    DO NOT GET A PARROT UNLESS YOU'RE PREPARED TO CARE FOR PRETTY MUCH A 3-5 YR OLD CHILD. Parrots and cockatoos are EXTREMELY smart and have the mentality of a young child. Theyre not stupid birds. You need to treat them like you'd treat a child and you need to understand their social needs. A quiet parrot is a depressed parrot.

      +Asriel Dreemurr I have to disagree, I have a female eclectus and she is naturally very quiet and gentle. That's just her personality. She spends most of her day with me and has a rich life, she just chooses not to talk or make noise. :)

    Your description of Cockatoo's, especially Mollucans, was so off it was painful. They are NOT easy to take care of. It's like the equivalent of having a 2 year old child for the rest of your life. They destroy everything, you can't leave the house for more than 4 or 5 hours a day, you have to cook for them, they're unbelievably loud, they will not just entertain themselves, the upkeep of one will cost a lot of money, if they're not given enough attention they could end up biting or even worse plucking.
    I hope to god nobody got a Cockatoo after seeing your video.
    Also, from my comment it sounds like I hate Cockatoo's, so I'd just like to say that no I don't. I think Cockatoo's are the best companions possible, but ONLY IF you can take care of them correctly.

      You obviously haven't owned a green cheeked conure. The most sound they make is a tiny screech that you don't really notice. They also interact with other breeds of parrots and try to be sweet to gain other parrots attention.

      this video is off on most of these birds. Parrots can be amazing but they can also be like having a biting screeching gremlin - and I have one I love dearly but it is just not for all people and it the birds that suffer.

      Can confirm, a breeder friend of mine had a Mollucan and they fit the criteria of a 2 y/o. Pretty much you have to be at home for as long as they are awake or else they go into a frenzy of screaming and plucking.

    • @traceytagg9057
      @traceytagg9057 10 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Yes with the attention and Jealousy. Mine would start screaming once my husband got home and came anywhere near me. As far as affection is concerned I have holes in 2 pair of jeans and my couch because I stopped petting it for a minute. It needs a lot of interaction. It got along with my dogs and would walk around outside with them. He now lives with my parents because we were not home enough to take care of it and were afraid someone was going to call the police thinking someone was being murdered in the house. Yes they are that loud. If you are not going to be home much this is not a pet for you. Besides the screaming from lack of attention it also starts to pull out its feathers and becomes depressed.

    Cockatoos are NOT easy to care for. They make fantastic pets, but only if you're willing to have a 4 year old for the next 50 years. They're definitely not a starter bird and don't take this guy's word for it when he says they're easy to care for.
    I've seen so, so many come through the rescue because their owner thought they would be easy to care for. Birds are highly intelligent, social creatures and you should make sure you're ready before you get one, especially cockatoos

    I work at a parrot rescue and I was dismayed over your description of the Moluccan cockatoo as a parrot that is easy to care for. These beautiful birds are very prevalent at rescues for several reasons. 1. They are prodigiously noisy at extreme volume. 2. They are very dusty birds and are very difficult to keep indoors without a sufficient air purification system. (the same goes for an African Grey on a lesser scale.) 3. They are highly intelligent and demand enormous amounts of attention. 4. As with all parrots they love to chew, particularly woodwork, so play outside the very large cage must be supervised. 5. They are very clever about freeing themselves from their cages, they love to manipulate locks and are great escape artists. 6. All parrots need a source of natural light to metabolize vitamin D. 7. They have a very big beak that can crack a walnut with ease. You will be bitten, no matter how much the bird loves you, all birds bite upon occasion. Their bite is serious as they have a very large beak capable of exerting enormous force.
    Rather than purchasing a parrot, I would like to encourage people to adopt. A Moluccan can live into her 80's with good care. Chances are she will be rehomed several times. It is far less expensive to adopt a rescue, and they are frequently already socialized and trick trained. That hand reared and fed baby you buy will love you until it reaches adolescence, then will turn on you as it naturally leaves the parents around that time to establish her own family. Bird ownership is not for everyone. These are not domestic animals, they are wild. Your parrot will bite you, that is a given. You must be willing to put the time in to train and socialize them, feed them properly, provide plenty of play and stimulation, and spend about a $1,000.00 a year in well bird care.

      I would like to have a pair of conures - not for breeding or teaching them to do tricks/talk - but rather just to watch them interact with each other and play with toys I put out for them. I have never owned conures before - mainly budgies and zebra finches. How do I find a bonded pair, and if they are bonded would they then be aggressive towards me and my husband? Also are they in the same noise league as budgies. I am at the beginning of my research and would like to be certain about the birds before I commit.

    • @traceytagg9057
      @traceytagg9057 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree with you on the African. Mine now has 3 carabiners along with its two locks because it has escaped so much and had done a lot of damage. This is not a family pet. It tends to bond with one person. Your assessment on the biting is so true. I was trying to teach mine who had never bit me to give kisses. He bit through my upper lip and I mean all the way through, needless to say he does not give kisses. What the video did not mention is males tend to be more talkative than females. I also believe just like with dogs and cat adoption is the way to go. So many times a bird will out live its owner and leave no one to take care of it.

      Too true! My mum takes care of over 60 of the large parrot/cockatoo family at a private refuge. She is totally against store bought birds as their are so many birds that end up getting dumped after their owners realise how high maintenance they really are. Unfortunately a lot of these birds bond with their owners though and will become depressed and stressed when they are dumped and will begin plucking their feathers. It’s really quite sad. As for bites her and her husband have nearly lost fingers before taking care of these birds even though they take the best of care for them and also shower them with affection. Another thing people need to be aware of is food. Don’t just feed them seed they are not meant to eat just seeds. In the wild they only get seeds at certain times of the year. They need a mix of certain fruit and veg and little amounts of nuts (like one a day tops) these birds can have problems with weight if spoilt too much!!

      @@bekeneel Um, a parrot is essentially still a wild animal. They don't have the same level of domestication that dogs and cats have. If you have an M2 and haven't been bitten yet, consider yourself lucky. When birds are hormonal, they can, and will, bite for no reason. Also, their beaks are one of the only ways they can communicate displeasure or discomfort, so they will bite if they don't like someone or something. To own a bird like a macaw or cockatoo and think you'll never get bit is just irresponsible. They will bite you and bite *hard.* That said, they are worth the trouble, but please don't make the mistake of thinking you will never get bitten.

    • @bekeneel
      @bekeneel 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thesnuggler9606 Every animal is essentially wild :) you can make a tiger just as domesticated. My parrot would only bite me if I try to catch him, otherwise rarely, or just nipping but that doesn't hurt. Smaller cockatoos seem to bite more though.

      You SHOULD NEVER get from a pet store. You think you're saving them but you're NOT!! You're just adding further money into the market, thus creating a higher demand, which breeds hundreds of thousands more of them to be put into the exact same spot.
      So even if it's harsh, saving ONE LIFE jails THOUSANDS. It's selfish to buy from a pet shop no matter the reason.

    • @michellefitzpatrick5668

      +KidsWithGuns1992 I would actually NOT recommend this if you are new to parrots. If you are new to parrots, get a baby from a breeder or a pet store. A lot of parrots that are up for adoption have a lot of problems because they are poorly socialized or because they came from abusive households. Once they have issues, it can be incredibly difficult to retrain them. More than likely, an inexperienced owner would be in way over his head.

    One important thing this video didn't mention is the lifespan of parrots. In many cases your bird can outlive you. Several of the breeds mentioned in this video can live 50+ years, and the smaller ones can live at least 20 years or more. It's a huge commitment to consider. Most birds develop emotional and physical problems if re-homed several times throughout their lives, and it's cruel to do so to an animal because you didn't do your homework or bought it on a whim. If you're not sure you want what is essentially a two-year old human for what will likely be a large portion of your life, just get a plant.

      Yes, you are right. Actually this video understates a LOT about parrot ownership, even in the smaller breeds. It is very hard to find an available avian vet in most places, as normal vet clinics don't always have an avian specialist among their staff. Also left out is the fact that most of the larger birds have an intelligence that rivals that of a human toddler. If you don't have a decent chunk of your day to devote to these birds it could lead to self-mutilation or depression. This video is a decent springboard, but there is SOOO much more to owning a parrot

    I owned two Senegal parrots, a male and a female, and they were both extremely intelligent. They didn't say a word until they knew what it meant. At one point I was away for a few days and I had a woman friend take care of them. She had the music on very loud and said she was in the kitchen yelling about something when Rudy, the male parrot, told her, "Too much noise", a phrase I often used when they were loud. They asked and answered questions. They made appropriate comments. When I cleaned their cage they would say, "that's a good idea." There are many, many other instances of the smart things they said. African greys often say words that they like for no apparent reason where my Senegals had a reason for every word they said

      A parakeet is easy to take care of, let's be honest. No need for purists here ... Nobody's a fucking elite for owning a bird in good shape... Cockatiels are also really easy to take care of, and you can even feed them when just born so they build a symbiotic relationship, the only thing it takes is a seringe and the food necessary ... It's only a time investment !
      They dont need you every second of time, since they actualy like their own personal time, they're not like big parrots and especialy cockatoos who allow them to starve if you leave them for too long.

    I am surprised that such a good sounding video by a "parrot professor" has such strangely lackluster descriptions.
    Many of the attributes assigned to a particular parrot apply to all other parrots as well, especially that first list for the budgee.
    Here is a simpler list for lack of an accurate detailed one.
    Compared to their large counterparts the small parrots are: easier to care for, cheaper, live shorter, chirp more often but harder to teach to speak human and more fragile.
    All parrots: need way more care than you think, can destroy your house, need to be given enough space and social interaction, make really loud noises.

    • @crysosisback7115
      @crysosisback7115 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tho not every of them sound the same, it depends a lot on how they sound ! Some cockatoos can actualy emit really high pitches sounds you can hear from a huge distance ( really painful sounds, by the way ), while some other do more "low sounds", not screams, but little grunts here and there, which is way easier to bear ^^ !

      You can own a single budgy or lovebird with ease, I've done so for many years and none of my birds were depressed, started featherplucking or had any other behavioural problems. Just give them loads of attention, which of course I did.

    • @hootle4641
      @hootle4641 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Actually that is accurate information. Many birds are 'single person' birds, in which, they will bond heavily with one person. If you have another bird, they may bond stronger with that bird, and be much harder for you to handle. Two birds in general are much harder to take care of than one, and there is no way to predict whether the birds will get along in the first place. Never buy a bird for the sake of your other bird unless you plan to breed them.
      Many love birds get along fine without a mate...the name love bird is a bit misleading, as they have a huge range of personalities like any bird does, and will not automatically 'hook up' with another bird. So long as you provide your bird with plenty of attention, as in, multiple hours a day out of his cage to interact with you, they don't need another bird around to be kept company. And if you can't provide that kind of time and dedication, a bird is the wrong pet to bring home.
      The video is just flat out wrong about Cockatoos though.

    I would advise anyone to do extensive research on the bird they plan to buy. This video is a real 'good news' vid, and does not tell you how much energy, money, patience and education go into having a parrot. I have an Umbrella cockatoo, and believe me: it's no picknick. Please consider this: they demolish your house, are very loud, need loads of attention nd out-of-cage time, they have moods swing (especially in breeding season), and if and when they bite it's nothing short of a horror story. You really need to educate yourself, because utlimately the victim will be the parrot and he will end up neglected, abused, and given up. They are so many cockatoos in shelters because the owners didn't know it was going to be hard work to make it work, it's deplorable. I have seen so many vids about neglected and abused birds; I cry over them every time. So please, if you do decide to have one and you have what it takes, consider adopting one. I adopted mine, and he is the best thing that ever happened to me. But then again, I solemnly vowed I was going to give him everything he needs until the day I die.

      XmenMagnetoAcolytes Breeds are varieties of the same species. For example, a Pomeranian and a Great Dane, despite their many differences, are both Canis Familiaris. They're still the same species because they can still breed and produce fertile offspring. You cannot breed a Macaw with a Budgie and produce viable, fertile offspring, this makes them different species, not different breeds.

    Please when you are ready to be a guardian, friend to a parrot please choose one from a rescue which are in most big cities. There are so many wonderful parrots whom need forever loving homes if you are ready for this and have made the big decision to be a parrot mommy or daddy then please, please always rescue. Even consider one whom has plucked their feathers as with love they will stop and the feathers will grow back.

      ...except the wild range of many birds is disappearing. There's less and less room for them in the wild as time goes on. Also in the wild there is no medicine, and there are no veterinarians. If a bird gets sick or breaks a wing it's much less likely to survive and will almost invariably suffer and die.
      There's nothing wrong with keeping a parrot as a pet as long as you understand and meet all of it's needs.

    I'm always torn between my love of seeing these birds in the wild and realising just how social they are and what huge spaces they need to really live and my own selfish desire to have one. So far I've only had budgies that I was given by someone who was sick of the noise they made. They all lived pretty long happy lives and haven't had one since but I'd consider one that wasn't wanted. I just wish that was the main advice people were getting, look for the birds that people are getting rid of, those in shelters and sanctuaries and so on but I'd put that advice out to any kind of pet.

    Cockatoos in general are extremely demanding emotionally and require a lot of attention. They also go through a screaming phase every day at around the same time, and they are extraordinarily loud. You cannot train them to stop doing this, so be prepared to deal with it.

    I had a parakeet, but unfortunately he lived with another at the pet store and was really depressed by being without him, so we bought both (lucky he was still there), only problem we had was that they where only social with each other and didn't like humans very much. one got sick and died the other probably because of depression after. so good advice if you going to have a parakeet make sure it doesn't already have an companion from the pet store.

    We had a Macaw parrot and it hated us horribly, we got her from her owners that hatched her from an egg and she absolutely loved them unconsciously and would always be saying BOB or BOBBY and that was her owner name was bob. We had to give her back because she couldn't bond with us and expect us as her new owners. She would see one of us and start screaming horribly loud that the people next door could hear her screaming. Macaws are the kind of birds that you can't pass from home to home because they will get depressed very easily like the one we had. She was fun to hear and watch but that's all we could do with her is watch her and hear her. People need to remember that some Macaws you can't get from owners that they have a very strong bond with because it will not work out. It's best to get one as a baby young so it can grow up with you and have a bond with you.

    • @CarnivalBratz101
      @CarnivalBratz101 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're just blaming the bird for it's behaviors. It could also be that the person doesn't like screamers, doesn't want to give enough attention, get annoyed with it quick, or just wanted it to show off. I had a cockatoo but he ended up dying of old age, he was a sweetheart and rarely got destructive. It depends on not just the bird, but it's owner as well.

    • @caitlingolder8010
      @caitlingolder8010 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think they're blaming the bird, they're blaming the person who made this video.
      Most Cockatoo's are ridiculously hard to take care of, and although there are some people who can deal with this most people would not be able to. However this video makes them sound like sweet little things that cause no more trouble than a Budgie would.
      Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore Cockatoo's. But imagine if somebody brought one after watching this video and expecting a bird that was easy to care for. I don't doubt that bird would end up in a rescue very soon through no fault of it's own. Somebody could ruin a birds life just because they've been giving misinformation from this video.

He's starting to mellow out slightly but he is still the loudest thing on earth and hates to be put back in his cage when I leave the house. Doesn't pluck, thankfully. I gave little presentations to my son's kindergarten class years ago and finished by telling them to never, ever buy one.

    My mom had a sulphur crested cockatoo and according to her these were the things he used to do:
    *1. They talk very much. like all they do is talk.*
    *2. They need a lot of attention all the time.*
    *3. They love to chew and destroy every wooden object they can find.*
    *4. Destroying every single button is a must.*
    *5. It is hard to keep them fed. They want to eat everything and anything.*
    *6. And u simply cannot have them with children below ten.*
    *7. They destroy sponges.*
    My mom told me she woke up in the middle of the night and saw the light turning on and off. My mom was scared and woke up my grandmother and grandfather. After some investigating they found the naughty parrot near the switch who laughed evilly when he saw them.
    So yes they are not easy to take care of.

    I get what this guy was trying to do with his video, but I can simplify: Owning a large species bird is like having a 2 year old all the time. It will never change. You are either ok with this, or you aren't. Visiting a bird rescue and understanding interactions with these birds will give you the best facts. If you visit a breeder over a rescuer remember, they make their livelihood on selling birds and sadly, not all breeders are honest. Please support your local bird rescue!

    • @jozigirl7114
      @jozigirl7114 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree - breeders usually sell you babies which are generally sweet and cuddly, but then when they go through adolescence the birds change and they will only bond with one person in the household, no matter what gender that person is. This usually leads to a lot of strife and stress in the house as the bird will act aggressively towards others in the household. Breeders will not tell you this. Seeing that they can make up to £2000 a bird. I parrot sanctuary/rescue should be your first port of call - not only to look for a suitable bird, but also to get advice. I would also strongly advise that you look after or foster a bird before committing to one.

    I have a golden blue macaw, shes great, but to give you an example of what its like to own one let me share this with you: we are a family of 4 and usually one of us is home to be with her and the dog, im the youngest in the family and studying at university so im generally home during the day. we usually make sure some one is home for her so shes entertained. we are constantly on a search for new toys and ideas to help stimulate her. recently we found out that she might have a infection in one of her air sacks, i took her to the vet and the first visit was 800 cnd (many tests were done) and the second time was 500$. they make for great pets but you have to be there for them and in exchange they will always be there for you. In all reality i usually discourage my friends from buying big birds and recommend sun conures or buggies. used to have those and if trained, they are perfect for any family

    I recently responded to this video saying that is was the most helpful video I have ever seen. Since that I acquired 2 birds one Senegal and one Eclectus. I did tons and tons and tons of research about all types of birds. I come back and watch this laughing out loud t is description of cockatoos. Everyone I have talk to that has a cockatoo, any type, has said that they made a terrible choice and wished they went with a macaw. They stay at home almost all day and entertain this bird constantly but still it needs more and more attention. These birds are almost never satisfied. If you buy one make sure you are ready to do things like bring the bird to work and just about everywhere else you go. And after doing all of this still get attacked by their viciously strong beak. Just think about switching the description of the cockatoo and macaw and then you have got it right.

    Tasmania is part of Australia. Cockatiels are quieter that the others because unlike Budgies, Galahs, Cockatoos, Ringnecks, Macaws etc, Cockatiels don’t have vocal cords , all their sounds are combinations of whistles so their ability to “speak” is quite an art.

    Also have to recommend the pionus parrots; they're unusually quiet, will sit on your shoulder all day long, yet will learn to talk. Their voice is what you traditionally hear when you hear a parrot talk on tv, the scratchy fake parrot voice. Very affectionate too. price, about $600 in the NYC area. They live about 35 to 45 years. They are dark greenish with a metallic sheen to their feathers, the kind that changes depending on the angle you look at them. Three types, white capped, blue capped, and bronze, the three different colors of feathers on their heads. BTW, if you get a young bird, feed it everything you eat. You'll save a fortune on bird food, parrots will want to share your meals so it will be easy to get them to try nearly anything you eat. I also have an african gray, but he requires much more attention than the pionus does.

    I'm not sure how they classify birds in aviculture, but knowing my fair share of taxonomy, shouldn't it be "species" and not "breeds"? Since breeds are variations of a single domestic subspecies selectively bred to accommodate particular niches in domestic lifestyle, while parrots are classified in a taxonomic order all on their own, containing various species and genre, and are technically just captive bred and not truly "domesticated", unless you count budgies and cockatiels?

    • @crysosisback7115

      It depends a lot, a lot of cockatoors can be tought how to care about themselves, even tho it's obvious you gotta give them a lot of attention.
      As of me, i have an alba, and she's pretty much used to us walking around the house, she only screams for example if you leave her too long in her cage in the morning ( she's waiting for you to open her cage so she can get out have a little walk ) or when we take her out of her cage, bring her to a tree in the living room if there's no one in the room ( she hates to notice no human is near her ) and she only have a little moment in the evening where she gets crazy, falps her wings, dance, screems with her crest up !
      They can easily learn to be self sufficient, if you learn them how to deal with it, and if they have toys to play with !
      Aside from the molluque cockatoo, where i totaly disagree with the guy saying they're easy to take care of, because they destroy pretty much everything, never get tired, and have a really strong personality ( if you're not brave enough, they overcome you easily, since they want to try to dominate a lot of aspects of how you treat them, which is really difficult to deal with ), most cockatoos aren't really hard to domesticate, they're even, in my eyes, the easiest to "manipulate" ( we can literaly pet ours, while she's on her back; YES - ON HER BACK, LIKE A BABY; touch her belly ) i can literaly feign starting to sleep under her wing, before noticing she's also starting to fall to sleep, they're wonderful creatures, and it's really HARD to not give them attention, because they have ways to always keep you interested ... or they're just coming after you running !

    • @airtylerb
      @airtylerb 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crysos Is back I agree with you 100% I just wish he didn't downplay the more difficult species, the video is aimed towards people who want to get a pet bird, but don't know which one they would like, most likely a beginner getting their first bird. Personally I believe if you want one of those more difficult species you need to have first hand experience with the bird, research the hell out of the bird, then make sure you are confident about what you're doing around the bird then go for it. With this it's almost like, this is vaguely what the birds like, if you like that, go for it.

    • @crysosisback7115
      @crysosisback7115 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      tyler beyl You got a point, still, documentation isn't the only thing you need with bird, actualy i believe the best way to "be prepared to have such a bird" is to acquire one ...When my mother brought our cockatoo home, it took me a while to even get to approach it, ( if you think about it, if they "wanted to", they could literaly tear one of your fingers , so ... erm ) and now she iteraly sits on my shoulder every day, things changed a lot ... I feel like parakeets and cockatiels are a good way to start understanding some birds behaviour, since nothing really prepares you to handle a cockatoo.

    Thank you Xanthi Merlo, your comments are a breath of fresh air after what I have just found to be an awful lot of misleading, dated tripe. Yet again, the budgerigar is misrepresented, thank you so much for mentioning Puck, the budgie with greatest ever vocabulary. The Moluccan, not a hope of even touching the surface regarding the complexities of this bird here. Parrot needs in general are complex, diet, housing, stimulation, the very many household dangers for a pet bird, and so much more.

    The blue & gold macaw is NOT the largest parrot (or macaw), the hyacinth is. Also, the smallest parrot is not the 'parakeet' (a general term, but is rather the 'budgerigar' (a "type" of parakeet).

    • @RyanSultana
      @RyanSultana 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Parakeets and Budgerigars are the same thing, named differently in different places. There are two breeds of parakeets, one small (normal/wild-type) and one large (show variety)

    • @SunConureDad
      @SunConureDad 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have to disagree. Budgerigars are a 'type' of parakeet. There is a distinction. For example, many different types of conures are classified as parakeets and you also have IRNs. The classification is important as assuming that a parakeet refers to a budgie is not the same as referring to a budgie as a type of parakeet.

    • @RyanSultana

    • @jiwonh.1216
      @jiwonh.1216 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Christian Newby no the parrot with the most diverse vocabulary is an African Grey. I'm not exactly sure on what you mean by parakeet (I'm guessing you're talking about budgies). If you compare budgies to African greys, amazons, cockatoos, etc they are not known for their talking ability. If you were talking about the parakeets being part of the group of five best talkers, you might have meant indian ringneck parakeets. Those guys are excellent talkers. Budgies are also excellent talkers but not as great as the others.

      Actualy, budgies CAN learn a lot of words, but it's not natural for them to learn that much, it needs a lot of practice to teach them like that ... African greys are still ahead, some actualy mastered more than 3500 words ! It's only like that because you can't keep African Grey from talking, they're literaly words sponges, they can't stop talking sometimes ! We had a parakeet who was able to talk quite a lot, she sadly died a few months ago, the thing that always surprised me, is how clear she was able to make her word sound !

    They can be left alone, sure. You'll likely end up with a plucked cockatoo who is ill behaved.
    That's a super irresponsible thing to say for people looking to add a Cockatoo to their family. Comments like that contribute to the amount of cockatoos in rescue or on craigslist.

    As a general rule all parrots require huge responsibility on the part of their human caretakers and companions. It is like caring for a human toddler for the rest of it’s life and yours. parrots especially the larger species live a very longer time. They may even outlive you, so you should make arrangements in your will for their future care with relatives or someone you trust to take on the responsibility.
