    Thank you so much for this video!!!!! My key would not come out of the cylinder in PARK after turning the engine off. The key turns fine but would not release out. A lot of other videos and online forums talk about the switch under the steering wheel but it did not solve the issue, this video however did 100% solved my issue!!! I took apart the center console and took out the part, cleaned it, lubed it, and re installed and it worked fine for like 2 months but it then started to act up again and would not let me take the key out so I bought a new one from Amazon the part name is "ACDelco GM Genuine Parts 88967140 Shift Interlock Solenoid" and took the console apart again and installed the new part and BANG works like new.

    I don't know yet if this will fix the problem on my trailblazer, but I want Cody the car guy to know, but he's the only one that explained what the problem was. The other handful of videos I watched before getting to this one, gave ways to work around it and not fix or describe the problem as to why it will not release the key everybody talks about this release button that's right up by the key on the column inside of the steering wheel column, one guy even takes an inch and a half hole saw, removes the plastic collar on the bottom half of the column, drills a hole in it and then puts it back on and says there you go that fixes your problem ... 🤔 well that may be true It eliminated the problem, but it didn't fix the issue. Thanks again for taking the time to make the video.

    Hey Cody, mine is doing that so I took the solenoid out, cleaned it, put it back in and it's still not releasing my keys. I noticed that there is a yellow thing in the middle of the shifter and it doesn't move up when I put it in park. Is there a way to bypass that so I can remove my keys?

    Mine just did this out of nowhere. Now when I put it in drive it acts like the linkage is off. If I put it in 3 same put it in 2 or 1 drives perfect. Shifter works as it should. Got under car linkage seems to be fine. Reverse is fine as well. I can put it in park and it won’t come out until I hit brake. Everything seems to be completely normal except what I just described to you. Any suggestions cause I have no idea why it would do this. Yes battery terminals are clean btw.

    What if it still will not release the key? I've seen videos saying shift cable,new ignition switch, drill a hole in cover under steering wheel to push a pin.

    • @CodytheCarGuy
      @CodytheCarGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The drilling the pin is when you're trying to remove a lock cylinder with no key but if your key is in there you can turn the key then push the pin. I have another video for stuck key in the ignition I would check first.

  • @evcorchado

    Does that issue also drains your battery? I've been having battery problems lately right before I had my key stuck..

    • @TheTwabster
      @TheTwabster 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anything electronic could develop a short, which may drain your battery prematurely. It may be something entirely separate from this circuit, but yes this shifter solenoid switch could possibly develop a short too.

  • @khud1111
    @khud1111 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I took apart my switch and didn't see any gunk. With the sensor clip plugged in and everything I was able to release my key. The problem I encountered was when I installed the sensor back on to the parking mechanism, it wouldn't release my key just like it used to. I don't think the arm is disengaging when I put it back into park after installing it, any advice?

    Hey, thanks for the video but im having an issue. I took out the piece, everything looked good inside, nothing stuck. But every time i try and put it back in, the lever is depressed all the time, so the key wont come out. Ive tried everything I can think of. It presses up against the shifter like its in gear all the time. Can you help?

    • @chrism4487
      @chrism4487 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess I should rephrase that, does that solenoid put pressure on that lever so that you have to pull on the shift to push it in? If so, then that is the bad part.

    • @CodytheCarGuy
      @CodytheCarGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do read my comments, and there are several videos I have for stuck keys in the ignition. And the gmc can have several reasons it gets stuck. This video has helped a lot of people and my other video has also helped a lot of people. I'd need more info to help point you in the right direction to fix yours.

    I just completed removal install - "shift interlock solenoid" - GM/AC DELCO #88967140
    [ fyi $87 USD Rock Auto | GM dealer quoted +$275 CDN]
    Problem to resolve : ignition key will not release
    Part condition : surface "guck" even on solenoid ( no interest in cracking it open to clean)
    Upon new part : no more problem - key slides out
    [ apparently this part replacement is the fix for locked shifter ]
    Take precaution : do not loose that torx screw holding the shifter to the shaft.
    GM will only sell the entire assembly.. even if you just lost the screw...
    [ guess what happened... the mystery where it fell.. finally appeared but a little sweat happened..... ]
    ---
    Reason no video on actual removal install of part is it takes "handy-work" in a cramped space
    to perform... and no video would be possible.
    Here is my council/description :
    [ start point being you have successfully removed the center console cover
    ( including unlatching that mysterious pink electrical connector) ]
    --
    The shifter was in the park position when performing this.
    Remove the 4-flange nuts that affix the gear shifter assembly (GSA) to the car .
    in order to easily view access/position the part ( you can set it upon its cage )
    and slight angle twist it ... etc
    - the white pin coming out of the part meets up against a surface (of shifter).
    - the solenoid (with the push-in) aluminum button faces out the right side [east] ( from drivers seat perspective ) of the GSA.
    - the part will come out the right side ( after detaching the connector that plugs into the part )
    You push the part out to right... + tilt it downward abit + twist it abit forward -- this is the "handy-work" -- it will come out
    remember how the connector cord was relative to the solenoid before you start.
    [ observe the whole position of the part and where the screws are before you commence ]
    just goto view the part itself ( at rock auto to get the shape lay-of-the-land ]
    The real challenge lies in those 2 torx mounting screws.
    They are accessible only from top-down view within the gear-shift guide opening..
    With the shifter in park.. the 1 screw-head appears ..say [NNE - 1pm] ( shifter being due north ) the other screwhead apx [ SSW -7pm ] as you peer down into shifter guide opening from high noon.
    - you will need about a 3-4 inch extension to reach the head of the Torx screws.
    - Ensure if using a Torx [T15] bit instead of a torx socket it is very secure and will not fall out when placing within the gearshift selector guides.
    from the left side (west-side) of the GSA you will see how the baseplate support for the part is molded as part of the GSA.
    The "7pm" torx screw outputs atop (overlays) a female receiver port. ( visually line them up perfectly so the screw (2mm diameter apx.) will drop right into it. I highly suggest you mask-tape the part into its resting position to prevent any slight movement once positioned ( from both sides of the GSA). I think there were a couple of nubs on the part that assist with fixing the position.
    and I applied a slight pressure of the part toward the shifter ( to feel it looseness or snugness ) and then "cage-taped" it from both sides to the GSA assembly. Then I came down into the shifter guide rails ( look from the left side of the GSA checking that 7pm screw lands right inside the female baseplate hole designed for it. Once that screw is in, you the other one is good to go in.
    Hope this helps you visualize and remedy
