I've done walkways with stone and patios,we dug out soil,put in crushed stone layer,then used a compactor,leveled stones compacted,then placed stones leveling with sand,then sand swept into cracks,we also had a plastic edge nailed at the edges to keep stones in place,and keeps stones in a straight edge.I just made a path with stones on the edges,and soil on the path,raked level,and straight,no level just eyeballs it,did work alone

Nice video. The sand or aggregate composite packed under the stones, would make the stones stable and prevent "rocking" when you step on a stone and weeds in between stones which are a real pain to maintain later on-also prevents stones from 'shifting' over the winter. Brush sand or aggregate over the walkway grooves and then spray. Show your finished work dried and then a year later...just link those photos. Very nice placement of stones in a pattern-that is an art in itself!

My wife and I like the idea of natural landscaping but I live with 400 or so acre of woods around me so all I do is fight back nature. Haha. I actually found this video while searching for tips on pouring a small concrete pad for my trash cans. It pulled me in so I wanted to say great job and you're inspiring for us do-it-yourselfers.
You were so lucky to find this stone on your property it would have cost a fortune to buy. The sand underneath is to help level your rock. You did a great job!
Great video and great idea to use native stones in your yard to build a nice stone path. You get to kill to birds with one stone, er, a hundred stones! But I would think that even if with a stone walkway you're not expecting it to be very level as apposed to a brick walkway, sand would still be helpful in settling the stones and preventing too much shifting. Either way it looks awesome. Great job.
WOW! Im sure it was back breaking...but in the end..look what you created!!! Its a beautiful natural garden path! No need for mortar or sand..I think it would take away the natual beauty. SAd that we didnt really see the finished project..it cut off after you hosed it down..would love to have seen the whole path in its finished state.

Florence, do not use this video if you live anywhere that may freeze (Or anywhere for that matter). The soil will gather water throughout the summer, the stones will not stay in place, and in the winter they will lift from the ground freezing underneath them. You must use compacted limestone or another setting stone in order to prevent the surface stones from moving. A lot of work to enjoy it for 6 months, much better to do it properly the first time.
nice job. I wish I could get something started on my own in my 3/4 acre lot with different levels in Santa cruz. Landscaping costs are very steep and it is like squeezing water out of stone to get something nice for the money.
Honest question here. Don't you have to have a compacted base with sand and gravel so the flagstone won't just sink again? I'm asking because we've dug up TONS of flagstone out of our yard that was put in from the previous owner. We're recycling it into a backyard pathway.
nice looking walkway but I think you should have filled in the cracks with dry quickcrete then swept and then watered it so it would set. I think the dirt fill will just keep washing out when it gets wet. just my thoughts for what they are worth (not much) :)
I'm looking at this kind of videos because I'm gonna do the exact same thing and I also don't know how but one thing that I want to make sure of is that grass and weeds don't grow in between the stones so I guess I'm going to have to put some landscaping may and use sand in between the rocks right? Please comment on how to do this right. Thank you
to be fair, with heavy rain, I would ask how stable the black dirt is between the stones. My experience is you need to add a bit of mortar and water to bind the dirt/sand between the stones. Then, a sudden heavy downpour will not affect it. Also, the dirt base might also might not be stable in heavy rain. Depends where you live I guess . Good effort though. Should never knock anyone for trying. Thanks for the video.
Watching this video, it seems that laying down stone walkway is an easy job. But actually it requires skills and a creative mind to do the job perfectly.
Dude I seriously doubt this was your first time you totally nailed it for a first timer! I'm in the process of doing mines but haven't pulled the dirt just yet because I was starting to believe that I was wasting too much time and hoping I wasn't missing steps but I completely understand now! I really can't wait to dig out the dirt! I think it looks awesome! However I was told people would need grass/weed blocker tarp covered in sand to keep the huge stones leveled and stable. I see others mentioned that you missed a huge step that could cause the stones to go unleveled.
I am wondering how long this last because I would think sooner or later it would start to sink in the ground with nothing under it but dirt. I was looking to see how you prep it to stop this from happening.
The dirt will compact into seams. Normally, there is no give to the rock but if you have drainage issues you can have a little washout of the aggregate material (sand, gravel, etc.), in those cases you would want to maintenance it yearly or after a heavy rain event. Simply walk each stone and if you feel movement fill in sides with some additional material of your choice. This would e less than a cup or two. I keep a bag of sand and decomposed granite on hand for this purpose.

This is How NOT to lay a flagstone walkway. You need a strong foundation and mortar in between stones. In 3 months this walkway was all jacked up. Ive been a Mason for 30 years and this is horrible

I think you did a nice job, they are laid nice and flat. No issues to run a line trimmer to cut the grass as it grows between the cracks.

you had to dig those stones out of your lawn because the last guy who lived in your house, also built a stone walkway without a weed barrier.

Hard work but it looks great! I used a type of commercial sand that hardens like cement because I didn't want any grass or weeds between my stones.

You should have used 1/4 or 3/8 inch pea gravel a a base, compacts real good.

Spray salt water on it occasionally, that will prevent grass from growing in the cracks
1/2 CUP OF SALT TO A GALLON OF WATER, Will KILL THE WEDS & GRASS, I NEVER BUY WEED KILLER.....!
by now they are doubtless finding out what caused the rocks to be buried the first time...nice neighbor, small wonder he's no longer a contractor...

Also - you don't need all that fancy base since the soil beneath is already compacted & the stones are large/flat which will keep them up & stable
looks good but I always put 4 to 6 ply plastic under rocks to keep out weeds and grass
