This 1972 BMW 3.0 CS Coupe Is A Stylish Member Of The Family

- Tom McComas Senior is a simple man with only a few indulgences: family, friends, and BMWs. Several months ago we profiled him and his son around a very special R60 motorcycle that has been passed down from when he bought it new to his son Tom Jr., Hollywood Stuntman, who rides it around the streets of Los Angeles to this day.
That BMW R60 would be the machine that would start a life long love affair with the marque, leading to an exceptional circumstance around his son's birth, and a CS available to buy in Joliet Illinois. “I ran into the dealership and said to the man, “Don’t sell that coupe! My wife is in labor and I’ll be back in the morning to buy it.” As he was running out the sympathetic manager of the dealership said to his salesman, “If you don’t sell it to that man, you’re fired.”
He returned shortly, bought the car, gave everyone in the dealership cigars, drove back to the hospital and picked his wife and newborn up "starting them off in style".

"Gave everyone in the room cigars." That's pure class right there. Where did that go? What a guy.
We become more and more subservient to debt and whatever the government tells us from surrender your face with masks to give up your joy for the climate, now we live in a fast gratification disposable age where kids don't wait at the window with mum to see the new car come home, they simply exepct there to always be the latest hybrid or EV in the drive. It's entirely within us to restore a polite, respectufl, boxy, raspy fun, classy car society but we have to fight the hardest fight of our lives, question everything we've been told to believe and fight people with tremendous power and wealth earned from our complacency.
@@rhedinrage1601 what kind of backwards world do you live in Jesus Christ 😂 surrender your face?? We are in a pandemic bro. As for the climate idk if you believe in it or not but its real and does mean if you want your great grand kids to have any enjoyment in life all cars will have to be electric, i love old cars but this is the planet we are talking about so just grow up. Kids waiting with mum at home😂 fucking hell its like you teleported here from the 60s
Where did it go? Well, smoking is bad for you, cigars in particular. And why do so many comments on TH-cam these days include “right there” when outlining an observation? Spectacular car though.
what a story haha!
@@jaffaorange3809 at one time smoking was more acceptable. It was what fathers did to celebrate their child being born. You didn't have to smoke them
i like how his house is 60% garage 40% house
That was just his garage
Yeah, and it was 300% my house.
Yeah I was thinking that,a true petrol heads home
Another home run Petrolicious. You did my father a solid.
Thanks for producing quality.
right on! this is why I love this channel.
Yup btw you got a cool dad Tom :)
Wish I could visit this garage. Unfortunately it's on another continent ...
Hi Tom. Your father is speaking my language. His statement about describing how the car drives, followed by "you just have to drive it to understand" is what I tell people too. Although not in the same league as your fathers car, I own a 2001 320ci, and I adore it. By far the best BMW I own.
You have the same name as your father??????
"and if you don't understand, well, have a nice life....."
love these videos
Yeah, I just love that line :) Cool guy.
I love this channel. No explosions, no races just people who love their beautiful cars.
Can not dislike a guy who loves cars and trains. Great video !
This car is probably one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.
this man is the definition of "cool"
Much love to this guy, his cars, bikes and trains. It's fun seeing the big car collections, but it's far easier to relate to this guy. ..and SO much kudos for keeping a car for that long, in such great condition!
his garage is great!
wow man this guy appreciated everything he bought, never sold. that is so awesome
Petrolicious, you make the best car candy there is. I’ve loved the E9 since I can remember. Two years ago, I finally bought one, a silver ’73 CSi with Alpinas. It’s been a dream. And it completely put me off new cars. My daily driver is now an E28 535is (also magical, and totally bulletproof). They really made amazing cars back then.
You are one lucky son of a gun to own not just a E9, but also a E28
The 3.0 CS Coupe nailed it. Something about the early 70's BMW's really captures the European essence of that era. I have never been a fan of muscle cars even as a kid I knew they were loud and vulgar. My first recollection of seeing a BMW was at the Devon Horse show in the early 70's. I could not have been more than 4 years old but I still I knew it was different, even much different than Mercedes and other European cars of the time. It was the 3.0 CS, and it was just waaaay more elegant than anything I had ever seen.. And while I have owned my share of BMW's and even now a porsche that is my favorite by far..
Well said.
"I have never been a fan of muscle cars even as a kid I knew they were loud and vulgar." Where I live they tend to be owned almost exclusively by loud and vulgar people too, most of which seem to carry a lot of aggression and the need to overcompensate for whatever it is they may be lacking. At any rate not the kind of people I'd like to be associated with. Some of them are approaching retirement age too but still have a penchant for rural rockabilly culture. It's quite bizarre.
"I knew it was different, even much different than Mercedes and other European cars of the time." I believe the Mercedes cars of that time were a bit too strict and designed with "engineer styling" for my taste. Too prim and proper.
Not a "muscle car" hater...
But the BMW definitely looks better than anything the US put out at that time. It's style is "unique" to the brand and "timeless", as most BMWs "sort of" looked like that until the mid 1990s, without looking out of place. They would today though, but that's more of a compliment than anything else.
One of the best designed BMW !!! what a treat !!!
When I first drove one in 1987 I instantly fell in love. Obe year later I bought my 3.0 csi in baikal blue. You simply dont need another car. Its a glider, its a racer, it can transport Your wife and children, its a beauty, its everything You need. It makes You smile everytime You see or drive or sit in it. Still one of the most underrated cars
3 Classic BMWs ? This guy is my hero!
First BMW I ever saw was when I was 14. It was an early 70’s BMW 2002. The 3.0 CS is a beautiful car and that color is absolutely gorgeous.❤️😊
"If you don't enjoy it, well have a nice life." - Lesson in life.
I absolutely share his opinion!
You could do another two episodes with this man looking at his garage. Such a beautiful one
Mr. McComas, this is a beautiful car. Thanks for sharing your story. Be well.
Wow! I had a similar situation in my life. My housemate had a 1974 BMW 3.0si sedan (not a Bavaria, btw. same body style but Euro spec). Anyways, he asked me to move it one day. I had never driven a BMW before and didn't understand what the fuss was all about...until I got behind the wheel. I ended up buying it from him and drove it for a couple of years. It had a 3 litre straight six with Bosch d-jetronic fuel injection, leather seats, power sunroof, polaris silver, etc and some rust. I know exactly where this guy's coming from. That car left a big impression on me for life. Since then I owned a couple of 2002's (one of them was a '73 tii)...Sweet cars some of those 70's BMW's!
The story about pulling into the dealership was great! Reminds me of my Grandpap and some of his crazy antics that he always talks about.
Beautiful Story and even more Wonderful Owner of this Timeless Classic. I watched this shortly after it was posted and again just Now.. It holds up well. I certainly hope it is still being treated well and driven frequently. Thanks, Petrolicious for these great stories of “Man” and their Machines..
Perfect garage!
I strive to achieve the same! Perfection!
I absolutely love the 72 3.0 CS, great to see one featured. Especially one so beautiful, loved, and pure.
Absolutely loved this. What a man. A great purveyor of taste.
Cool story about how he bought the car, I liked it a lot. That car is awesome, it has something that attracts me to.
In the mid 80's my father bought an onroad version 3CSL as they were pretty cheap back then. I became his favourite car and I loved it. It was white with the black stripe and I think it had the Alpina wheels. Wish I could afford one now.
these videos just keep getting better and better, thank you
BMW from the heart, I bought my first 318 when i was 14, I'm 28 now and drive a pretty modified E36.
bitch
Love the trolls of YT
Something special about them.
Basically, just about my favorite car ever. Discovered them when I was a kid in the early 70s, when my aunt had a Bavaria. Been in lust ever since.
You, sir, have a righteous trifecta of cars. Well done, mate.
Gorgeous video, reminds me of my grandfather going on about the fun he had street racing back in the 60's until he mistook a Porsche for a Beetle one night..
Such a cool guy, and I love that he's had it for so long.
Finally! E9 is my favourite oldtimer, my dream car.
Timeless design. This man is living the dream. I am partial to the m6 myself but the 3.0 is a beauty
What a truly beautiful car. A piece of automotive art.
My dad had one of those around 1995 with an E28 M5 engine. I think this was the car that got me into BMWs, I was only six years old.
I always told my family and friends what i want in life. A bungalow with a separate 3 car garage with a E24,a E30 vert and a 3.0CS. This man is living my exact dream! Had a e24 sold it now have a E30 convertible. Need to push to get everything at once! Oh man I am sooo excited beyond belief.
a wise man once told me...everyone is unique....this Gentleman is a perfect example...God Bless
People n love with their things, be it a car, a motorcycle, train or whatever, being able to put into words the "why" - alway makes my heart melt ! Seeing this old chap riding his beautiful Coupé and the seemingly never-ending smile on his face makes me very, very happy !
What a classy dude, a real idol
i grew up with bmws and i there is nothing like one. You have to experience one to appreciate it.
the latest ones are brilliant cars but i do prefer a good e46
They just don't feel the same after E46, E39 and E38, however they are still great cars.
the E60 M5 is the last great bmw ever made..anything else after that was just shite.
So true, but i feel like they have lost some of the character that the cars from the mid 90's and back had.
The kids of this classy gentlemen are so lucky, they got such a great enthusiast! 👍
Gorgeous. One of the best all-around cars ever.
I love your garage! I've had a 1999 m3 for 5 years and I can't give it up, ever. Very impressive that you got to keep your car for 41 years. I've lusted over the coupe and the e24 m6!
Damm that´s some dedication right there. I wish I could have a beer or two with this man and talk about cars and life.
I never had BMW in my life, but I would love to smoke a cigar with this Gentelman!
Great film as always... and also, huge respect to the owner for holding on tho the car for so long and keeping it in this condition.
That E24 M6 (M635CSi in Europe) is my favourite, even though I love the E9 3.0CS! Fantastic video!
3.0CSL vs M635CSi would be a more difficult decision ! :P
RuiAlvez petrolicious has to make a video on the e24, it's my favorite as well which i why i'm now a proud owner of one
This man is the definition of having Class.
Best looking car ever...
These videos are so well made. I enjoy them all.
Love this guy... a connoisseur!
Really good story and an absolutely beautiful car
I just passed my driving test today! I will be start my motoring life tomorrow morning in my 1993 Peugeot 205.
Congratulations! and welcome to the club ;) 205s are great fun little cars
Great! How is everything today..? I just did the same two days ago. I‘m starting my journeys with a 1999 Volvo V70..!
@@AndorRadnai Better off throwing that license off a bridge......
Michael Meliambro We’ll talk again when you have a car crash like the one we had. You wouldn’t have the opportunity to roast me if I had been in any other car. Oh, and bold of you to assume that I don’t want to learn to drive like Walter Röhrl…
@@AndorRadnai I already HAD a car crash two goddamn years ago, u dumb f*ck!!!!
"Don't sell that coupe, my wife is having a baby I'll be back in the morning". Lol. Awesome guy.
My god, such a beautiful video. As a BMW fan, this was just glorious. He has 2 of my top 3 favorite BMWs of all time. God, that right there is the dream
Best vid in a long time. I´m no BMW fan, but the 3.0 CS/CSI is a great looking car. Just beautiful :)
Awesome story!!!! I know I love my 89 325is, and I've always loved the 3.0. Plus he has a first gen M6, what incredible taste in cars.
Another great video. Tom you seem like a great guy - thanks for sharing!!
Great story behind it, I think I'd agree with it being one of the top 25 best looking cars ever made.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful automobile, Sir!
Great car! cool guy! I could spend days with this guy playing with his trains!
Tom, is cool as hell. I love the old 3 Series. Wish I still had mine.
Such passion, much respect for this man.
I know how you feel, I had one in Germany, Red. Most beautiful car that I have ever seen and owned. The ride is like riding on a cloud. Straight 6, Double Overhead Cam. But the machine would rust really bad. If you plan on buying one, check inside the glove compartment, if you see rust, have money because it going to be very expensive to repair. The body is one piece so if you have an accident fender for example then you can buy the fender but it would need to be welded on the car, filed and painted, very expensive. The macpherson shock absorber hardware cups that holds the shocks in place tends to rust badly as well. in spite of the expensive, I still loved that Car.
I had a 1973 BMW Bavaria with the same 3.0 engine and hearing that engine sound, I kind of miss that car. Rust got to mine big time and I had to let it go. Hope that engine and transmission found a home as it out lived the body of that car. The coupes have always fetched a pretty penny, however if one wants the driving feel, any of the big six sedans from that era (2500, 2800, 3.0s and Bavaria) will give you a very similar experience for a fraction of the price. While they are not quite as sexy as the coupes, they are still an attractive sedan and a blast to drive.
Such a beautiful collection he has ... All my favorites
Beautiful, just beautiful.
And if you don't understand, well... have a nice live!! Those epic words, like the end of a movie!
Not a BMW fan but always had a soft spot for the E9. A very beautiful car.
Great man! It couldnt be any other way looking at his garage!
He said something like, "You've gotta drive it to understand," and he's right. Slip behind the wheel, and even before you start the engine, you know this car was designed by drivers, for drivers. Everything is where it should be, ergonomically. The shifts are crisp. The road feel is as precise as the handling. It's a wonderful car.
I love his passion, what a great MAN!
over all amazing .great guy, "get in and drive it" try it out or you will never know, words to live by
This gentleman has impecible taste, so pure and refined those cars deserve it. He's got all my dream cars basically. 325i (maybe M3), E24 M6, E9 3.0 CS. Top of my hat to you, sir.
I now really know who I wanted to be when I grow up.
This is the video i've been waiting for, thanks Petrolicious! The nice little bonus shot of the E24 was appreciated! :)
this is my absolute dreamcar!
This man is my BMW doppelgänger! he has 3/4 of my all time favorite BMWs, just a 507 roadster and he would complete the set. Unfortunately I am only 1/4(325 cab) and a lottery win away from completing the set myself.😁
Great video, thanks.
That shot at 1:01 is amazing.
Yeah, the garage of my dreams! I love it!
Great presentation by a very passionate, very articulate gentleman. Semper Fi! :)
Great video! He looks like such a cool guy!
I hope we see more of that M635 e24 m6 in the future.
"and if you don't understand then have a nice life" Brilliant!
Outstanding video!
Awesome video! I've always loved the BMW cars of this vintage.
Another beautiful documentary ! Bravo Petrolicious !
Great video. I like this guy - into BMW cars & motorcycles just like me. You do absolutely have to drive them to know what they're about and if you don't immediately get the feeling from it you probably never will (first time I drove a 3 series I knew in less than a minute).
Beautiful story...beautiful car...Thank you.
Absolutely phenomenal film as usual, very inspiring!
I want to grow up and be just like this guy. Perfect level of cranky and charming.
When I'm old I wish to have his lifestyle!
awesome garage and car wish bmw could style like they used to
Great car and great video as always! You guys really know how to make us all feel good by watching at your videos. Nevertheless please make more Alfa Romeo videos! Pleaseeee! I really started to love Alfa even more by watching the videos on your channel! Thanks and greetings from Switzerland! Thumbs up...
Absolutely gorgeous
I am so in love with this channel
This car is so fricking gorgeous
