HOW TO LAY A FLAGSTONE PATIO: Using Gator Base Instead of Gravel

  • Single mom, Rebekah Higgs shows how easy it is to use flagstone to create the perfect out door space. Her daughter who is 2.5 years old at the time (Lennon) gets in on the fun. Flagstone is heavy and levelling out the ground can take a lot of muscle, so Chris Little A local Halifax Landscaper from Neat Lawn Care is here to help with any issues that might arise and with rocky soil like we have in Nova Scotia, issues do come up!
In this video you will learn the proper steps to laying a flagstone patio that will last a life time, using natural stone that is easy to lift and lay even for those who are not used to hard, heavy physical labour.
We saved hours of heavy lifting by using Gator Base instead of Gravel as a base for our Flag stones.
Thank you to our sponsors, The Stone Depot, Stebran Resources and Neat Lawn Care for making this project possible!

Very nice DIY video. With sweat equity the whole family can contribute and be a part of. I've switched tactics from a 12x10 deck to going with flagstone. Its easier - and with the price of lumber, its economical and will pretty much last forever. Thanks again DIY Mom.

Your not Supposed to use that that’s for interlocking you need to put mortar in those joints. That’s not how you do flagstone at all.

You are totally wrong. Polymeric sand (flex dust) is more than ok if you use the right kind. They make it to where i still bongs and hardens in up to 6” gaps. I am a landscape/ hardscaper and we use it. As do a lot of other guys I know in the industry

Very good tutorial. I tried to lay flagstone (without concrete) on my small front lawn. Turned out terrible. I am planning to try this method. Instead of using the crusher dust, could I use sand? What is the gator base for? Is there something else you can use to bring the cost down? How many bags of flex lock did you use?
