This video literally changed my life. I had already been fly fishing for months and was pretty confident with my roll casts.....until I watched this video. Simon does such a good job of explaining the “why” in fly casting. Everyone tells you what to do, but give really vague reasons that beginners may not understand. Hands down, best fly casting technique video I’ve seen thus far.

In addition to the roll cast, I love the way he manages his line to position it before the cast. So smooth and effortless looking.

The absolute best fly fishing video on the roll cast. The roll cast looks simple but without understanding the principles it is difficult to do properly. The information in the video is incredibly well presented and clearly explained. Videography is sheer perfection. You see critical information from two angles that makes proper technique easily understandable. A great companion to this video is Chapter 6 of Lefty Kreh’s seminal book “Fly-Casting Fundamentals”, published by Stackpole Books.

I wish TH-cam was available when I tried to learn to fly fish in the late 1980s. I must have left $20.00 of flies in trees and brush in my attempts to roll cast. I'm still worried that there will be someone with a smartphone watching me who will reward my laughable casts and the video will go viral. It seems that most people don't expect to see a woman fly fishing, so I already attract attention.

God, I wish I had found Simon a lot sooner LOL Believe it or not, I have been fly casting for near 25 years on and off, amongst my other angling pursuits. Brilliant tutorial, so clear and easy to follow and I have found it very easy to put into practice on the bank. You obviously have a gift when it comes to breaking these techniques down into a very easy to follow step by step lesson. Thank you so much. I have never been able to roll cast at all until now :) I surprised myself, what's puzzling, is that I have watched countless people roll cast and an endless amount of video on how to ? but never had any kind of success putting this into practice myself, until now !!! thank you so, so much Simon. I will be watching all your other tutorials with great pleasure, Jim, Dumfrieshire.

Great video, very informative. I just got back into fly fishing this summer after a very long time.
I was out fishing this morning and ran into this exact dilemma. Trees and brush right behind me and not 20-25'' in front of me fish jumping like crazy. I just could not get any straight forward direct casts.
I will definitely be practicing this roll cast technique. I need this "play" in my playbook 😎👍

Superb video. Best I’ve seen on the roll cast. One question on the “train tracks “. If casting across the stream and the line gets swept downstream on the drift then when you want to cast across again it seems unavoidable that there will be a significant angle between where the line is on the pick up and the desired direction of your next roll cast.

I can cast from either hand! Can I use this to my advantage? I was just wondering how. I might be slightly more precise when I cast from my left hand but other than that it is very similar. When casting from a boat it is very handy specially if we are two to fly fish.

I loved this video and have watched it multiple times. However, an explanation on how to get you line back up stream, yet not doing too much angle or crossing the train track would be helpful. As when discussing the "train Track" this video shows him demonstrating it down river every time. Well, I want to take my down river line and now roll cast it back up river. How can I do this with the roll cast? Or can I at all?

What this video, and others on the subject, never talk about is how to get the line out in the water to begin with. Yes, you can try to throw a bit of line out into moving water, feed some line, and let the water carry line out. But that does not always work. Also, what about still water? Since there is no current how do you get a roll cast started? Please advise. Thanks.
