Fun fact: The United Kingdom's entry for the 1974 Eurovision Contest placed 4th. The artist's name? Olivia Newton-John.
Another fun fact: ONJ had a tv special in 1978 on ABC with guests Andy Gibb (younger brother of the 3 Gibbs that made up the Bee Gees) and ABBA! You can find the special here on TH-cam.

Love this song; love this group! I can't wait until y'all have reacted to all of ABBA's songs that are in the musical Mamma Mia! so you can finally react to that movie musical too 😁 Then you can start working on their songs that are in their second movie musical, Here We Go Again. 😁😁😁
    Okay, here's your goal:
These are all the ABBA songs you need to hear because they're in the first movie musical Mamma Mia!:
Lay All Your Love on Me
    Super Trouper
    Honey, Honey
    The Name Of The Game
    SOS
    Our Last Summer
When All Is Said And Done
    The Winner Takes It All
    Mamma Mia
Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)
    Money, Money, Money
    Thank You for the Music
    Take A Chance On Me
    Voulez-Vous
    I Have a Dream
    Dancing Queen
    Slipping Through My Fingers

Like so many families, we watched Eurovision every year, and as soon as they sung this, I said, 'This is the winner'. I cannot remember any other song from that year, just that this stood out massively. When it was released as a single, it went mad. This was in the middle of Glam Rock, so they fitted right in without being part of it.

And yet it so nearly didn’t happen. The original Swedish entry was dropped after getting into legal troubles and the Swedish network approached ABBA to fill in; having failed to make the cut the previous year, and feeling pretty unhappy about it, they were initially reluctant, but their record company “persuaded” them to go for it.

In the early '70s, very few musical groups were making videos for their songs. Benny and Bjorn figured out early that music TV shows would play these clips and promote their songs. Since ABBA was an international group, these clips were played all around the world and helped make the band even bigger. It was a brilliant move, since was a whole decade before MTV.

@@MIKECNW I never said she was an expert. Just that with Abba, Dancing Queen seems to be the groups best known & most popular track with the public & judging by Amber saying that 'everyone knows Dancing Queen' beforehand (when they reacted to another video). that it could be the one track they already knew from Abba before reacting to other tracks which they didn't know.
People constantly ask Amber & Jay in comments whenever they do an Abba track to react to Dancing Queen & they haven't so far & I suggested it could be because they already know it so can't give a genuine first reaction of the song. However while (possibly) knowing the song they may not have seen the Dancing Queen video, so could react to that & in this way it would still make many who want to see their reaction to that song happy.

"Waterloo" (1974) is one of my favorites, and is in my Top 5 of all ABBA songs
(with S.O.S. , Dancing Queen, The winner takes it all & Don't shut me down)
and I think that is the song that change history,
not only for ABBA, for Sweden and Eurovision too
"Waterloo" was the song that ABBA wrote especially to participate
in the annual Eurovision Song Contest
By the rules of the competition the songs could not exceed 3 minutes (that its 2:46)
    and ABBA made a masterpiece!
ABBA sing it in Swedish, for the local selection in Sweden (February 1974)
and finally ABBA sing it in English in the final held in England (April 1974)
before 16 interpreters and songs from all over Europe.
"Waterloo" and ABBA win Eurovision for the first time for Sweden
It will be Their first big worldwide hit: #1 in UK and half Europe (also South Africa),
and Top 10 in U.S., Canada, Australia , New Zealand and the rest of Europe
    ABBA recording "Waterloo" in
    swedish, english, german and french
Several years later, in 2005, to the 50th Eurovision anniversary,
"Waterloo" was chosen as the Best Song in all the history of Eurovisión
i hope you have a nice week

It wasn't a big hit but has really become a cult fan favourite over the years - with much speculation about what the song is really about.

Another great song of theirs is So Long ( see you honey ) , which doesnt get the recognition for how good it actually is . A bit of history about ABBA is that it wasnt the first time ABBA tried to enter Eurovision. In Sweden they have what is called " Melodifestivalan", where the people of Sweden pick the act they want to represent Sweden at Eurovision. In 1973 ABBA entered Melodifestivalen with the song Ring Ring and finished in 3rd place with just 8 points and 29 points behind the eventual winner. Then we all know what happened the next year, ABBA won the competition with a staggering 302 points , 89 points ahead of the 2nd placed artist

@@erroristmusic Too true. It's a shame though, especially given the whole reason the ESC started was to bring people together with music and it seems to be becoming less and less about the music with each passing year.
I like to do a "blind" listening to the songs prior to the competition if I can (since most songs are released ahead of time), I pop them into a playlist, set it to shuffle and don't look at the names of the artist/song/country...etc. I just assign each a number, rate the songs and check to see who did what afterwards. It's really interesting, as even if they do sing in their "native" language it's not necessarily always obvious who sang what (i.e. French is common to several countries and a song can be sung in any language really, regardless of which country the representing singer is from).

Since most of the Scandinavian countries are celebrating ABBA's 50th anniversary these days, I thought it might be a good idea for you to make a reaction to "ABBA: The Movie". It's a movie shot during their trip to Australia and the managers idea was to make a movie, without the ABBA members being aware of it, the only "actors" were the "journalist" and a "bodyguard". The ABBA members were told, the cameras were for for a documentary...It's a feel good movie, that really shows, how big ABBA was in Australia. Australia opened ABBA's road to fame, after the win at the Eurovision Song Contest, their music was refused to be played on air, since they were written of as a one hit wonder, as most of the Eurovision winners. Even in their native Sweden, they didn't get any air time for a year and a half, until the Australian tour, when the UK opened their eyes for the ABBA mania, which was followed up by 19 consecutive ABBA hits!!!
