    Adopting "BFS Fishing Japan - Style" and applying it to an English small trout stream made for a wonderful fishing trip this spring. Although I caught some fish on a more classic style flat-sided minnow hard bait, I wasn't getting as good a hook-up proportion as I'd like. Lots of trout were nipping or flashing at the bait without getting hooked.
    Switching over to a smaller, soft bait (a 50-mm Fat Ass and 1.5-g Cheb head) increased my hook-up rate. But - it didn't stop the hook pulling free from a lively jumping fish as you can see in slow motion in the video!
    Casting the light lures (weighing between 1.68-g and 2.5-g in total) with a custom S-glass rod and ultralight baitcaster reel with a spool weighing just over 6g is a lovely finesse experience. The Bait Finesse System style of casting relies so much on loading the rod and allowing it to straighten and throw the bait for you. It's a very satisfying feeling when the lure flies out just right.
    The light line, light lures and low casting angle (plus the control of the lure during flight - and as it lands) can create a very soft and subtle splashdown; when you get it right. That helps to avoid spooking trout - and in fact, just the right amount of "plop" can get a fish to look towards your bait - rather than cause it to run away!
    Dedicated barbless single hooks (on hard baits) and either barbless or de-barbed single hooks on soft baits make it much easier to release a trout without having to grip it hard and remove protective slime. The hook in this video is debarbed - with the point of the barb squashed against the shank - though there is a gap between the centre section of the barb and the shank (so you can see daylight in a central "bridge" shaped section of the barb). The curved bend of this hook pattern makes it a little more difficult to competely flatten the barb throughout its full length. However, Nine Seven Tungsten tell me that they can source barbless equivaltents of these hooks...
    Also, the mouths of trout are put together a little differently from the mouths of pike, bass, perch and other fish. Treble hooks seem very prone to damaging the maxilla bone (the upper, outer jaw bone) of trout, so I prefer not to use trebles when targeting trout.
    For predators with larger mouths treble hooks can be appropriate. In fact, for pike, they are sometimes better than large single hooks since they tend to sit in one spot - rather than (potentially) sawing to and fro on thin connective membranes.

    Awesome trout fishing I love trout fishing too bad around here the population has declined so much I am a young kid I do a TH-cam channel for fishing called fish for dinner I recently just did some trout fishing and there was none there and just last year I was there and there was lots as catching them about five at a time each time I went now there is known and here they do not stalk at all not even once so it is all on the anglers to keep a steady population I live watching trout fishing such beautiful fish I recently caught my pb bass though 38 inches long!! Monster bass

    Excellent casting. So, you can keep casting in the same area despite pulling out a fish beforehand?

    • @FishingDiscoveries
      @FishingDiscoveries  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can carve up the features into quite a few separate lies for different fish in water like this Neil. Plus fish will follow the lure back from its lie and grab it at any point during the retrieve. So, even casting to separate points, you might get "hit" by a fish in similar area on different casts.

    Excellent video, needs to be longer 😁. How far can you cast the zoner minnow with that rod? I'm thinking of getting one to pair with my calcutta conquest.

    • @FishingDiscoveries
      @FishingDiscoveries  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the reel: I mostly fish zoners (50mm suspension) with my tuned Ambassadeur 2500C on that rod and I'd say it goes around double the longest cast you can see in this video with good control. I'd need to cast it against a tape to get a proper figure though.

      Thank you very much for the quick reply. I just noticed on another of your videos that you also own the tsurinoya ares, I've been trying to get this rod for a while but it's never in stock on Ali express. I know your custom glass rod is a completely different material but does it cast the lighter lures as good as the ares? At the moment I have a MC finetail stream, MC troutino and a ace hawk Cu double. But from what I've read the ares seems to be the perfect rod for the lighter lures, which is what I'm looking to do. @@stukatchoo6784 The Ares casts those light lures really well - though the self-loading of the S-glass rod is nearly impossible to beat for casting light lures.

    Can I please ask where you got your shoulder strap for the landing net from?

    • @FishingDiscoveries
      @FishingDiscoveries  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It actually came with the net, but it is just thick "shirring elastic" with a small karabiner at one end and a split ring at the other. You can probably buy all those components on Amazon... good luck, Paul.

    Is there a casting rod similar to this one i can get under $200?

    • @FishingDiscoveries
      @FishingDiscoveries  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there is, it isn't one that I'm aware of... While there are some glass rods on Aliexpress, they seem to flex much more in the middle and have tips that don't work to the same degree. Plus, the S-glass blanks are an important part of how well they cast. Perhaps it might be possible for you to build (or have someone build) a glass rod from a suitable blank? That might be a lure blank or, possibly, a section of a fly fishing rod blank... Even then, you might be looking at a spend of around/at least $200, depending on the components you choose to add to the rod (and whether you're going to have to pay someone else to build it for you...).
