  • {Garden Marking} Episode#4 Building a Flagstone Garden Path
    {旮旯造園記} 第4集 後院花園 園路篇
    When I was young, I always dreamed of a garden full of plants.
    However, a pathway in between is nonetheless necessary.
    A pathway enables us multiple perspectives to enjoy the garden,

    not to mention for the ease of future maintenance.
    Today we will share with you our main garden path.
    小時候,總幻想花園裡爬滿了植物。
    雖然如此,蜿蜒的園路卻是不可缺少的骨架。
    園路讓我們可以有多樣的觀賞和近距離體驗,當然還方便日後管理。
    這次來分享一下我們的花園主路建設以及食材花園近況吧!

    I love your content and style of filmmaking. The weed barrier can be controversial among gardeners. But the fact is, in this application it serves two purposes. Weed suppression and more importantly it provides separation between the different materials, especially the small chip granite. This helps stop the migration of one material into the other. I like the final look!

    • @galastudio9
      @galastudio9  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the comments! Now looking back, we really would have installed 2 layers of weed barrier there, tons of calendura are currently growing out of gravel at the moment 😅

    Not to be negative, but when you already spend $, you should do it right with the base preparation. You should have added at least 4-inch gravel first and compacted for proper drainage. Then add finer DG gravel, then screed with the proper 1/8 leveling grade to avoid puddling. Then you add your stones on top and use whatever is between the rocks. As you can see at @7:28, when you walk on those stones, they are moving/ breathing underneath, and they will shift and perhaps break over time. Also, those gravels on top will fly arround when you clean/ blow your leaves. It looks nice, and I like the look of them, but they are pain to maintain. There is a product called "ekoflo", it's expensive but it permanently keeps those small rocks from flying arround.

      Really appreciate your constructive input sir. We did a patio with ceramic paver later on, which used the exact construction detail you mentioned here, it works well for a project that is close to house or paver has low tolerance during installation. For this project per se, first of all since it is a natural setting and our flagstone are pretty thick(1.25"+) it wouldn't be too much of a issue directly laid ontop of the grade, there was a little bit of flex in the begining, but after foot traffic for a month and the mositured california winter(when soil is softer) they set firmly into the existing soil now. drainage wasn't too much of a concern, since the flagstone are "floating" in our garden bed and our (soil percolates pretty well). Since we did the project on our own, we also wanted the construction to be less labor intensive. We heard of ekoflo , and you are totally right about their cost...for us we had a pretty streamlined workflow to clean the leaves now, we have a leaf blower, and there is sweet spot in the power setting where you can lift up the dead leaves but not the gravels, we would usually then simple blow all the additional leaves into the flower bed as mulchs.

    I am very excited about your next video. I have a small balcony garden. I have edible plants in my garden. I need some new plants can you recommend me some plants? Gardening is one of favourite thing. Your videos are always inspiring.

      Thank you! But to your point, you probably have to provide me with more detailed info in order for me to make a suggestion, like your climate, orientation, available sun hours, how much maintenance you can provide etc

    • @peachcatdheegi9071
      @peachcatdheegi9071 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@galastudio9 It's rainy season right now. The weather is kind of hot and windy too. The orientation of my garden is north-south orientation . Available sun is about 9 hours. I can provide as much maintenance as it takes.

    • @galastudio9
      @galastudio9  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@peachcatdheegi9071 9 hours is a lot of sunlight! You have many choices! Per you condition i feel like succulents are a great option to try out. They love sunny hot climate, easy to maintain, and are compact to fit in a balcony garden. If you like flower, rose might work as well, they have many varieties! Some cascading varieties can even hang from your balcony, creating a stunning view!
      I highly recommend you visiting the local nursery to see what they offer, because they will usually provide the most suitable plants to grow in your area. Plants have they growing zone (mine is hardiness zone 9b). 😉

    • @galastudio9
      @galastudio9  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, we are all working full time, it actually will take quite a bit time especially during the construction phase,we will spend an hour or two during workday, more hours in weekends for the more laborious task.
