Thanks to your channel I have developed a strong desire to have a Doberman breed as a friend and companion rather than just a guard dog. In my opinion, this video has shown great balance and responsibility in your inthusiasm for this breed. Through this video,, not only have you saved future dobbies from potentially ending up in a shelter, but you have saved many homes from potential disaster and/or disappointment. Your videos are extremely influential. Not only has this video shown great consideration for people and pets alike, it has shown me the deep love and respect that you have for this breed. Thank you.
Love that you took the time to write this comment, Carlos! It's great to read such encouraging things like this! Thanks so much! I really hope it does make a difference and helps some people!

i get my next dobey next week on the 25th! as a 20 year old who has experience with these pups my entire life- i will never get another breed. the most intelligent, well behaved breed i’ve ever encountered. your videos made it so clear on how my family trained our older doberman Riggs before he passed. i see so many things you do that they did and it’s all clicked. you sir have given me so much value i can’t even begin to thank you
That's awesome! Thank you so much for your kind words and congratulations on your next Doberman! So glad to hear you're getting something from these videos!
We have chicken and Rabbits freeland in the backyard. We have Friends to come for visit with there dogs. 80% of this dogs have a bad training. No comands, bad leash trained, a lot of hountingproblems, or havent respect (private mean). The only Dog to havnt no problems ~ you get it ~ is a Dobermann... (and a German Shepard is the same Owner). He bring the dogs as a puppy and trained it in our backyard. The cats are hounting from my chickens ;-))
Sivan my European came to me at 8 weeks, is soon to be 17 months with major trainers and she remains a sweet loving beautiful baby girl monster. Your European sounds mellow compared to mine. I think I'm jealous.
@@summerstarr9339 I am not saying she is mellow I am saying that this helped me to train her , she is not that mellow . She runs with my shoe and hides it and many more 😁😁
I rescued my doberman from a shelter he was 1& a half came in as a stray so their was no history of his previous life, i have two 8 year old boys and i took one with me when we went to see the dog at the shelter, we were able to greet him in a play yard he walked in calmly and sniffed us and then started sniffing around in the yard then came back walked up to us my son pet him and he sat next to us, first couple of weeks at home he did amazing but we gave him his space i explain to my boys to respect him and let him get to know us better, we'v now had him for 4 months but you would think we had him for years, truly an amazing breed. My point is if you have kids and want to rescue a doberman i recommend asking the shelter if you can meet him first and get a feel of what your working with also its very important that you wait till your kids are at a age where they can understand to respect a dogs space, but other then that take that chance i know im glad i did ❤️
Enjoy your show, brings back so many memories of our Dobie, she was a big baby had her for ten years, then gotten very sick from cancer, she couldn't even drink water. We had to take her to the vet. said there was no hope for her, we stayed and watch him put the shot and she fell off with our arms around her. I miss her she was named Kristine, but thank you for sharing your joy with your babies.
Hi. Thanks for starting and operating this channel. I just adopted a 2 year old Doberman from my local shelter (on 12/17/21). Prior to her, I had Huskies for over two years when I was married. Therefore, I have some experience with dogs, and how to get them adjusted to a new home (a difficult experience might I add). However, this was my first experience with a Doberman, which is a larger breed than your typical Husky. When I saw Bailey for the first time (12/16/21), I was a little uneasy as she was such a big dog. To be honest, I was quite intimidated by her. She was very shy when the lady took her out to meet me. This also added to my reason for feeling intimidated, as some dogs can bite when they feel unsafe or unsure. In addition, the lady at the shelter told me that she had no idea how she interacts with children or other dogs, so naturally I was hesitant on getting her. I left that day without her, and had to think about such a big decision as I knew nothing about her breed or history. I wanted to find out more about the breed, as some dogs are special (e.g., Belgian Malinois, which can be a disaster in the wrong household). As I started watching your videos, I began to feel more confident that this breed would do well in a family environment, and my fears were indeed based on stereotypes and media portrayal. Along with some urging from my brother, we got her this Friday as Dobermans are quickly purchased when at the pound. I have walked Bailey for the past three days, and I can confirm some of the behaviors you stated about this breed. They ARE indeed prey driven for sure. Bailey goes crazy at the site of cats and squirrels. This isn't a big deal since Huskies also have this behavior, and we learned the hard way that having dogs with high-prey drive and other small animals together in a home is a fatal combination. She is really good with my 12 year old daughter, and she is even fine with a tenant that rents one of my rooms. She had some interesting behaviors, as she is hesitant to go into hallways and other rooms in my house. I assume that her previous owners had her as an "outside" dog as she was even hesitant to come into the house at all the first day. Therefore, the first night she only slept indoors reluctantly. By today, Sunday, day three, she is sleeping fine inside my living room, and sleeps through the entire night. She is a FAST learner, I mean FAST. Huskies are incredibly difficult to train as they have a strong will, so to see this breed just absorb instruction and follow through so quickly was astounding. She stopped a lot of co-dependent behavior within three days, and she can now sit in a spot by herself without rushing to put her snout on my lap like she did on day one and two. I can't speak for all adoption cases, but I can share some of my experiences as someone adopting an adult Doberman with zero experience with this breed and zero knowledge about her individual history. Thanks for all the info, and I am happy to say that so far, I have made a great decision in adopting a Doberman.
I just brought home a female Doberman (9 weeks old) I have a 5 year old female mutt (She is GREAT, super patient, loving, but also isn’t a push over) she has already kept our puppy in check and plays great with her.
Just brought my Dobe pup home Sunday - 9 weeks old. (4th of my life). She's gorgeous and both champion parents so has a great bloodline. What's more she's super smart, can tell she's a real thinker. But haven't even had an accident on the floor since Monday morning and she's going outside each time I bring her out which is nearly every hour, since I'm working from home an able to. Its fun at this age when they're measuring everything, the stairs, couch, porch. But everything dangerous is closed off of course but its fun seeing her confidence grow as she climbs one stair or tries to hop on the couch, which I give 2 more days and she will be doing.
Wow I was thinking about getting two puppies together so that they didn’t feel lonely when I leave the house. I’m glad you mentioned the litermate syndrome
Regarding rescues. I currently have my fifth rescue and for the past dozen years or so I’ve volunteered with a Doberman rescue. I advise folks considering a rescue to go through a reputable rescue organization that uses foster homes. In this manner you can get valuable feedback on the dog’s perceived behaviors. Many times we don’t recommend dogs be placed into homes with children under age 7, and sometimes not under age 12. In addition, we conduct a home visit where everyone who will come into contact with the dog must be present. The home visit is conducted to answer questions about the dog and breed and also for us to screen the candidate as a good potential home. A good rescue is an advocate for the dog! There are times the rescue is accused of being too strict on the qualifications for adoption. Of course, everyone sees themselves as ideal candidates. But, rescues have seen successes and failures and we do everything we can to ensure success, a permanent home for the dog where the family and dog thrive. A lot goes into successfully adopting a rescue dog. A good rescue will give you the guidance you need!
Our doberman loves our bunnies! We had a bunny in our home before we got our 2 month old pup. He is now almost 6 years old & he loves all 4 of our buns & has never played rough with any of them.
I've heard a lot about same sex aggression in Dobermans, most breeders will not even sell you a puppy if you already have a dog of the same sex. I have a 6yr old neutered male and have never had this problem, almost 1year ago we adopted a male german shepherd and they get along great, then a month ago we fostered an intact male doberman, the 3 boys loved eachother and never had problems. And we occasionally dogsit male dogs from family.
You explained something to me. When we got our first Dobie she came from a family who had multiple young kids and had to get rid of her. My dog was 6 months at the time. The kids were terrible. When we got her there was just me and my older brother and she was fine with us. So now that makes sense. She was great with us. Very sweet, loving and protective of us. She was probably happy to be out of that chaotic household. I loved that dog and have very fond memories of her. She's the reason I have one now. As spoiled as he is now. That's my bud. Wouldn't trade him for anything.
This is definitely all amazing tips! Sultan was not socialized before I got him from a long time friend! In just 3 months of me training him he has done so good! Iv found the best way for him personally to socialize with my male miniature schnauzer is to have them both Muzzled during playtime as to be very careful that one cannot hurt the other until they are fully used to one another my Doberman was already well socialized with cats and children and in fact he is more overprotective of my children then he is anything else!
That's such great news that your training has gone well! Yes, agreed! Dobermans can be very protective of children. You're doing a great thing with socializing frequently. Arlo said to tell Sultan hi!
You are so awesome bro! I have a 5 month old doby and I watch your videos for guidance! He started basic command training last week and its going well but I still watch you for the extra help! Keep educating us man!
Both my husband n I used to watch this channel before bringing home our first baby cocomani n we have been helped soo much..till now we watch the channel n want to say thanks to John..
Thank you for all the great information you give. My family are picking up our first dobby puppy this coming Tuesday. It's a Blue Doberman, we have been watching all your videos on this breed for the past month. It's like binge watching Netflix, however we are binge watching your videos! Thank you again for explaining every scenario that seems possible.
I recently found this channel because in the future I want to get a dog and I was looking into the Doberman because both my parent have told me about the positive experiences with the ones they’ve met, and I have learned so much about the breed. In fact, Dobermans are at the top of the list right now and seem to be a good fit for my lifestyle (assuming nothing changes too much in the next few years)
Love your video Just took the 1100 mile round trip To visit my breeder. I got the chance to meet the sire and dam and look at the family tree and the many awards and accolades they have . IPO, IGP And more. . These pups will have strong lineage. I secured a male pup and couldn’t be more happy with my choice of breeder. Should have my pup around Christmas time......’m glad I did my research(several months) on breeders, Dobermans in general American vs European. A big thanks goes to you, John, for all the information you have provided on your channel over the last year. So thank you ! Keep up the great work.
I’ve been watching your channel since I got my baby Novia (12 weeks) who is my first and only puppy! I work at a pet hotel and I’m able to plating her everyday which is great for her socializing! We are working on her recall and and the stay command is the only thing we are having problems with and the crate training
Your insight is spot on; in my opinion. Having had only three all of whom have sadly passed on. It may sound macho to have a dog with a lineage dedicated to protection but in reality, the average family doesn’t need that.
I own 9 cockatiels, 2 parakeets, a 12 year old much beloved cat and I still plan on getting a Doberman. My cat does not go after my birds while in their cages, but, of course I put the cat out when I let my birds out of their cages for exercise. Maxi is a very well fed cat!! I would not ever want him hungry!! I am expecting and waiting for a small inheritance to come through because I want to have the $$ to do it right. I found someone close (62 miles away) who breeds Dobermans and American Stafford Terriers. I have already spoke to her and she assured me her Dobies do not have any of the terrible genetic diseases that some have. I do not have a dog now but grew up with an Airedale Terrier. I want a female classic black and tan Dobie and I don't care if it's an American or European as long as there is no health issues and the temperament is right. Your videos have helped me so much and I continue to watch to learn from you and others.
I can't believe I didn't subscribe... I'm one of those people you mentioned who were watching all along and not subscribed🤣🤦🏼♀️. I took care of that now. Thank you so much for your channel...I will be needing you the end of this year when I will hopefully be getting a new puppy!
We are a large family where the kids definitely out number the adults.(6 kids ranging from 16 to 4 y/o) We don’t have an issue with our 4 month old Doberman with all of us. We have do have a very busy house and we did noticed as new faces showed up our Doberman gets very shy and will hide behind my wife or I. This weekend was Easter and we are the host home for most of our family events(12-14 adults and 13 kids. We also host a life group every week that we have up to 18 adults and sometimes up to 30 kids) With all that said our Doberman was very anxious around everyone at the house other than people he knew. He started growling at people and snipped at a couple people. Like I said earlier we have a lot of people in and out of this house and we love our Doberman named Tucker but we can’t have a dog doing these things in our home. We start professional training tomorrow with a local trainer but I am curious of your thoughts. Thanks for all the videos!
Hello John, I find your channel very informative and you provide a lot of training tips that help a lot. For me personally, the Information you have provided has helped me with my dobie. Thank you so much!
Great channel, I stumbled on it out of necessity. We just adopted a 3 month rescue puppy that was said to be a herd/hound mix but DNA results revealed to be over 50% Dobbie. This is our 4th time raising a puppy but I noticed her behavior was different immediately and our usual training techniques were being marginally effective. We currently have two very calm and laid back pets, a 6 year old male cat and 4 year old female Frenchie mix and she is being very confrontational and rough with them (i.e. biting during play and when they’re back is turned) so we’ve had to intervene because she’s hurting them especially our small breed who is very submissive. I know she’s still young and learning-and yet to be spayed-but I’m worried about the safety of our other pets. Our family is watching your videos and adjusting our training, keeping her active to expend energy, while, of course, supervising, trying to correct, distracting with toys and keeping them separate when possible in the hopes to improve things but she’s persistent. Any advice on what else to try? TIA
I love your videos. I've loved Dobermans since 1997 and was a K9 Handler at LAFB. Your affection and enthusiasm for 1 of my favorite breeds is great to watch. Thank you for sharing all this good info!
I love watch your videos and really want a male European Doberman one day, just like Arlo. He’s such a good looking dog. I am learning as much as I can now.
I've never seen so many Dobermans in any rescues up here in MA. They are very hard to find up here. We recent lost our dobie girl. She was a great dog who we adopted when she was 7. I just subscribed as I was part of that "80%" too.
Your kids are the cutest things ever! Arlo is pretty cute, too. Your videos are always spot on, too. In case anyone is interested, the Doberman rescue group in Arizona (blanking on their name right now) has a great website where they explain in detail the slow introduction method when you have pets already, then bring new ones of any age into your home. This method is amazing for integrating new pets into your household.
Thanks so much for the compliment, Cathryn! If you remember the name of the rescue group in Arizona, feel free to post it here. I'm sure a lot of people could benefit from that introduction process! Arlo says hi!
@@DobermanPlanet sorry I was so brain dead! The group is Desert Harbor Doberman Rescue of Arizona. Fantastic group, and I live in South Dakota, so no reason to plug an Arizona group other than their dedication to this breed. And hello Arlo! Tony and Ziva say hi right back!
Good advise, John. It is because we had young children that we also did not get a rescue. I could only see myself getting a rescue when the kids go out on their own. On a side note, it took our adult cat two years to finally not see our Dobe as a threat. They are not friends. The cat just tolerates the dog and keeps a close watch on him while she is in the same room with him.
Great to hear from you, Suzanne! That was probably a wise choice on your part with the rescue and children - avoiding lots of possible conflicts. Have enjoyed reading some of your replies to people's comments as well - you have a wealth of information!
My guy is a rescue & he came from a home where there was domestic violence & when they fought the dogs (he & a small dog) would escape & roam. This last time, he was out 8 months thru the winter & when finally caught he was only 56 pounds. Now, he has a wonderful home but I do see his PTSD every once in awhile. He is THE PERFECT GENTLEMAN & my sweet sweet boy “Hanz”. I am experienced with Working-line(IPO/DVG/Schutzhund) German Shepherds so I confidently but cautiously adopted him after he met & interacted with our 4 other dogs wonderfully. He is my shadow & our top bitch has taught him well💕💕💕
I'd like to add to the point about rescue dog triggers. I just adopted a large, 87 pound, 3 year old dog who is a real sweetheart, but I am discovering that he definitely has triggers. After being an absolute love for two months, I looked over to see him in the bathroom doorway snarling at me. This was full out aggressive stance from a large dog, so it was more than a bit upsetting. He eventually turned slowly and backed into a bedroom. I could get him to come to me if I sat down in the bathroom. He'd come really slowly and cautiously and let me touch him but eventually he would growl and back away again. Was it my position? I was standing in front of the mirror with my hands up doing my hair. Was it the hair dressing I was using? I thoroughly washed my hair twice and he calmed down and was ok, I tested being in the same position again, and he was fine, so I'm thinking it was the new hair dressing. Needless to say, that's going in the trash. The second incident happened a week ago when I was fooling around dancing as I cooked dinner. He was a good 20 feet away in the hall when I did a silly can-can type of dance. He snarled at me and backed towards the stairs. I'm guessing that he's been kicked in his former life, so raising my feet in his direction, even if I'm a room away is on my current list of things not to do. A friend of my sister had a wonderful rescue Doberman. For some reason, putting on a hat changed him from a friendly goofball into a snarling, barking aggressor. Take the hat off again and he's perfectly fine. I am all for rescue dogs. All of my dogs have been rescues. I don't believe that a triggered rescue is out to kill or even out to necessarily bite, at least not right away. You're looking at a confused and upset animal who thinks it may be under attack for some reason in its past that you are not aware of. Stay calm. Don't approach. Use your voice, in a tone that the dog associates with calmness (not roughhousing), praise and treats to let him know that it's still you. Try to figure out what smell or action set him off and undo it as quickly as you can. Allow him to retreat and don't follow. The aggression is a sign of fear, so yelling at him at that point would probably be counter productive. Close a door between you if you can do it without approaching him. Above all, don't freak out, don't go ballistic, stand tall, stay cautious but friendly, and don't cower. An adult can handle it but a kid may not know what to do if a dog freaks out from being provoked by an unknown trigger, so yeah, I'd be cautious about large rescue dogs with an unknow past and young children. Not all past histories are necessarily bad. I had a rescue German Shepherd with a borderline obsessive interest in motorcycles of all kinds, so I'm guessing his previous owner had a motorcycle. We all have past baggage, including dogs. Don't let that put you off saving a life and adopting a wonderful rescue animal.
Introducing my dobe pup to my cats went well! I suggest having “cat ambassadors” which is letting the friendlier or bolder ones meet him first since they’ll accept being sniffed or pushed around a bit more. The problem I’m having tho is my dobe testing boundaries with my other dogs 😅 (not same sex)
Thank you so much man, I was about to make either of the two mistakes you just mentioned. Bringing in litter mate that too another female or get another one after 3-4 months. Also I the pup I have right now that I am unsure of could be of IGP/IPO, she has off the roop energy and strength, biting habits, at the age of 63 days. She’s at really good health and my wife and I but I just suspect that in future she may need a lot of workout.
My youngest dobe was raised with 2 cats. He came to us at 9 months. We have 4 cats and 1 female dobe we got as a puppy and a dobe/mastiff that I was an foster fail with. The other dogs are great with our cats especially the mix. But our newest boy...one cat in particular he just wants to like her and mouth her. He and 2 of the cats sleep with us. The female cat he seems so interested in, at night time, he just sleeps and nuzzles her. She allows it and head buts him and purrs. But on the floor...completely different story. She has the means to escape but for the life of me I can't figure out why on the ground they react together so differently. But in bed, they are so sweet and seem to love each other. What is up here?
They may just be aware of the fact that they have much more room to play on the floor, but on the bed they could fall off and that that is a designated place for sleep. Animals are smart!
I am so close!! so close!! She's already given the green light... but we need an appropriate place to raise our pup... what obstacles have you encountered when traveling with your dobies? thank you
I have a chihuahua and he's not the most friendly towards new animals or people. But I also want to get a Doberman to look after him and the home. Before I do I plan on putting my chihuahua through some sort of training program to help socialize him more and work out some of his issues. He does listen to me but he also has his moments. Especially if he has a bone in front of him. I want a Doberman but at the same time I don't want to put my chihuahua at risk and knowing him he might actually be the one to start something. Not that he started anything with another dog before. Do you think a Doberman would be a good fit? If not any other large breeds that would protect a smaller dog?
Love these videos as I’m looking to get a dobbie pup soon but any tips for apartment living (large place but need to take stairs to get to) would be incredibly welcomed!!
Hi! i have a question for your Q&A. How do you get your dobermann used to being outside if they are reluctant to leave the house? Also, when is the next Arlo update coming up?
Dobes hate being away from their owners. I would NOT recommend just leaving the Doberman outside. They get heartbroken when they are left alone for too long. Get a different breed and get two so they can keep each other company if you want outside dogs.
@@suzannethepatriot8049 yes exactly this, but maybe I should elaborate i didn't word it well 🤣 as in when you take em out for walks and they don't wanna go that's what i mean 🤣
@@shivparekh1021 OK. Got it. Good to hear. I see dogs all the time chained up outside with no owners in site and it breaks my heart. Then I tell my dog how lucky he is to be so spoiled and loved. I think he already knows.
Hi, Shiv! Take baby steps and introduce them slowly. If they are afraid of going outside, make sure not to take them out when the neighbor's mowing the lawn or when kids are screaming in the yard. Make sure it's a calm, quiet environment when you venture out together - for short periods of time at first with toys and treats leading to longer periods. Playing will likely be a good distraction! If you have nice weather, leave the windows open so they can check out the outside from a safe distance, or if you have a storm door, same thing with leaving the main door open. The next Arlo update will be at 18 months of age - end of June/beginning of July. :) Thanks for your support!
You need to do a video on proper ear posting and removal of ear postings. Also what methods can help for Dobi’s that have a strong whip from side to side. Causing them to pop out their post.
I want two Dobies. Unsure of which sex, but two. I wanted them together but this video has me thinking about waiting a year or two in between before I get another since I plan to have them trained to the full extent.
@@evanmcswain6183 We switched to Purina Pro Plan Sport. The vet recommended this food for our very active dog. She thought it was one of the better brands out there.
I love your channel. My doberman died two month ago. My sister had a 2 years old doberman and she can no longer keep her, so I am hesitant to keep since she doesn’t even obey her only the husband. So is there a way to train her to obey me? If not I will just not take her in since I do have cats and a American bully and don’t want any accidents happening
Only dog that ever attacked me was a Doberman but it was kept as a ‘guard dog’ by our neighbors for their construction equipment. I was very young & have always felt guilty because that dog ‘disappeared’ after that & was replaced by a hound. Since we lived in a rural place & it was the 70’s I can ONLY GUESS WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM🥺🥺🥺🥺Now I have my own Doberman & see all of the mistakes that were made with the original Doberman in my life
Cool vlog and I agree with almost all the points that you have pointed out just two I do not agree with is spayed/neutered and IGP/IPO bloodline. First spayed/ neutered why should I have to do that, to me that is cruel to the animals you should be able to train your puppy or dog when this procedure is not done or else you would be considered a irresponsible dog owner my Doberman is not neutered and do not have any aggression issues yes I have run into a couple of times with the same sex dog intact but with consistent training this can be avoided and being Alpha means also that you are in control not the dog. Also having a puppy with parents that IGP/IPO titles to them should not be any problems introducing them to the family. My dog's parents are both titled with IGP/IPO and never had any issues bringing it into the family again should not have this type of breed or inconsistent training. Also my Doberman has his IGP/IPO level 1 title and still no issues just have to be Alpha and being consistent with your training and then all will be good at the end. Other than that great vlog and keep them coming!!!
I, actually, opted for a Rottweiler THIS time...I like that they are very bulky and muscular and they seem to have very similar temperaments and personalities as my beloved Dobermans. I lost my beloved Doberman 8 month's ago from DCM...He was 6+ years old. He was THE PERFECT DOG!!!! Regarding interaction with other animals: Even though he was 3 year's old when I moved from the Maine backwoods to Texas (not exposed AT ALL to livestock) all it took was a little training to teach him not to kill my chickens, chase cows, etc. He even helped herd the Pygmy Goats to and from the barn!!! Yet, he would kill or chase hawks, coyotes, possums, etc. Critters that weren't part of our homestead! I just thought I'd share my experiences with my Doberman regarding livability with other animals. All of my livestock had no problems with him being around...They trusted him. 💕 Even the chickens! I KEEP watching your videos because you have LOTS of really excellent advice! I have learned so much from you!!! Thanks so much!
@@suzannethepatriot8049 Honestly, this is my first time having a Rottweiler, and he's a young pup...But, I am seeing great potential with him. He reminds me SO MUCH of my previous Dobermans. I do prefer the elegance and musculature of the European Dobermans vs the Rottweilers...But, I am really loving my sweet, bulky boy! It will be interesting to see how well he does in the long run compared to my Dobermans. I'm pretty confident that he will do just as well because he is exceedingly trainable...just like my Dobermans. I plan to buy him a pool...I can see already that he'll have a harder time with the Texas heat...Conversely, he ENJOYS cold weather, whereas, I always had cold weather gear for my poor Dobermans! 😉
@@hectorskmetija3015 Make no mistake...I LOVE Dobermans!!! Just thought I'd try something different, this time around. Especially, since I lost my beloved Doberman at SUCH a young age to DCM. 😭
@@homesteadgmad8223 Glad to hear your Rotty is already a good dog. I have been to Texas and, I would imagine that heat would get to a Rotty!!! Enjoy your new dog!!!
I never knew about that littermate syndrome. I was planning on getting a Dobbie train him and when he is 12 months get a GSD as well. I wonder if that be too close in age as well.
I brought my dobie daisy at 9 weeks. Cat in our home. Luckily my daughters were off to college. Asked them to take The cat. Daisy as a puppy would grab and drag the cat from underneath the dining table. In daisy's defence...the kitty was too docile. People told me that the cat would fight back and scratch a nose and the dobie would get the message. Never happened. High prey drive for sure. Love my dog. Dobermans are amazing companions. Just not for everyone. They're work.
We just got our new Dobie puppy in mid January, he is actually really well behaved considering he is a puppy. I have started to have issues with him barking like crazy at the neighbors when we are in the yard. He will come back to me when I call him m but just for a few seconds and then goes back to bark again. I usually end up having to out him back in the house while I continue play with our 5 year old doberman. We never had those issues with her and I am not sure how to help the new guy through this. Any tips would he appreciated.
Thanks for your channel. I just got my Doberman a few months ago (he is a protection dog) and he is great with people. However he does not like to be hugged and has snapped at my wife and myself a few times when we hug him. We are worried that when friends come over they might try to hug him and he could bite them. What can we do to address this issue? Many thanks
It maybe seem simple, but don’t hug him. A lot of dogs hate that. Also have a look at the stress or warning signs dogs give when they are “trapped.” Could save you a bite in the future.
We are in the " research " stays of deciding on a Doberman. Both older 57+ both work full time, but we own company, so split shift. Dog may only be alone 2 hours a day. My concern, my husband been around Doberman dogs (brother raised) I have been around lap dogs. My concern is, will I fear this dog? Should we get a rescue? Should we start with puppy? Seems like an obvious answer, but nerves of "not being able to control a large dog" intimates me. Does your wife intact with the dogs? Are you the only alpha or is she and kids too? Thanks, any answer to anyone of these questions will be appreciated
So a guard dog Doberman can’t be used also as a family pet? Was looking to get one that can be like a normal Doberman but still have guard dog instincts that can be used if needed.
i think they can work as family pets you just need to avoid the highly bred working kinds due to intensity(it wont reduce it completely but you get the kinda protection you might want which isnt over the top) they also seem pretty trainable and adjustable so its mostly due to age because a pup is more curious and socialization and training
Hey, Brandon! You can have a Doberman who protects your family - many people do! They just take extra time and money for proper training. Thanks for reaching out!
@@salvadorcastillo8828 I was looking at the highly bred ones. I would need it for protection purposes but don’t know if I could commit 2+ hours of training daily
I have Doberman brothers... And they live with a cat 😂... And both Dobermans eat side by side 😂.. Now i will say Jango and Boba i have worked together with since day 1 and have have had them since pups.. No issues my way BUT they have no issues being apart.. They go to the stores and they both sleep with us every night in bed.. Having 2 of the same sex and litter can be done.. BUT you have to keep everything equal and put in the time with them and get them plenty of exercise... My yard is 5 acres so that definitely helps
I really like the look of the European Doberman, but I don’t necessarily need a dog with those IPO and other working dog bloodline traits. I’m looking for mostly a family dog with some guard dog capabilities. Do you think it’s possible to find a European Doberman with that kind of temperament?
If I live in a decent size apartment with two floors one on the 9th floor and another that has a outside area, how should my doberman go to the washroom?
Hi been watching your videos for sometime now I have a question on neutering for my male doberman he is 4 years old now...does his attitude change after getting it done, he is starting to whine a lot now we live in the country with not to many dogs around..so should I or can I leave him and not get neutered
We had a red male and had him neutered around 4 years old. We hadn't planned on neutering him but the vet did a prostate check at his checkup and said it was slightly enlarged. They recommended the procedure to help prevent any issues such as prostate cancer in the future. His attitude did not change at all after having it done. Most dogs will calm down slightly as they age, but I do not think that is related to neutering/spaying in my experience. He still played and acted like a puppy until the last few weeks of his life. He was our first but definitely not last Doberman.
I have a 8 month old dobie. We rescued a diffferent breed puppy (4 months) and they are best friends. Probably because they are both puppies. My dobie is definitely the alpha because he is older. The other breed will grow bigger than him but he is soooo chill that he doesn't mind letting Hannibal play alpha lol. I also have 4 cats...the cats were here before the dogs so for the most part they leave them alone.
Thank you.

My Dobe has his own kitty. I don't like cats but he needed company in the daytime
They can definitely keep each other company!
Can you bring a kitten home to a 4 year old Doberman?

I rescued my doberman from a shelter he was 1& a half came in as a stray so their was no history of his previous life, i have two 8 year old boys and i took one with me when we went to see the dog at the shelter, we were able to greet him in a play yard he walked in calmly and sniffed us and then started sniffing around in the yard then came back walked up to us my son pet him and he sat next to us, first couple of weeks at home he did amazing but we gave him his space i explain to my boys to respect him and let him get to know us better, we'v now had him for 4 months but you would think we had him for years, truly an amazing breed. My point is if you have kids and want to rescue a doberman i recommend asking the shelter if you can meet him first and get a feel of what your working with also its very important that you wait till your kids are at a age where they can understand to respect a dogs space, but other then that take that chance i know im glad i did ❤️
That cute kid holding that cute puppy on the couch. Life goals.
You have a gift to be able to talk about something very serious in a respectful lighthearted manner. Great video 😊
That means a lot Kim! 😊
Can't wait till this channel gets millions of subscribers!!! Content here is super good!!
Thanks so much for the kind words, Monique! Super encouraging to hear your support!
Weve always had neutered males that got along great ..females with other females, yes but ..not as much if their 2 Divas .the boys are more goofy
Same my boys are just goofy and fun loving.
What a great experience and testimony to go along with this video, Valerie! Thank you for sharing that for others to see as well. Much appreciated!
I learned how to train my Rottweiler puppy almost entirely through your channel, thank you so much. He’s so well behaved

To visit my breeder. Your insight is spot on; in my opinion. Having had only three all of whom have sadly passed on. It may sound macho to have a dog with a lineage dedicated to protection but in reality, the average family doesn’t need that.

I have a Dobbie and I know most of the stuff that gets put into these videos...BUT I still learn a little something with every video.

So glad to be able to help, Marta!

My Dobie was a great mouser but never hurt the cats. As you mentioned, she met the cats when she was a pup.
Hi John, would you please share your thoughts regarding liability insurance for dobermans? Thanks for what you’re doing for this amazing breed!
He is my shadow & our top bitch has taught him well💕💕💕
I bought 2 Doberman puppies of the same age I managed to train them together and they are very well behaved
Hi. I have two dobermans of the same age male and female /and i think this was really helpful to solve their behaviour problems
I love the van
Can you do a video on how to get a Doberman to stop biting furniture
Toys, toys and playtime. You must be vigilant when they are young and encourage them to chew is toys and not furniture. They get the idea quickly.

Youre such a nice guy👊
Thank u
love all of the information, best channel on youtube
Thanks for taking a few minutes to write this comment - your support is really appreciated!
Some very informative and helpful tips here! Thank you! Love your videos. So clear and concise, plus tons of fun to watch!
Well done and these are serious Anomalies !
Awesome content!
Love the video thanks a lot
3:47 can the cat be adult and doberman a puppy when they're introducing bcs I have adult cat and wanna get puppy doberman
I am so close!! so close!! She's already given the green light... but we need an appropriate place to raise our pup... what obstacles have you encountered when traveling with your dobies? thank you
Thx i appreciate ur work.
First comment here❤️❤️😍😍 Hi John and Arlo!
Great video, John. Thanks!
Another great video. Thanks John!
I didn’t know about the igp/ igo situation! 😳
Hi! i have a question for your Q&A.
Having owned and bred Dobermann's for many years I have to totally agree with everything you said.
I will get a doberman in June, any recommendetions for food brand?
Purina pro plan has been great for my pup. Homemade maybe best but a lot of work. John has diffrent recommendations also. Good luck.
Nice!
@@evanmcswain6183 We switched to Purina Pro Plan Sport. The vet recommended this food for our very active dog. She thought it was one of the better brands out there.
@@suzannethepatriot8049 great choice same line my pup eats.
For sensitive tummies, like my girl- we use taste of the wild salmon
I love your channel. My doberman died two month ago. My sister had a 2 years old doberman and she can no longer keep her, so I am hesitant to keep since she doesn’t even obey her only the husband. So is there a way to train her to obey me? If not I will just not take her in since I do have cats and a American bully and don’t want any accidents happening
I had a red Doberman nearly bite my face off in 1984 when I was 4 years old. Probably sounds strange, but I’ve wanted one ever since!
Regarding interaction with other animals:
Even though he was 3 year's old when I moved from the Maine backwoods to Texas (not exposed AT ALL to livestock) all it took was a little training to teach him not to kill my chickens, chase cows, etc.
How do you like the Rotty in comparison to the Dobe? I prefer the look of the Dobe so I would not get a Rotty, but they seem like good dogs.
Interesting I've never come across a Doby owner who has then got a rottie! In a fun🥺 way we are normally opposed to each other 🥴
@@hectorskmetija3015 Make no mistake...I LOVE Dobermans!!!
Awesome video!!!!
They're work.
thank you for the birf day vid
love your content thanks so much for this!
Wow 🤩
How would you know if you have a AKC dog what he was bred for? We didn't buy him through the breeder but we have his paperwork.
It is very possible.
i think they can work as family pets you just need to avoid the highly bred working kinds due to intensity(it wont reduce it completely but you get the kinda protection you might want which isnt over the top)
they also seem pretty trainable and adjustable so its mostly due to age because a pup is more curious and socialization and training
Not true! I’ve owned dobies for 60 plus years! Great guard dogs and excellent family dogs!!!
Can you help me stop Perseus (Doberman) from bullieing my ol lady ( Tiny, my adopted terrier mix) she was here first.
Thanks for all your great videos! Can you recommend any breeders ? Location does not matter!
I really like the look of the European Doberman, but I don’t necessarily need a dog with those IPO and other working dog bloodline traits. I’m looking for mostly a family dog with some guard dog capabilities. Do you think it’s possible to find a European Doberman with that kind of temperament?
Could you do a video on when is a good age to get your doberman puppy neutered?
I am contemplating on getting a dobermann and i travel a decent amount do they get car sick and are they good on the road
