Great video! The way I teach reading of rhythmic notation is (after explaining the note lengths) is: learn and memorize groups of notes (and rests for that matter) exactly like words. It's hard to read rhythm were notes and rests are mixed, but with time one recognizes the shapes.
The alternative (European?) note names are 4 Beats is Whole Note = Semibreve 2 Beats is Half Note = Minim 1 Beat is Quarter Note = Crotchet 0.5 Beat is Eighth Note = Quaver 0.25 Beat is Sixteenth Note = Semiquaver For example To play semiquavers, you need to play 4 notes to each beat.
