  • Two teams of building movers attempt two remarkable rescue missions - hauling a 31 metre tall lighthouse off a crumbling cliff edge on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts, and moving a Swedish town before it collapses into a mineshaft - and before the arctic winter weather sets in.

The idea of moving an entire town before it collapses sounds like a fascinating and logistically intense operation, often featured in shows like "Huge Moves" on Spark. Such relocations typically occur due to environmental threats, economic decline, or the structural instability of the land on which a town is built.

This is absolutely amazing engineering and completely fascinating as well. Fantastic to witness. The first time i ever heard of something like this was in Old Exeter in Devon, ( in England ), where they have an Elizabethan building that was repositioned from the bottom of a hill to the top and its called "THE HOUSE THAT MOVED", it was moved in 1961.

I dont see why they needed the crane. A few good sized boys should have been enough depending on how far it was being moved. Its very bulky but not all that heavy. Why do you think its called a light house?

🤣 this is hilariously fascinating and completely insane at the same time - the lighthouse move was impressive, but looked easy compared to taking a little drive with the enormous house down the high street and just “hoping” it would squeeze through … ah humans, what will we think of doing next?! 😝🤪

Amazing to move a town shame they lost their original address. Imagine each group of houses from each st had been kept together and remained the same. It would be so quirky to have one rd with multiple streets on it and the corresponding numbers. It's not like it's a major city or that the locals would get lost

My deep n great respect to ALL the teams doing this amazing work, the Lighthouse for me was the greatest as I was shivering almost wishing everything goes well till the end, I know absolutely Nothing zero about our amazing work guys, but as the lighthouse was oving I was wondering whyit didn't have a steal sheathing on the outside n the inside since the shape is cylindrical the outside with edges with bolts n the inside also with bolts the inside pushing out n the outside squeezing that might have kept this lovey lighthouse a little safer when it was moving? sorry guys is probably a totally stupid Idea but I didn't want anything to go wrong with tht lovely old lighthouse, all in all a trully Great job guys

For the mining town, I get people would lose the "1st" floor of their house, but wouldn't it have made more sense to just move the upper floor of the home and put it on a new basement with the same floorplan if they wanted it the same? Especially after finding out the basements are part of the bedrock and the floors and walls aren't attached to each other, it seems like more work than necessary. Really, those are all 1 story houses, built on exposed basements with walkout garage and entrance.

The alternative is to remove the energy from the sea waves that will hit the base of the cliff by establishing long weed on the seabed and bobbing generating ducks at the surface. This will improve fish environment and generate energy.

Call me silly but if they engineered half a dozen or so floor plans to choose from and built them with "Structural Insulated Panels" (SIP's) which means they could be prefabricated at a warehouse in the new town and they would weigh a fraction of the current houses with insulation 'R" values probably 3-4 times greater than they have now for less than the moving The current homes and all the associate's hassles, and nightmare problems. The cinder blocks and cement driveways could be reprocessed for foundation, road and driveway materials and the town would have all new structures with modern standards of energy efficiency
