    Very good work. I did stonework for 45 years and you're doing it right. You might try cutting an eighth inch line on the stone and then use a 2 inch serrated chisel to break it off. Remove the saw line with a sharp three quarter inch chisel. It's labor intensive but the results speak for themselves.

    I had to watch this A LOT, because Stefan is really easy on the eyes. I think if he were in my yard, who would care if there was a walkway! This is a handy video as well.

    This was such a good video but the only thing that's a bummer is that I'm realizing just how much work this is going to be for me! :( I knew it would be, but ugh. Just can't afford to hire someone right now. I wish I could just drive over there and watch you do this in action. I feel like seeing it in person would be the difference between my thinking about doing it and my actually doing it! Thank you!

    I always use a 4-6 ply plastic underneath to avoid weeds......Nice video

  • @sgrunkem
    @sgrunkem  11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You can find 1/4 minus gravel at about half of the gravel yards out there. 3/8" minus is the same thing as 1/4" minus.

  • @sgrunkem
    @sgrunkem  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can use a polymer sand to spread into the joints. It will harden and deter weed growth. With that said; weeds will bust through concrete to reach daylight if they need to, so keeping a spray jug of Round Up around is effective for mainteneance as well.

    • @denisepfahl3147
      @denisepfahl3147 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to go natural, a solution of vinegar, salt and water sprayed into joints kills them dead. Roundup is linked to cancer, be careful using it.

    It has the 'fines' in it. This makes it compact-able and therefore structural, unlike 'clean' or 'washed' gravel..

    No DG on top of the gravel? Isn't 2" shallow?

    • @sgrunkem
      @sgrunkem  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4" on patio, 2" is fine for walkway. DG would be redundant on top of 1/4 minus gravel.

  • @user-pg5vf4yr7e

    no filter fabric etc.. on top of leveled soil where you dug for path before laying stones down?

    • @sgrunkem
      @sgrunkem  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +you tube
      Fabric is not necessary. Some people use it, because it adds stability, and prevents weeds. This little walkway is plenty stable, and the weeds that typically grow in gravel germinate from the top where the fabric does not protect. If you like fabric, though, Go for it!

    Can you ever just set thick flagstones, say 4" thick, directly without the base? Our soil is heavy clay or sand plus clay and I'm wondering if I could get my grade, tamp it, put an inch of sand over it, and set the flagstones since what we have is 4" thick and there's zero chance of them ever breaking.

    • @sgrunkem
      @sgrunkem  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      you should be good. at least use sand for leveling, though

    • @ef2b
      @ef2b 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Stefan Grunkemeier Thanks for the reply. Turns out, I built it yesterday and did set it on sand for leveling as you described. Even though it's on sand, I'm going to point with 1:2 cement:sand in the gaps rather than fill will sand or gravel. This is a narrow side yard where there's no room to grade out 10 feet, so I pitched the stone to carry stormwater to the back yard. I need to point the gaps so that water will flow over the walk rather than sinking between the stones. It may crack, but I'm hoping the 4" thickness will help. I'll know in a year or three. Thanks for your help! Yell if you think pointing is a total disaster. Moving stormwater is more important than looks.
