This film is excellent from beginning to end.. The script is intelligent & shows that policemen actually can be human too. The cast is excellent. Ian Hendry & Ronald Frasier play off each other well as the principal detectives assigned to the murder investigation of a model. Jeremy Brett as the model's lover is 1st rate. Peter Arne who portrays Brett's artist brother is perfectly loathsome as is James Villiers as a beloved TV actor who was blackmailing the murder victim. Jane Asher, one time Paul McCartney flame, does well as Hendry' s daughter. Michael Truman who directed severel Secret Agent Man, Danger Man, & Saint episodes methodically builds the mystery to it's climax. Each scene leaves the viewer wanting to know more about each character & what drives them. Give this film a chance & it will surprise you.👍
It shows how British police can sometimes be human. It does not apply to American cops. Here unarmed British police capture an active shooter, quite different than the heavily armed police cowards at Ulvalde who stood by for 77 minutes to serve and protect themselves while their prey was shooting school children. Then it took a border patrol officer to break in and kill him.

Old British films are awesome!..."Turn the Key Softly" is another great one from the era... Yvonne Mitchell...They don't make ladies like that anymore...Great film!
A fabulous Whodunnit, which rattles relentlessly along for 90 riveting minutes. Ian Hendry is mesmerisingly superb as Chief Inspector Birkett - there was always a stillness & vulnerability to his performances - with a great foil in his dry-humoured sidekick sergeant, Ronald Fraser. There are plenty of twists & turns - especially at the very end - some great scenes on The Thames (linking to Ian's real-life love of boats), and topnotch turns from a distinguished cast; including a young Jeremy Brett and an even younger Jane Asher. Music plays an important part in the film; interwoven throughout, either as incidental or central to the action. There's a very poignant scene where Birkett soaks up his love of Madame Lavelle's operatic singing, only to discover she's a 'wrong 'un'. Rosalie Crutchley heightens the poignancy here, with her devoted sincerity to her 'fallen' employer. The lighting used on some of the interior shots is wonderful as well. Overall, it's a top-rate production. But it's Ian Hendry who steals the show. A hugely talented, fabulously vesatile, actor, he draws you in with a commanding performance. His eyes alone are incredibly expressive. I think he was easily the best British actor of that era bar none. My only gripe with Girl In The Headlines is some brief, yet jarringly disturbing, dialogue which strays into 'bad' girls deserve their comeuppance territory.
Great performances, the twists and turns were great and the chapters interesting. I liked the way the mystery unfolded. The drug smuggling shenanigans were elaborate, I wonder where they got that? Really enjoyable!
