also wears the black for all the men who died believing that we all were on their side. Then he drops into a lower and more quiet sound to let the audience sit there with their feelings about what he just said. Hes directly challenging his young audience to think about their actions and views and the impact its having on the nation and the young men who are serving, often not by choice. Not many performers could get away with making an audiemce uncomfortable like that and have it received in the spirit that it was intended.
My Great Aunt was very proud of the fact that she was at this show. She attended Southern University and was not familiar with Johnny Cash but all her friends were interested in going. She became a huge JC fan. She passed away quite some time ago, but I always think about her when I hear this song.
Johnny Cash was just that Johnny Cash. He was never fake and he was never afraid to tell people what he believed.

This was on his television show in Nashville for a group of local Vanderbilt University students in 1971, so that's why he said he walked around campus talking to them and then wrote the song because many wanted to know why he only dressed in black. I was in college in 1969-1970 just before going into the Army and it was a turbulent time on campus with Vietnam protests, etc.

Hi Britt. This was a segment he did about a concert he played at a college. He toured the school and had lots of conversations with the kids. John was a good friend of Bob Dylan and a few other folk singers. John considered some of his songs folk songs as well (and they are). This was a time when we faced every day the news of all our losses in Viet Nam, and we faced drug abuse in America as well and racial prejudice from both sides as we sadly still do. This was John reporting on the state of things. Great reaction yet again Britt. Keep having fun with it. Stay safe and well and adorable.

Johnny Cash was a rebel. He sang social justice type songs and he didn’t care what the industry thought. If you have not reacted to “Hurt” by Johnny Cash, I would highly recommend it. It came out not too long before he died. Between his voice, the lyrics, and the video it is very powerful. Just make sure to have tissues handy.
Johnny Cash became in the 1960s and 1970s particularly an artist who was willing to ignore or go beyond the boundaries of "country music tradition" and sing songs of protest like this. He also did shows in places others wouldn't, like Folsom Prison and San Quentin prison. A couple in a similar vein: Sunday Morning Coming Down and San Quentin both by Johnny Cash and In The Ghetto and If I Can Dream by Elvis. There is a song, by Johnny's former son in law, Rodney Crowell, called "Walk the Line, Revisited"... It is a song about his discovery of Johnny's music when he was young, and is centered around Johnny's song, "Walk the Line"... It also features some very early footage of Johnny, BEFORE he became the man in black... A great tribute to a man he always admired...

Johnny really was a folk singer with a true rebel heart.
Cash came from abject poverty. He started picking cotton with his family at five. At 8 or 9 his brother died in a really nasty work accident; being cut almost in half by a table saw, for which he felt guilty to his death. He was an addict for much of his life, and spent many a night in prison. He knew hard times.
Johnny Cash spent his whole fighting for the underdog. He was honest about his own struggles with addiction, etc.
He was always known after this as The Man In Black.
Please do his song Ira Hayes. It's about one of the Marines who raised the flag in WWII at Iwo Jima.

There's a few songs that need to put on a continuous cycle and played at society today, one is this song the other is Elvis "If I can Dream". For a lot of reasons. Johnny Cash is such an amazing artist always sang a straight forward statement one that a lot of people need to hear and relate to.

Two more of his songs that you might want to check out are “ Ballad of Ira Hays”( which is a true story), and “Sunday Morning Coning Down”( written by Kris Kristofferson, who gave it to Johnny Cash, where it became a huge hit). I always wear black. I lived in Vietnam off and on for 2 years, and one of the Street Sellers told me "Everybody knows you because you wear black everyday." Lol

"The Ballad of Ira Hayes" is another great one.
The edge of his guitar..."Bedazzling" is what's called binding, and purfling. Binding is a plastic edge (or wood, or other material) that holds the two corner edge pieces of wood together, a premium feature, and another border beyond that, for beauty, is Purfling. His Purfling in particular includes Abalone inlays, which are crushed sea shells, that reflect light in various colors. Abalone inlays are a common upscale feature on guitars. Others include mother or pearl, or fake mother of pearl (Pearloid). No matter what the value of the guitar is, the fact that he played it even once, let alone in an iconic clip like this, far surpasses the core value of the instrument.
Songs, for the most part are a story. However, as Sonny Curtis said in one of his verses, of "the real buddy holly story" That line is "they had a whole movie to tell their story, but all I've got is a song, and my storys got to rhyme "

I wore black for over 15 years because of this song. His music helped shape who I am.
The greatness of the moment, is the prior interactions he was having with anti-war protesters. He didn't understand why these good hearted students didn't support "the good guys" who were fighting in the war. Rather than dismiss them, he opened his heart to their feelings. That lead to his own introspection about his own feelings he had not considered, resulting in an explanation for why he wears black, when he himself had never thought why. He knew he wore it because he felt down, but he didn't know WHY he felt down, and the result is this amazing song. Those kids didn't change Johnny, they awoke him, to the realization he agreed with them all along, in his heart, he just hadn't been listening to it.
I believe the outline of his guitar is ivory... or something meant to look like ivory. I could be wrong.

This is one of my favorite Johnny Cash song ever. Also, if you love watching artists go into detail about inspiration for their songs, Shinedown did this at their live in Kansas City tour for a bunch of their classic hits. Really moving stuff, especially if you've never heard of them or their music before. Another band I highly recommend is Delta Rae. Their sound changes a bit depending on who's singing because they have four main singers, but it's great.
Those were such horrible years in the country. Funerals every week, across all big cities and small towns, for young men who died in some hot swamp on the other side of the world. And for nothing.

My favorite Johnny Cash song my grandpa would sing this on his front porch picking his guitar and I'd just sit there wide eyed and listen. Didn't know the words but I was just happy to sit there and spend time with him. Man life being four was fantastic.

Johnny Cash, Legend of all Legends. You mentioned the reaction of the audience. Young people always seemed mesmerized by his sincerity and depth. He hosted Saturday Night Live and the cast treated him like he was a God. The show ended with him singing "Sunday Morning Comin' Down" and the entire cast (including Eddie Murphy) was seated at his feet out of respect. Legend Indeed.

Johnny Cash performed this song when the U.S. was in the midst of the Vietnam war - that's the significance of the line, "Each week we lose a hundred fine young men." And it was kind of a courageous stand to take as a good number of folks in the country music fan base were politically conservative and didn't take well to people protesting America's involvement in the war.
Until maybe THEIR kid came home in a pine box....some had 2nd thoughts after that.

Johnny Cash grew up poor as many Country Artist. He and his wife June were great humanitarian. He and Waylon Jennings also stood up to the big wigs in Nashville. They wanted more control over their content and they got it.

Cash wrote some great songs back in the early to the late 60's.... try and find GIVE MY LOVE TO ROSE....HEY PORTER...HOW HIGHS THE WATER MAMA....GET RHYTHM....Luther Perkings played Lead guitar then....and has that freight train rhythm.....to name a few. I used to see him at Spring Lake Amusement park in Oklahoma City. It cost 25 cents to get into the park and the Johnny Cash show was free....a stage and we sat on the grass.....Jerry Lee Lewis...Conway Twittiy and lots of country singers came thru town
Hundreds if not thousands of songs from the 60s and 70s carried the theme of protest against the systems that ignored the plight of all. One of the things that never fails to amaze me is the thought by each generation that they are the first to see injustice and try to overcome it.
The last song that he recorded before he passed away "Hurt" is amazing. His wife is in the video. She passed away first then him not long after.
"What Is Truth?" Johnny Cash song...he gave a voice to youth with their long hair at the time, opposing the Vietnam War, not being listened to...BTW You look good in any color clothing....and yeh, the peace sign you gave they used tp practically arrest us for in the mid 1960's to about 1973. among other things.

Johnny Cash is one of country musics greatest singer, song writers and artist. Started in Memphis at sun records after Elvis Presley. The two worked together and were good friends.
Some folks nowadays seem to think country artists shouldn't get political. But one of the greatest country music artists of all time was VERY political. Importantly, he was educated on issues, and had compassion and love for people from all walks of life. For a similar song, check out "The Ballad of Ira Hayes".

Right there is the closest Johnny Cash ever came to writing a hippie ballad. He performs quite a few songs that could be described as "protest" songs, written by himself or others, but this one really is a ballad of the times he was living in...a reflection of his times and his experiences and since he first performed it, it has been a standard to which all the rest are judged. It's my favorite Cash-penned song.
To me, the greatest songs, the ones that really stand the test of time, can be performed by any artist, in any genre, and still have the words reach out and touch the listener. I could listen to a heavy metal band perform this, in their style...and it would be a powerful cover. I could listen to it performed slower, softer, by a pop or country-pop artist...and it would be a powerful cover. I could listen to folk singers perform this, blues artists perform this, punk rockers perform this...and each one would be incredible, because the underlying message in the words is so powerful, so universal, and so meaningful. At least, that's what I believe.
If this were written and performed today, I'm sure many other exploited and overlooked classes would have been included in the lyrics...immigrants, homosexuals, human trafficking victims, abused children, who knows.
You ought to check out his song "When The Man Comes Around". Gives me hope that at least a few of the great artists of modern times will make it to heaven, I'm as sure as a mortal man can be that he'll be there, finally wearing white.

Johnny Cash grew very poor. His father hated and looked down on him. But Johnny loved the Lord and never gave up on his father.. He always stood up for what he believed in. He was a good man.

Many of JC's songs sought to raise the social conscience. Another great example is Ira Hayes, a real person, a native American who served and loved his country, although his country didn't always show love for him.

I have followed this same mantra for so long I can't even remember when I started. But it was sometime in my late teens or early 20s, so for over 30 years at least. Note the black T-shirt in my avatar. I wear nothing but black, every day, to the point I've even had people ask me if I ever change my clothes. I don't remember if it was because of this song or not but it was largely from the outlaw persona set forth by the outlaw country genre in general. The fact that I have always been a black sheep, in my family, among my community and in society in general. I grew up with Johnny Cash's music and always gained guidance from it. I have always tried to do what was right, even when it wasn't what was popular, but somehow always paying a terrible price for the stands I make. I haven't made anywhere near the impact Johnny Cash or many others have but I have resigned myself to continue on the same path no matter how much it costs me, and have accepted that paying that price is my mission and purpose in life. In order for peace and joy to exist sadness and strife must exist. I accept the burden of carrying that sadness and strife so others can carry the peace and joy. Johnny may be gone, and you may never see me, but there is still a man here carrying the darkness on his back.
