This video celebrates 30 things I learned at 30 through living in France for 6 years. Some fundamental mindset shifts occurred for me as an expat living in France and the ways in which it has pushed me to become a better person. It's part of the French Culture and French attitude to life that stays with me!
Just some of the lessons include how French people enjoy the moment and live for experiences and connection with others.
And also, priorities! French people, in general, would prefer decent amounts of paid annual leave to more money. If you ask a French person if they could earn 20 000 more per year but only have 2 weeks holidays, most would say NON MERCI. There is something to learn from appreciating the most simple things in life and prioritising time with family and less, high quality things than working tirelessly for that big fat pay check.
The expat life in France can be a ballroom dance, a battlefield, a riot and a rave. All of these experiences accumulate and have a profound effect on you as a person.
This video is just scraping the surface, but if you have any other questions around my move to Paris France, or the experiences I had, I am always happy to answer your questions!
I hope you guys enjoyed this reflective video about 30 things France taught me. If you want to know more about living in France as an expat or have an experience to share of your own, please let me know down below!

Apart from all your points being fantastic, the one that resonated with me the most was the one where you spoke about the French being okay with earning a little less in order to have more quality time in life. I'm a single mother in NZ and my son is 13 now. It's just me and him. I'm working part-time and I've noticed that when Kiwis know this they instantly say things like " Ooooh he can stay on his own now after school, you can work full-time" or they will say in a very hurried tone " When are you going to work full time???" I can understand this notion however, for me, I love being able to eat breakfast and dinner with my child at our pace. I love being able to be at home with him after school so that I can just be there, I am the parent right? Technically, we do not go without anything in our life. I'm able to work fantastic hours (20 hrs per week) and then when I am home...I can be at home. I can do the chores, cook good meals without being exhausted, have conversations with him and watch movies and such with him. Yes we don't get to go on holidays or go out to fancy restaurants all the time but I still can afford to live well and most importantly...be with my child because as you say, you can always earn more but you can't buy time. Love it. Take Care Rosie : )

I can't agree more... French daddy here of two little girls (5 and 2), I decided to have a six months break in my career to spend more time with them. French laws allow any parent of a child under 3 to go for a part-time job, or a full break with the guaranty you get back your position and all the rights you had (bonus, seniority, etc) when it ends. Meanwhile I am not paid by my boss, but there are financial aids from the family allowance service.
At the end of the day, when it will be time to look back, I am pretty sure it's a choice one might regret not to do, rather than a decision that one might regret because no matter what our bank account look like, our time on earth is priceless.

Love hearing, "Salut TH-cam!", cuz I know its another Rosie vid! That is a very thoughtful rundown of things to appreciate. I am American. I was in a group of friends the other day and one is going to be in France for a few days soon. Another remarked on how rude the French are and because of your videos, I was able to defend their culture and their expectations of polite behavior that are so different from ours. I was able to explain what the cultural differences are and how we seem to each other. As humans, we judge each other from our personal perspectives. Most people who haven't lived outside their own country/ culture don't know that there are other cultures of "people who look like us" but don't think and live like us. We can create harmony and understanding for ourselves and others by embracing differences with curiosity and open mindedness. I appreciate learning that from you, Rosie! 💕

@@caciliawhy5195 we don't hate Americans and American culture but the values are different. So we have something trouble to understand. Donald Trump is not really loved in France so that why French people have something a bad opinion. 🤷‍♀️
I love the USA. The people are friendly. I would like to go here one time in my life. ❤️

    • @Ortisse
      @Ortisse 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

@@caciliawhy5195 I think most french people like american people and american culture but american people are very outgoing and french people more introvert, we seem a bit cold or even rude to you but it's our way to handle relationships.
For the culture there are 2 points, the first is we don't have the same values so it doesn't meam we hate each others just that we're are differents (I spent 1 year long time ago in DC, loved to experience the american way of life, but when I had to choose between staying there or coming back it was easy to decide. I'd love to come back for holidays but the US' values are to far away from the life I want for myself.).
The 2nd point is more around art. French people are really really REALLY proud of their history, language, cinema, music, food... English language and Hollywood cinema, pop music, Disney parks, netflix, even fast foods ... american's culture is very popular at the moment and it's spreading all over the world. We enjoy it a lot but at the same time it's very important to us to protect our heritage.
I don't know where you get the idea french people hate american, it's not true, we don't value the same things, we want to protect our culture but there is no hate in that.

As a French who's been living in the UK 20 deffo agree that it's easier to discuss important topics in France with people who have different opinion. In the UK, every chat about brexit ends up in insults. But then the French are a lot more interested in politics in general so they're more aware of the issues. Here most Brits have no idea how even their own government works. They have a lot of preconceived ideas and never bother checking if what they say is true. I guess because French people's lives revolve heavily around the administration, it's in our DNA to understand how things work to avoid making mistakes.

    • @BluePillowLDN
      @BluePillowLDN 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I also noticed that when you mention weight around native UK people they often get very uncomfortable. This is something I didn't observe until I met my French boyfriend. His friend was talking about food that his wife likes to eat and my boyfriend said something along the lines of "yeah that's good food to eat to loose weight" and his friend looked at him like he just slapped him in the face.
I completely understood that my boyfriend wasn't calling his friends wife fat, he was literally just saying that the certain type of food she eats is good to loose weight...i had to explain to him that people here are very sensitive when it comes to talking about weight.
He also has lots of issues with some of his Co workers as he is very critical and opinionated. If someone is doing something wrong he will correct them politely. This isn't well received here. Again I had to explain to him that if no one asks you, don't anything! Which he thinks is ridiculous. I really do see the culture differences and think we're better off living in France as he has way too many pointless arguments with people in the u.k all because of his culture. He especially gets irritated with people who don't speak proper English(slang) and expect him to understand. We go well together because I'm interested about French culture.

I moved to France, Montpellier 6 months ago to be with my boyfriend. He warned me about the paper work. the frustration, the time, the confusion. I can happily say that i now have my Carte Vitale. I pushed on ward and did not give up. So much harder when you cant speak or understand the language. communicate is so so important 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️
I find your channel so refreshing and helpful. Hearing your 30 things resonated with me. The being insecure in trying to speak French. Knowing that your not pronouncing it correctly, or you actually have used the wrong word, misunderstood what they are trying to tell you. OMG many times I have had to fight back tears b/c I have been so frustrated with myself. But you have to put yourself out there or you are never going to learn. ppl have been supportive and actually very helpful when they see you trying and struggling. THey know their language is a hard one to learn. Moving from Canada to France has been a complete life change. It has been such an eye opener to a whole new way of living. Canada is beautiful but WOW 🤩 France is on another level.

Living in France taught me to not be afraid to try new things. I lived in France for one year between the ages of 20 and 21, at a point in my life where I was facing graduating from university and having to enter the real world. I was so scared to take risks, but when I moved to France I tried to say "yes" to as much as I could. Visit a local farm to learn how they make goat cheese? Yes. Learn how to shear sheep. Yes. Dance like nobody is watching? Yes. It has been 5 years since I moved back to the UK and I am still saying yes as much as possible.

#30. So true, still struggling with English here 😅
A short story. Many years ago we hired a young Chinese lady. She could not speak a word of French when she arrived. She was stunningly pretty, everybody wanted to talk to her.
1 month later she was speaking French fluently. I was gobsmacked. I asked her what was her secret. She replied that in China almost everybody has 2 or 3 languages : official mandarin and 1 or 2 more local languages. On top she was living near the Russia border and so she could speak Russian and she learnt English at school. Learning French was a piece of cake for her.
2 years later she got married with a French colleague from a different part of the group (her popularity spreaded far beyond our site 😂).
    Happy next birthday Rosie!!!

#6 is so important. As an American who is so frustrated with the state of politics in our country I have found that too many people have checked out on what politics mean and how important it is to know what is going on. You need to know who you're voting for and understand that THEY work for YOU. There is a belief here that "Politics" is a dirty word, but that's because people have forgotten that voting in our representatives is our way of getting things done. We shouldn't be checking out of the process. That's how it gets corrupted. The French seem to continue to understand this. I marveled at the short "greves" they staged seemingly every other day when I was there, but now I appreciate it so much because I realize that is shows their commitment to making their every day what it should be.

@@katkit1479 These people are racists. Very different of strikes for justice, rights...
Strikes should not be considered meaningless if you are not harming someone. If trains are stopped because of a strike, we need to support the workers fighting for their rights and not letting them be crushed by selfish overrich guys who ruin public services for their own good even though we have the ressources, creating and perpetuating inequality. This also applies for education, health, energy, transport, and so on

After 9 years, I understood their question, and I am happy to be back in Aus, but France taught me a lot, and also made me appreciate my home counrty more. Bon anniversaire ! Getting visas and titres de séjour is a nightmare in France. You are right about the French systems seems to over-complicate everything with paperasserie and by trying to avoid their job by saying “NO’ as a first response in many offices. I relate to so much to many of your points about a French. French are real coconuts! That’s ok if it works for them. Learning FRENCH is très difficile! Je fais tant de fautes tous les jours. Merci pour une autre excellente vidéo. C’était géniale....

#30 easily. I'll have to partially contradict you on this one. Learning a language is easy, mastering is not. That's a lifelong process even for your native language, but there's a tipping point you reach where you realize you're not only talking in a different language, you're also able to think in that language. And that's an amazing feeling, it's just like your mind expanding.

I just discovered you and have enjoyed your videos, accent, perspective and candor. My family also has enjoyed my retelling of some of your exploits at the dinner table and we have all had a good laugh at the video of your introducing yourself as “Ms. Asshole’s” replacement.Everything that you have commented on hits home as we lived in Paris for 3 years and I wish that I could have rolled with the punches as well as you have. You are remarkably centered, balanced and thoughtful. I love your comments on lifting up others in society so that everyone can benefit with the basics of a civilized society. Our new America is so unbalanced now with autocrats and billionaires ripping all benefits away from the most vulnerable to line their own pockets. France could teach us many lessons.
I have no doubt that you will have an even more exciting thirties decade ahead. Go Rosie!

The coin in the supermarket trolley has existed since the 1980s, before that many people once loaded their shopping into their vehicle leave it there instead of putting it back in the planned location sometimes even just behind the car next to theirs. When the store closed in the evening, employees had to collect the carts. the supermarkets were fed up, they invented this consignment system

Happy Birthday Rosie, I have short showers due to hot water shortage but I still manage to rinse my soap. You better rinse just in case is not good for your skin. A lot of people also don't rinse the dishes from the soap in Australia. The only time I don't rinse the soap of me is when I have bath because I run out of hot water. May your 30s are as happy as your 20s. You are real pleasure to watch. I like the way you speak NZ language!!! And I like your French too. I have heard you speaking French!!!

Hi Rosie ! I turned 30 this year too, and it also made me think a great deal about life and the things I learned. I really appreciated this video ! You seemed really passionate about some of these things. I especially appreciate the fact that our country made you realise how important it is to make sure every single child is provided what they need, and the importance of not wasting. And the fact that a debate doesn't have to be an argument. It is essential to say things instead of keeping them inside. With time, it hurts more not to say something than saying it. I also love when you called us coconuts. WE ARE FREACKINGLY THICK COCONUTS !!!!! :D With time and a little bit of efforts, we open and reveal our true nature. And it also has to do with education and politeness. I feel like you really understand our country, our ways, and that was really moving. Of course, there are soooo many things to criticise in this country, but I'm glad you managed to appreciate us anyways. This video made me so happy !

Hi! I’m French and I spent more than a year in the US. This is a fact: it’s easier for a French person to acclimate in the US than for a US person to do so in France BUT it’s worth it as you say 😊
We are coconuts but because we only want real friendship with trust. In the US for instance, you can speak really quick with people BUT real friends are so hard to find. I ended up only trusting one or 2 people out of the hundreds I met….

Happy 30th birthday! Thank you for this video which made me feel real good about my country/culture/people. Most of the time I was like "ah yes, it's true we're often like that" and sometimes I laughed too (becoming resilient thanks to french administration and the sexual inuendos are quite true). I really love the way you're trying to understand how people think to make your opinion even about what you don't like in French people and our way of life. And happy to know that the very first lesson worth to mention is about appreciating food (of course it would be 😂).

Hi Rosie! Bon anniversaire!!! Just like in the US, every area has significant foods and customs and manners! My high school French teacher did say that learning a few words, sentences or just saying "hi" or properly asking for directions will get you lots of respect. It shows that you care about where you are at and want to make the effort. She said even if you don't speak perfect French or aren't sure, more than likely a French person will be able to figure out what you mean and will appreciate you trying. And she said more often than you might think, lots of them speak English so they may just start speaking English with you.

Don't know why it's so lovely to hear things about our country. But its is, thank you :D We miss you here.
It's incredible how fast you noticed those little things.
It took me 30 years understand the french paradox.
    > Eat more cheese, drink more wine, live longer.
    > Complain every single time, have so much days-off, and still have high productivity.
    > Being only 67M, and still have huge diplomatic voice.
The luck of living in France is real, and it takes way to much time to everyone, to realise it.

If the government GIVES you everything, they can take is ALL away. As an american who lived in England. I can attest to the horrors of living in a socialist system. Expectation. Entitlement. Laziness. it goes on and on. Work and pay for your way in life!

@@jamesrenecozens474 : government doesn't gives you... everything. Government gives " basics" for a human being life. ( BTW , it's not the government who gives. It's a society choice and we pay for collectively) That's allows to walk on streets without fear to be killed because people in neighborhood don't have enough to feed own family ( so... nothing to lose ) or not enough $ to vaccinate or take care of a sick or disabled member of family). For sure... "dérapages" exists. But overall I prefer this kind of countries. Having tones of things , 5 cars 4 bedrooms ...it's good. But , finally I'm driving one car at the time and sleep in one bedroom at the time. So.... BTW, we are neighbours (!?!) Montréal, 🇨🇦
