ZL's with A10 get hot at the track. Forum's say that the biggest culprit is actual the engine oil getting to 300F. The engine, trans, differential share the engine coolant, so, if the engine gets super hot, it's heating your coolant, which is reducing its capacity to chill the ATF, in turn. Add an auxiliary engine oil cooler. Similarly, don't turn on the heat in the cabin, because, you'll just be adding more heat to the coolant thru the heater core, instead turn on the A/C to try to chill the coolant passing thru the cabin. Some argue that over fill ATF is causing issues, however, don't bleed the ATF when it's hot or it'll risk being too low on ATF.
6,500 RPM -> 5,500 RPM , only drops 1000 RPM after an upshift and it has to keep doing those shifts pretty much all the time at high RPM. It held up pretty well regardless. Including the engine which is a more traditional V8 that doesn't like (or need) high RPM, constantly near redline because of short gearing. And owner commented it was due to poor transmission maintenance/service from a shop, so considering that, held up quite well.
Im surprised the PCM let it keep going well past the point of flaring on shifts. It should go into limp mode wayyy before it gets that hot. Those clutches probably lost at least half their normal lifespan (if not all of it) in just a lap. Definitely a failure of the cars powertrain protections.
Good catch. At the start it shifts 6500, typical, LT/LS shift point for the 6.2s. Later around 9 mins it starts flashing to 7k+ until the shift denied issues.

If you are getting a shift denied warning, that's usually from the transmission getting too hot. These don't do good at excessive prolonged speed. The transmission is the wekness for this car. The trans cooler is too small. You shoukd reqch out to Ben Hardy who had one of these and experienced this issue with it. Same thing for the Mustang GT500, except not as bad.

Use a heat wrap on the exhaust as it passes near the transmission and differential. Any sort of heat wrap you can use really, and the entire length of the exhaust if you can. Also, perhaps fit a heat shield between the exhaust and transmission. Ditto for the exhaust and differential.
wraps are dumb as they can cause condensation, rusting etc. heat shields are used by OEMs for this reason. You never see OEM wraps. Ceramic coating also helps inside.
@@N4CR Well I don't necessarily disagree with you on the tape wraps, but if it was my only option towards saving a 10-speed automatic transmission worth thousands of dollars I would take it. There are other style wraps that are metal based and adhere to the exhaust. Not sure where they placed the heat shields from the factory on this car but I'll bet there is none shielding the transmission from the exhaust. The definition of ceramic coating on exhausts has broadened over the years. To me, only the very thick ones are worth it. Those are not painted on but deposited on via a different process and is expensive. But at that point, road debris, rock, pebbles, etc could damage it.

Can you please explain how turning on the heat inside the cabin makes the coolant hotter?
6,500 RPM -> 5,500 RPM , only drops 1000 RPM after an upshift and it has to keep doing those shifts pretty much all the time at high RPM.
It held up pretty well regardless. Including the engine which is a more traditional V8 that doesn't like (or need) high RPM, constantly near redline because of short gearing.
And owner commented it was due to poor transmission maintenance/service from a shop, so considering that, held up quite well.
That girl was cool as heck though xD
Of course she knows him very well and she knows that there is always a camera with him... 😁
128dB limit. That's quite lucky. The noise restriction is around 102-105 on UK circuits.

We're going to need a follow up on the repairs required.
I did two laps the day after this video was filmed and the car was fine in automatic mode, transmission temp never went beyond 100 degress celsius. It just needs a new oil change to fix the overfill issue.
If they could, Germany would ban fish for swimming too much.
They tell people hear in a America that peoples race cars are to loud for the race track. It's a race car and yes it is going to be loud without street exhaust and mufflers. It is usually because people buy houses next to a race track and get mad when they hear race cars. Well you moved next to a race track what did you think was going to happen?
On the high speed shifts you can really see that thing slipping trying to engage the next gear. Glad I have a manual transmission. (:
The only way to fly.
lmao a trail of smoke behind you, "transmission hot" warning - let's put it auto maybe it will fix itself :D
Smoke is supposedly from the trans fluid being overfilled at the last service
From watching Misha's videos, I have learned cooling is # 1 importance. What a cool car

there's a "Dismiss" button under it, but there must've been a hidden "IGNORE" button under Misha's foot
Ford mustang boss has a metal air scoop that sits just below its transmission to help keep it from overheating. I don't really care for any Ford of any kind but I did make my own air scoop out of eighth inch aluminum and mounted it on a cross member so it sits in between the exhaust and transmission and I gotta say it works perfectly. I have a 2018 Silverado that has a trannie that gets way too hot but not any more. Check into it my guy, you won't be disappointed with the results.

14:09 till 14:16, there's your answer, When a car produces 900NM you don't need to wrap it around the red line in every gear constantly, you could have kept the Engine between 3000 and 5500-6000rpm and it would have been just as quick, and kept the noise down to a reasonable level not to get banned. After all Misha, you know where all the noise pick-up points are around the Ring. you naughty boy, behave yourself. LOL Awesome content. Enjoyed watching as always

Having a sound decibel limit at a race track is the equivalent to wiping before you poop! That's just stupid, it's a race track, there's nothing quiet about auto racing!
Exactly! Guess they're preparing for EV racing!
They were out on the track during a tourist session, it becomes a public toll road with no speed restrictions, but vehicles must fall under public road rules for exhaust dbl's. The ban was for the rest of the day and they could return the next day and do it all over again.

10:17 dat smoke 😲
If you are getting a shift denied warning, that's usually from the transmission getting too hot. These don't do good at excessive prolonged speed. The transmission is the wekness for this car. The trans cooler is too small. You shoukd reqch out to Ben Hardy who had one of these and experienced this issue with it. Same thing for the Mustang GT500, except not as bad.
Is he based in Germany?

That ZL1/1LE is so fast! It overtakes everything with such ease. Albeit there were a lot of family sedans on the road.

If you're manual shifting it drags clutches to speed up shift times that creates heat. Leave it in auto and track.
Manual mode on dyno with my a10 1le was 30hp less that's a bunch of drag, performance shift mode for 1hr+ on track it didn't miss a beat. But 1le a10 have a deep sump pan. Brakes on regular zl1 have backing plate that need to be removed for track prep, and in heavy braking tracks addition of ct5bw brake cooling scoops and a fluid swap cures the brakes.
on which days can you drive on the gp track? I am looking forward to come to nurburgring and I wanna know some good info's before i actually come there

Auto overheated - change oil.

3 months ago (edited)
What a wonderful experience thank you Misha! Just to clarify the transmission issue is entirely my fault. I've done countless laps in other racetracks without stopping and overheating but this time I sent the car to a mechanic I shouldn't have and they did an awful job replacing my transmission oil, didn't drain the old oil properly and overfilled with new oil. Weirdly the transmission never did overheat in automatic performance shift mode. I will fix this issue and do some more upgrades to the car and hopefully I'll take it to the ring again with Misha.
when you are banned on track take it to the street pefect logic
Overheating Trans, it happens with intense track driving, solution is to add a additional external coolerwith fan after the primary, only draw back it will take a bit longer to warm the trans to driving temp on cold days
Twin oil coolers on gearbox needed
was thinking that ,good aftermarket coolers might do the job
Its a regular zl1, its not a real 1LE, just has a fake 1LE wing.. yes the 1LE's have extra coolers for engine, trans, & diff..
Oh man. That car behaves just so well. Very smooth experience and it just bends to corners like nothing. It's like liquid around those corners. I think this is the best car around the track. Just so effortless, smooth and easy to bend to corners.
Come to America and drive my ZL1 1LE in California!
Great run! Still waiting for an actual 1LE on this channel. For the trans oil def need to prep the car for track day make sure it’s in tip top shape with good oil and right levels. For engine def 15W-50 or the new mobil 1 supercar dexos R 5W-50.
The SS 1LE & ZL1 1LE both take 0w40 Dexos R..
@@Clutch_Kick187 That is correct, for daily driving and track that is the standard all season oil as the 0W provides good winter viscosity and 40 weight for track. However, page 15 of Chevrolets high performance owners manual supplement, it also mentions SS 1LE, ZL1 5W-40 and 0W-40 or 15W-50 for track use and 15W-50 to be changed back to owner manual specified oil 0W-40 after track use. ZL1 1LE only: 15W-50 on track and change after 4hours of accumulated track time. Regarding the 5W-50 oil i mentioned, that is a new oil which was dexos r certified for the new C8 Z06 LT6 after the development of the Camaro and is overall a great oil for track use I would consider over 15W-50.
