      Haha, the first step is admitting you have a problem.

    Your instrument is not a uniforming cilindrical bore. The splicing changes the diameter multiple times although small but those diferences add up on the extremes. That in tune F might have the nodes on the splicing ( this bit is a guess )
    I have had similar problems.
    Also the end doesnt cone out. Which makes the bell quiet abrupt
    To correct this if you are still interested heat the pipe with hot sand ( cooked in a oven. There are videos on how to bend pvc pipes with sand ) and you will get a uniform diameter in a large cilindrical bore.

      Interesting insights! I still think having a conical bore would keep the intervals from getting too spread but I agree that the joins can cause a lot of idiosyncrasies. One of these days I'll attempt some of those pipe bending techniques.

      Mine is just a simple loop made with a single piece of pipe(not counting mouthpiece or funnel). I used a heat gun to make the pipe plyable and formed it into a loop.

      It's definitely the shape of the bore. On a real trumpet, about 2/3 of the tubing is cylindrical, while 1/3 of the tubing is conical. On this PVC trumpet, only the bell is conical.

    I think i solved your problem instead of pipe conectors you use a hosepipe instead i tried on my pvc natural trumpet and it worked but im not the greatest trumpet player so i can t really play particulary high wich is super important on baroque repertoire

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass

      I think the hosepipe would definitely help some, but all the tuning will still be cylindrical, which I would guess would throw some of the tuning off.

    hey i built a pvc bugle ver similar to yours same sized piping but a 5c mouth peice i’m not able to get that reallly good tone you have i get a muffled tone and it can’t hit all of the notes

  • @OlaftheGreat
    @OlaftheGreat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why use all those fittings when you can just use a heat gun? Mine is just a pipe I made a loop of with heat, an adapter for the mouthpiece, and a plastic funnel. I glued/taped it all together, painted it (mostly) gold, and added a carrying strap out of nylon rope. It actually sounds pretty good. I would reccomend simplifying your design.

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good idea! The fittings did seem to be part of the intonation issue, so maybe someday I’ll try this again with a heat gun.

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nearly. It's not quite perfect, unfortunately, but it's what is usually referred to as 'absolute pitch.' It's more similar to perfect pitch than relative pitch.

    Thanks for a terrific video! My daughter is trying to build something like this and is trying to find the right PVC pipes that will fit her mouthpiece. What size/type of PVC pipes did you use?

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you enjoyed! Trumpet building is finnicky business. The smallest diameter of pipe I could find at the local ACE was 0.5", but most trumpets have an actual bore size around 0.46". See if you can find anything smaller than half an inch, but if that's the smallest they have, it's the best you can do.

  • @travisolsonmusic
    @travisolsonmusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did you ever have any luck solving the fundamental issue?

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The issue is in the fact that this instrument is purely cylindrical, so I know what the issue is but I have no way of solving it. I've made a semi-successful D natural trumpet but the bottom notes are definitely still flat. However, the baroque trumpet never uses the bottom three partials so it kind of works.

    • @travisolsonmusic
      @travisolsonmusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SamuelPlaysBrass I see then. Have you ever experimented with drilling tone holes into the PVC to create more notes?
