    My shih tzu is 13 and is almost completely deaf. When he had good hearing he knew not bark or whine, but now that he can’t hear us or himself he’s been barking louder, probably confused why he can’t hear himself. It’s just heartbreaking:(

      This is unfortunately quite common in older dogs. Working with your vet can be really beneficial - they may suggest things like supplements, trying an anxiety medication or even a pain medication trial, just in case some physical discomfort is contributing too. From the behavioural angle it can help to gently expose older dogs to different types of enrichment (Shay Kelly's group "Canine Enrichment" on Facebook is brilliant, also the book Canine Enrichment for the Real World - fab stuff in there). Some gentle games you might like to try to build confident are novelty party th-cam.com/video/ZndTFbiYdbI/w-d-xo.html cardboard chaos th-cam.com/video/AqJngpUbitY/w-d-xo.html and balance path th-cam.com/video/f0rhMP5WXnw/w-d-xo.html Even some little shaping games can really help build confidence and keep the brain active as they age th-cam.com/video/BpKjb42iJVM/w-d-xo.html These are older videos but hopefully will give some ideas :)

    My deaf dog constantly barks at me when she wants my attention, when the bathroom door closes or when she thinks I'm walking to the door for a potty break. (even right after coming in from one)
    Was there another video posted to help with this? Thank you!!

    I definitely need the training on how to get my 13yr old dog to stop barking at me for dinner or when I get her lead out. She used to be so quiet and I've tried pausing what I'm doing and ignoring her when she barks... and only resume the activity once she's quiet. She seems to have picked up to not bark when I'm getting her biscuits ready but she's starting to bark more at other times now.

      Hey Stacey! One thing to keep in mind is that once a dog is 8yrs + they actually enter the “senior dog” category. It’s really common to see changes in behaviour as our dogs age, particularly in those double-digits! Many elderly dogs do become more vocal and it can just be a sign that their brain is changing as they age. Skills like self control can be really tricky when their “hardware” starts to get a little rusty!
      A little modification you may wish to try is to proactively praise and even give a biscuit or two as reward for staying calm and quiet while you get those things ready. If she does happen to bark simply stop what you’re doing and help her to settle. Feel free to give her long strokes along her back if she enjoys that and reassure her with your voice, just as you would help a child learning to regulate their emotions. Many senior dogs need this co-regulation support 😊
      Too, things like new and varied enrichment and learning new tricks can help keep her brain in the best shape it can be well into her silver years 🐾

    Unfortunately I don't think my dog is barking because of any of these reasons. He recently became deaf, he is older. He never barked for 10 years until recently. Now he walks to a window and barks constantly. There is nothing out there besides squirrels or neighbors. I can't keep him away from windows. They are all over my house. And all windows are in his eyesight. Help. 😢

    My 3 yr old deaf ACD will go days being great and then days being stubborn and mean. I'm at my wits end. The only trainer who is near me won't return my calls after we had one very successful training session where she even tried to get us to attend her dog dance lessons. I need help.

    Our dog barks at the vibration of the train going passed, she feels it long before we hear it, she seams to respond to vibration

    • @k9conceptsdogtraining
      @k9conceptsdogtraining  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah this is really common. If it's something you'd like to work on, mark/reinforce those tiny behaviours that happen in the moments before she barks - things like tensing up, lifting her head and looking in the direction.

    Our old rescue dog Toby is almost completely deaf. He’s always been perfectly well-behaved and still is, except that he has started whining when he knows he is going for his walk. As it takes my husband a long time to get ready due to mobility issues, the whining gets louder and louder until Toby is almost howling by the time we actually get out the door. When we are going out without him he knows he is not coming with us, and doesn’t whine, and doesn’t seem to have separation anxiety:-When we go out without him he just lounges around and is usually asleep when we come home. Do you have any ideas? As this is the only issue should we just ignore it? It’s really just as though he can’t wait to get going!

    • @k9conceptsdogtraining
      @k9conceptsdogtraining  ปีที่แล้ว

      A quick easy fix that takes virtually no effort on your part is to simply give him something else to do while your husband gets ready. This could be as simple as scattering some of his dinner in a rolled up old towel! Toby snuffles for the food instead of whining! 😁

    So if my deaf dog bark at the other dog which me own when frustrated about bone, toy, etc. then this method does not work, or am I making a misunderstanding? When I don't want deaf to bark, I shut her mouth, but this intermediate tactic which you not advise. Thank you.

    • @k9conceptsdogtraining
      @k9conceptsdogtraining  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Miska! We never want to forcibly shut a dog's mouth as this can damage your relationship and even cause your dog to fear you. Instead, gently tap your deaf dog on the shoulder to get her attention (like you're tapping a friend on the shoulder!) and kindly ask her to go to her bed. Then give her a thumbs up and a big reward. This way she'll learn that any time she sees the other dog with a bone/toy etc she should go to her bed and mind her own business! 😁 Check out my video Does Your Dog Need Boundaries - this will get you started 😊

    My 15 year old doxin barks at me and whines trying to get what he wants. But even continues after he has been given everything. I would love a video or how to deal with this.

    • @k9conceptsdogtraining
      @k9conceptsdogtraining  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Brenda! Absolutely, I'll pop it on the production list. In the meantime, you can teach him how to ask "please" by teaching something like sit quietly at the door - > then we go out, touch your nose to my hand -> then I'll stroke you. It gives him a different way to get his needs meet without us losing our sanity! 😂 Also check out the boundary games video - if he's calmly resting on a bed he can't be barking at the same time 😉
