This channel is so unique. He will start a project and boom, 10 new cars. But I love it so much. Who does E9 content in 2023? Legendary man right here.
Thanks for reviewing this E9, I grew up with it when I was between 5-10, and it was the first BMW I have "driven" -- shifting the gear from the passenger side while my dad told me to as he stepped on the clutch pedal, my mom always complain the clutch was too heavy. Lots of childhood memories on this car, look forward to hear more from you soon.
Completely agree on "most beautiful BMW ever" and to complete the podium I'll add the E38 and the 507. Josh, I've got the feeling this car will attract new viewers and I hope your channel blows up , all the best!
The red light does not have to mean that the alternator is bad, in my 73 E12 it also goes on when the battery is discharging when the engine isnt running. The light goes out when the battery is charging (engine running and the altenator doing its job), same can be seen in your video. The weird jumping from the gauges can be fixed by cleaning the contacts in the instrument cluster. The E9 is one of my favorite BMW's, good luck with it
These cars run fine on the Zenith Solexes. You can get rebuild kits online fairly cheaply. Tune the car .. . cap/rotor/points/wires/plugs fuel filter. pick up the chiltons/bentley for a bavaria (you may not be able to find an e9 book) and look online for the zenith INAT carb manual . its a Mercedes manual but has everything in it for rebuilding & tuning these carbs. you can use the weber unisyn to balance these, but you cant vacuum balance them ( they dont have the metered port). I and many others use a garden hose to balance those carbs by "ear" Btw the carbs have automatic electric chokes no button/knob necessary. Edit - almost forgot. Ironically. Now would be the time to give that car an Italian tune-up. Take it out on the highway and blow the gum and varnish out of it. Sometimes that's all you need for a carb'ed car
Thank you for this wealth of knowledge!!!! Italian tune up is definitely something id have on my mind, but I attempted to drive it a few times and it just stuttered really bad, couldn’t get above 4k rpms. Seemed fuel related, whatd be a good first step before actually digging into the carbs? Im afraid to start ripping them apart and it not being necessary
@@m3nameisjosh464 give it an ignition tuneup, then set the afm and idle and balance the carbs. Check the fuel press. Should be around 4.5 psi. Look for shit in the fuel tank, replace the fuel filter. If the gas is old it could have broken down. Run the bases. Fuel spark air. You will need to get a timing light, dwell meter, this is old stuff. Fight the urge to convert it to fi. Every car guy should experience the torture of carburation. But... If you do, save the original motor w/carbs. Sell it with the car. Those cars easily take an m30b35 and a g265. Very common swap.

welcome to the carby gang! I will be closely watching as my E12 double zeniths are also in dire need of a tune. And it will cost me at least a grand to get them adjusted by a shop. yikes. beautiful car though, glad to finally see it.
Gorgeous E9 dude, really love that colour, it just looks so classy. Loved the detailed walk around Josh, I can't wait for the 'drive' video and more on this super stylish E9. Seeing the red light and hearing you talk of a dodgy alternator dashed my hope of you starting her in this video, but hey you DID fire up the old girl and she sounded fabulously sweet, sweet sweet. Those lines, those tolerances, those shut gaps are just tremendous for a 70's machine, no wonder BMW were so successful.👍😎
Love how your garage/setup and collection has evolved over time! The E9 is stunning (also have no idea how to mess with carbs) but I'm sure you'll pick it up fast
Tuning carbs is pretty straightforward, but if they sat for a while things can get gummed up. I don't know if Italian fuel has ethanol in it, but ethanol can cause the diaphrams to harden and lose their pumping ability. It's best to use ethanol free gas if you can get it. If not, I've had good luck adding 4oz of Marvel Mystery Oil to 10 gallons of gas. This helps keep thing lubricated and avoid things like stuck needle valves.
Goood tip! Will do that! This car sat for months during imports, ive tried driving it hard and it really struggles at 4k plus, should I try cleaning them first?
Looks a clean car, interesting to see what you find ! FYI If is a 71 car the steering wheel would of been a 3 spoke with a shallow centre boss, the grill on the centre of the dash is for the speaker and I think the bonnet grills would be alloy silver, including the wing grills. 73-74 they went black with the wiper arms. I cant see the carbs being a problem as there are rebuild kits around. look forward to next instalment !

Fantastic E9 🔝 level jump canal. we want to see it in motion... but for such an elegant car we need updated clothing, like "The Italian Sitg" 👨💼... if the slippers and socks don't disappear we will cancel ourselves from the channel😅😅😅
Josh I’m loving all this bimmer content dude omgg, keep it coming. Btw quick question since you ran the m30 with stock ecu do you think an S5x/M5x can run itbs with stock ecu? Because they do sell a kit with adapter with s54 itbs
Bro I have a friend with the same exact car, same year color everything. And same carb problems. If you find someone with parts or whom works on them please let me know. Cool very cool cars

That’s how I drive my E28 sometimes, with my 9 year old son shifting the gears from the passenger seat. He loves it..😀
Thats really awesome to hear about the memories created through these cars!

Quick tip for carbs, make sure your ignition system is dialed in before tuning the carbs, otherwise you will keep chasing your tail.

Also the cigar lighter is incorrect...original is exactly like the window switch you mention on the other side with a silver top.

These carbs are actually complicated to get right. Ask any good carby shop. Most won't work on these zeniths.
