The ignition release on the steering column is actually meant to be able to replace the ignition tumbler and yes this is a temporary fix. But most likely the main problem is in that gear Shift Interlock Solenoid. when the car is in gear the solenoid sends a signal to your ignition telling the ignition that the car is in gear and not to release the key. so if that solenoid is gummed up from spilling to many drinks down into your gear shift that solenoid is probably not disengaging. Simple fix disassemble the gear shift cover enough to spray some cleaner on that solenoid and any luck you won't have to replace the Shift Interlock Solenoid.
I had a similar problem with a 1995 Chevy Silverado in where I could not take the key out. On the third trip to the dealer and having my P.U. for a week, they found that it was a so called "bitsy" cable that was loose and when putting it in park was not taut enough to release the lock on the steering column.
I hope this help there is a fuse 10 amp under the left rear seat on the fuse box that read IGN O check it and replace it if necessary that is the common problem for this issue

Do you think that as a temporary fix I could press the "release switch" that you mentioned to remove the key? Thank you for your time.
Pull the plastic down a little bit under the column, stick your finger on the release pin and push up ☝, use other hand to turn the key back. I've been fingering it for a year but you can add a spring push switch into the plastic and make it look like it belongs there. BANG ALL DONE

I put a new ignition in my blazer and the key turned for about a day or two and now it won't turn idk what the problem is but I need help figuring it out this isn't my problem
Look out buddy ol' pal....could this actuator be the cause for all my accessories to malfunction or not turn on at all?....please help I done installed a new ignition switch behind the switch no key tumbler...please help
Check your wiring from the PCM to the Engine fuse box, the plastic circles holding the wiring harness in place and the actually plastic sheathing rubbing against each other can wear the insulator off one of the wires for communications. Now there's allot of diag to get to that point but there's a channel called "South main auto" Eric O is the one of the best Technicans I have seen on here. He doesn't preach the expensive perfect world remedy to your said issue. Just the proper way to fix it with simplicity in mind. Anyhow I randomly started having ignition problems, ended up burning out my starter. But I watched his video on explaining the wiring for the ignition signal and the Envoy he was working on had the same trouble codes and running condition mine did. Watched the video and took a educated guess on the wiring, pulled back the sheathing and sure enough the Ground for the signal wire for the ignition was about 75% worn through, actually heated the wire and had to cut a good bit out. Just took a butt connector, Fluid film and electrical tape and the thing has been running fantastic.
I apologize I couldn't find anything helpful online and just diagnosed it and posted it. I did everything on my phone since my laptop was down. Will do better next time thank you

I cut a hole in my colume under for that little button. Been this way for almost 2 yrs. Because i also had to figure out myself what this issue was.
Theres already a hole there from the factory for this specific reason.

Yes. Hole in bottom of column shroud is specifically there for poking the release button without disassembling the whole column, etc.
