Hi John. I also suffer from health anxiety and GORD. Just so you know, the Nissan procedure (to fix hiatus hernia and GORD) which is the surgical procedure you were referring to, is getting better over the years. Surgeons are able to do this surgery much more effectively recently. Anyway thanks for the tip. I also have my second endoscopy tomorrow and will be going for sedation this time!

Hiatal hernia is definitely induced by straining your abdominal muscles and a hard exercise. Be mindful of how hard you are on yourself. I do think it is more mechanical, rather than diet induced.

I honestly think mine was caused by excessive crying. I have anxiety and I often cried and when you do that your stomach goes up and down. Then I pushed it to the next level when I did leg raises at home while working out. I’m glad you are managing well, in my case it has affected every aspect of my life. I can’t even sit comfortably, I immediately feel acid coming up. Do you sleep on an incline? I really hate having to do that. My hernia is small but it has affected me so much I’m seeing a therapist. I’m 38 and I just keep thinking I shouldn’t be going through this, I should have known to be careful. Since I already have an umbilical hernia I shouldn’t have been doing leg raises.

@@Alexis_005 I am glad to hear. I am also at "getting used to" and I too use Aloe Vera - but in the form of juice... Diluted in water. Two times a day. I hope also that my stress levels will subside, as I am pretty sure the tenseness of abdominal muscles play a bad role here - it keeps pushing the stomach upwards and therefore it is hard to settle down and live with this condition if one doesn't get the stress under control...

Well by now we're all out of lockdowns and stupid restrictions and hopefully you're doing well. I actually dropped my doctor because a full year after the lockdowns were lifted here he still insisted on only meeting via Zoom and I didn't like that. I too have a hiatal hernia, diagnosed via endoscopy back in 2003! I have been on Nexium or Prilosec for over 20 years now and because of all of the recent reports and stuff all over online about how PPIs can be harmful long term, I've decided to go off of them. I weened off and took my last pill about 2 months ago, yet I still have what I believe to be rebound heartburn, which is worse than the regular heartburn that I used to get. I don't know how long it will last but if it continues much longer I'm just going back on the PPIs because life is miserable once again without them. It was a wonderful 20 years with zero heartburn and I'm really not liking having it back in my life. I don't know about the surgery. I've heard that you can't throw up anymore after the surgery and I can't imagine that.

You can't stop using your core muscles, it won't get ya relief. But one can and must stop worrying about the hernia all the times, ie. what if I do this will it hurt me? Doing moderate allround instead, this will better the situation.

Oouu my goodness......., am so happy to see this clip and read the comments here. I was also diagnosed with Hiatic Hernia 4 years ago. Struggling with anxiety and panic attacks since then and no one could tell me yet that this could be linked to this hiatic hernia. No doctor could help me with the anxiety yet. I landed up already 4 times attge emergency due to panic attacks because I thought I am getting a heart attack. Heart was tested and all ok but reflux and hitting hernia was three times independently diagnosed. this clip opens my eyes. This is crazy, could this be eventually the answer am looking for for 4 years?
But surprisingly this chest pains come immediately up in very threatening or stressful situations. Or by smoking or after few beers. I always think am getting a heart attack, just from an stressy call or an hectic email ? can this be?

I suggest trying a quick & easy alternative approach that just might work for you. Just drink a couple glasses of water and jump up and down for a couple minutes to jiggle the stomach back down to its normal position. No harm or cost in giving this approach a try. You should know quickly, in same day or in a couple days, if this approach helps.
Forty years ago, I did an activity which forced part of my stomach up through or past the diaphragm. It was a couple months later that I suddenly started having severe stomach pains. I was initially misdiagnosed by a doctor as having ulcers. It was a couple of years of misery before I realized that the doctor was wrong and I had gastric reflux disease, or GERD. GERD often happens naturally without a clear cause, especially with older people. Normally, the esophagus sphincter and the diaphragm sphincter muscles line up and reinforce each other. If part of the stomach is pushed or pulled up through the diaphragm, the two sphincter muscles don’t line up and stomach acid can more easily leak into the esophagus, causing GERD.
Other people suggest drinking warm or hot water to relax the muscles, I would suggest cold water so that the heavy water will stay in the stomach longer. I would also suggest doing it first thing in the morning so the volume of water won’t dilute the digestion process of other food. It may take a repeat on a few successive days for the esophagus to adapt to the new longer length for the stomachs to stay in its new proper position. I would repeat the process anytime I got heartburn or acid taste in my mouth. I have been trouble free for over 35 years now, and can eat anything I want and take no meds for anything. I later learned of a gastroenterologist in Michigan who recommends this process also; maybe others now also.
The body needs strong hydrochloric acid in the stomach to trigger the esophageal sphincter to close, to break down bulk foods generally, and to separate protein into the amino acid components to be effectively absorbed from the small intestines for use to make new proteins our body needs. Most or all GERD medicines block the production of or neutralize the hydrochloric acid which then interferes with protein digestion and interferes with esophageal sphincter closing. Both of those actions are counterproductive.
