Fixing Matt's failed M4 turbos with our new Evolve OEM+ S55 Turbos - No more oil usage

  • One of the common problems we are starting to see as the twin turbo S55 found in the F8x M2C/M3/M4 gets a little older is the turbos starting to fail. Matt's high mileage car was no different with his car using 1 Litre of oil every 1000-1500 miles.
    To cure this we fit a set of our newly developed OEM+ Turbos. These are a direct replacement for the original turbos but feature uprated seals and bearings meaning they won't fail again in the future.
    In this video we show the entire process from removing the original turbos, stripping them down to rebuild as our uprated OEM+ turbos, then how we install them back in to the car.

    Have you guys encountered a knocking coming from the steering rack going over bumps at low speed? The standard f30 platform had a repair done by bmw but I can’t find one for the f8x. The forums suggest tightening the follower by an eight of a turn but people report this makes the steering wheel tight.

      Had a similar knocking noise, was rectified by replacing the drop links.

    Cheers Imram as ever. With there being so many opportunities, or chances of upgrading, re-engineering BMW's failings or bugs. What would be your main focus on a next step or focus? The sub-frames, from an amateurs stance, as of mine, seem quite flimsy or wanting of a re-design?!

    This is all good stuff; but you really haven’t provided any color as to what you’ve actually done to resolve the failing OE turbo seals and associated thrust bear failures; other than to say “the turbo has been upgraded to OEM Plus”. More transparency in this regard would likely draw in more takers; especially if the compressor and turbine are essentially OEM or OEM-like save for the logo.

    Hello i have a question about another common failure on the s55 - the coolant tank from top mount charge cooler gets emptied after a day or 2 after being filled. There is no leaks. Does that mean the charge cooler needs replacement? If so, would it be better to go aftermarket or will a low mileage used one suffice?

      Yes sounds like your charge cooler has failed which is becoming more common.
      A good condition used OEM one would be most cost effective but unfortunately hard to say if it won’t fail the same way.

    How many miles was he getting to know he needed it doing ?how many miles a litre do you guys say they need changed?

      Realistically an S55 functioning properly shouldn’t need topping up between services (hard driving/track use will probably change this) - But if you’re using a litre in anything less than 3000 miles I’d start to be investigating why.

      Around 130k, but we do start seeing these fail as early as half of that depending on how the car is used/maintained.

      Do you mean the oil filter housing? Matt has one of our Evolve Billet filter housings fitted.

      Would it be worth relocating it, using a relocation kit. Just out of the way of the charger cooler To make way for a proper juicier charge cooler. lol.

      @@sohailahmed127that’s gonna be pretty difficult to relocate. Search up N55/S55 OFHG replacement and you’ll see how it’s assembled. Both oil and coolant flow through that housing
