I took Grab last week. This exact BYD model came to pick me up. I’m so impressed by the space, quietness and smoothness of this vehicle. Driver told me he bought for 170k as well. I’m lucky!

I went China few times this year for work and most of the time took BYD cars for cab. Some top end models also. There is no doubt the quality is superb, and all the drivers told me they save money driving it. Only prob for us in Sg is that there arent enough charging facilities here vs in China.

I own an ATTO 3 for one month already. Charging is not an issue. Only need the app of the charging agency. Plug in the charger head, scan the QR code and activate the app and the car is already charging. If the charging point is your carpark, it is even more convenient than to drive to petrol koisk. There are also many charging agents out there. There are charging stations in Safra club too.
So it is just s little personal discipline, and planning on our driving trips would do.
Agreeing with Josh, the running cost is low. My tracking shows that it is around $0.10 per km for ATTO3. About the same as a smaller size hybrid car.
When i drive around, i dont foul the air for other road users.
When i stop my car next to a house or a ground floor HDB flat while waiting for a friend, i dont rob them off their clean air.
(In some HDB estate i can see notices “please turn off your engine!” put up by the residents)
Another advantage is that if i park my car and have a rest in it with air con on, i have no worries of carbon monoxide poisoning, only need to ensure that the kWh is sufficient before the next charging.

How long for it to be fully charge? I like the way u calculate saving on maintenance and fuel. If we add time take to charge vs time to pump petrol, how much different or real saving on that too. Thanks sharing wonderful content with us.

If you use Tesla supercharger its very fast. It took 15mins from 12% to 80%. Even if you use SP Services DC100 charger it will only take u about an hr to fully charged it. Tesla supercharger is the cheapest and the fastest. All the chargers are very quiet during charging phase, the Tesla supercharger make loud furious noise during initial charge to let you know its working furiously hard to electrify your car. On the fuel saving part, its about 25% of your current petrol expenses. I was previously paying $600+ a mth on petrol.(abt $2.7 per litre now) for the past 18 days since i changed to Tesla, my electrical bill is $93.90. On a full mth, i estimate i should be paying $150 for charging.

If you comparing Atto 3 to cars like Mazada 3 or Altis, the road tax no longer makes sense. My altis about 8 years old cost $742 while Atto 3 will cost $1.5k per year. Coupled with increase insurance cost... the savings on patrol means nothing

    • @joshconsultancy

For road tax and insurance difference, averaged out per month will be $150/m more maybe but valid point raised.

Hi, the BYD may have very low ARF at the end of COE cycle. I considered Polestar2 prior to getting a Tesla Model Y. Polestar2 scrap value is only $1.5k whereas Tesla has a $27k scrap value.
Tesla strong point is the software. It beats even it’s german competitors, but it will lose out on cabin refinement. I think in terms of resale value, the Tesla is going to remain stronger than the rest.

@@BillaJas You wont care about ARF now. But when you are selling or scrapping the car in future, a low parf return can set you back further and depreciation value higher than most cars with higher ARF. Its like buying $300k insurance coverage, at the end of 10 year cycle insurance company A return you $1.5k, while another return you $27k.

I didn't realise owning a car in Singapore was that expensive. I thought it was something like 50 or 60% more than "normal" places. From what you are saying we can get the same car (Not sure if the model is exactly the same) in Australia for less than 25% of what you pay in Singapore. Its around $50K AUD in Australia (approximately $44K SGD).

By the way, do u happen to know what is BYD’s battery warranty for this model, cos battery is probably the most expensive down-the-road cost. Thanks.

      Just for sharing:
some Caltex kiosks have DC charging DC50kW. Pretty fast, 1 hr 20 min from 40% to 100% just about the time i do grocery or eat a meal nearby. Some country clubs also have SP chargers both AC and DC. If you are a Safra member, there are charge-eco DC50kW chargers with member discount, lower charging price than SP. You get about $0.096 per km range even after paying for Safra car-parking. Better energy cost than hybrid petrol cars. Can go there for a swim, for gym, badminton, etc, and your EV car is charged.
Now, i park my car next to other people’s houses with air con on while resting or waiting in the car, the residents wouldn’t frown on me as my car does not spew out exhaust gas nor make any annoying sound. And there is absolutely no concern about carbon monoxide inside the car.

But did read about the risk of fire as the battery pack can be vulnerable to that especially in a collision or I even saw reports that EV catches fire even when stationary. Perhaps should let the battery technology matures further…….
