It's such an honour and pleasure to be able to live in this country and to be a first time home owner. Watching it now in hindsight, I absolutely did not express that enough. Videos like this have a humbling way of teaching me gratitude. THANK YOU ICELAND! THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING HERE ON MY JOURNEY AND HELPING TO MAKE THIS DREAM COME TRUE!!!

Energy wise you could look into geothermal heating system as super common in Iceland. They are becoming more accessible cost wise by the year in Europe and us as far as I know. There may be solution to geothermal and create electricity for small consumers too.

You can try dark shades wood varnish insted of the paint. In that case you can see wood texture, and it looks coller then orange wood. I am sure Byko have few variations of warnish color. You allways can go darker, make a darker varnish coat over lighter.

    • @sophiablum1436
      @sophiablum1436 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I was thinking that too! Just staining the wood should make it darker and less orange, no?

be careful while painting wooden varnished paneling. Currently, I'm painting just small parts of it in 2 rooms, including big 4 wing doors and i'm telling you it's a nightmare, the paint (special paint for those purposes, not some cheap random one) just won't cover the wood properly, 3-4 layers in and it's still ugly (painting it white), so it's very expensive, lots of work and frustration and no guarantee that even 5 layers will be enough for a nice effect without watery paint patches.

Fantastic that you want to plant 1 million trees :) I noticed that you're planting non-native trees however. It would be great for Iceland's awesome animals if you could plant native Icelandic trees (Birch, Rowan, Aspen). Keep up the good work :)

Sorelle, if you and Leon can stick it out for a while, seal off the areas with tarp the best you can because it's about to get MESSY. Sand down the orange wood and do a white wash on the wood the seal it with a ultra matte or dead flat sealer. It will look so light and bright and deliciously Nordic!! Ahh that would be so divine but I know it's a crap load of work.

A beautiful job on the house. But beware that the choice of lighter colours in northern countries is strategic due to the lack of light. Light colours help make the most of the little light we get.

It could be beneficial to paint the inside of the house in lighter color. It is possible to stain the wood white but you will still see the nice wood texture under. It would definitely make the interior more cosy and you will need less electricity. Even though electricity in Iceland is very cheap Led lights are a must if you want to safe energy. If the cabin has a connection to hot water then that´s the cheapest way to heat your home since hot water is also very cheap. I would definitely encourage you to plant taller trees. It takes forever in Iceland for trees to grow unless your cabin was build on an old farm land that has been fertilized for many years. Be generous also with using anything that can boost the trees growth like Trjákorn or Blákorn. Btw. you can also add some more windows or change the ones that are already existing for bigger ones, it would help a lot with getting more natural light. Winter darkness in Iceland is no joke, we live in a valley that experiences no direct sun light from mid November until the begging of February and from now we can only see it for an hour before it disappears behind another huge mountain. Each passing day is a blessing though and we get more and more light :)

Yes! Warm, calm, serene. We just created an apartment in our basement and opened all the ceilings to the rafters and painted them black, and we love it. Love your new dining space - we are all about the furniture-less movement and have our futon mattress on the floor, which we hang over a suspended rod once we are up. We also installed a removable hammock in the living room and will soon create monkey bars along one section of the rafters, so we have another reason for fun movement. Sorelle, your space is beautiful, and I hope it brings you both peace, comfort and inspiration.

Hey Sorelle! Decorative cow hides are made with the hide of animals that go to butcher for meat; there’s more demand for the meat than there is for the hides so most hides end up in land fills or being used for something else, bu taming them and giving them a use we honor that animal further, buying a new cow hide is not a bad thing but I’m glad you gave that one a new home 😊

I love the way the house is going! So exciting to see it grow and change along with you guys. If you're concerned about painting the wood of your house, you can always revarnish / refinish the wood with a tinted varnish. Either you could tint it lighter with a 30% (ish) white tint to make the orange of the wood less pronounced and more of a lighter neutral wood colour, or you could make it darker (I think something with a bit of blue / grey would help make the orange tone more neutral if you are going for that.) Or you could sand, stain the wood, and varnish clear again.

My goth heart loves your black viking church house idea, I am HERE FOR IT! The subway tile in the kitchen is lovely. Maybe I'm just a sucker for subway tile but it was definitely a good choice. Maybe more in the bathroom? I feel the same about yellow/orange (and pink) colors, I find them sort of jarring and hard to relax around. I can't wait to see what you do with such an amazing house, and no 12 months is not a long time at all.
As a Californian I have to say it is definitely lucky for you that you ended up in Iceland and not here. LA area is drowning in Covid cases and on top of that the whole state had a really long fire season- basically all of summer and fall. Here in NorCal we even had a red flag warning in December! It's been so dry and windy. It's been a hard year. I love my home but I've been eying Iceland and Northern Europe in general for somewhere to possibly move to because I'm jealous of the snow... Among other things.
Either way I can't wait to visit Iceland when it's allowed again and in the meantime I wish you success with your house adventures. Be well ❤

There are plenty of wooden houses in Iceland so just change the color. But instead of painting you should get a wood cover that is white, that way it's still obviously wood since it's a bit transparent, but you get a faint white color on the walls and ceiling (which would let the view stand out and make the house lighter and brighter).

For your orange wood, I suggest looking into "wood pickling". It's basically a very thin whitewash /stain that lightens wood while still letting the grain show through. It's a technique that gets used in other Nordic countries I believe, as well as in Newfoundland where I live. It can allow a space to look modern, traditional and bright all at once.

I so feel you, when you say that a house is always a work in progress. We have been house owners for a little over 2 years now and our family and friends are wondering why we still have not finished renovating. Well, we do almost everything by ourselves... The planning, testing, reorganizing, painting, the floors, etc.
It saves a lot of money, but takes a tremendous amount of time. More so, since we want to enjoy life and have a social life, too. (As far as it is currently safe, of course.)
And especially the finishing touches are the hardest, at least in my opinion. The first floor is done, but not quite there yet in points of decorations and personal touches. And it is so damn hard to bring together 4 different textures of wood ... from our two seperate flats before the house. I am so close to just throw all my efforts in the wind and just paint all the furniture!
But you learn and make it more your own every day. It is an exhausting, but beautiful journey, that lets you grow in yourself.

Do you know that the orangeness is probably from the type of varnish they used on the wood panelling? I know it’d be a ball ache but if you sanded the orange wood it’d come up a lot lighter, then you can use a clear varnish or even a white stain so you still have the natural wood grain but it would be a lot nicer and less orange!

With the colour of the wood you should be able to strip it of the existing finish and bleach it to make it lighter or dye it to make it darker yet show the grain. Talk to some local craftsman. For outdoor wood treatment I love the old Japanese technique called shou sugi ban.

I had to check how old this video is. Well I think it is not a good idea to paint things so dark. I would rather live at least a year there before making things even darker. The weather is dark, (also in summers) the wood is dark. Oh my... after sometime it gets on your soul, not only nerves. I lived in a dark themed apartment with wooden roof and after some time I could not take it anymore.
It is also personal taste, but still. All the best. Lovely house and landscape. Been there, Iceland I mean.
    😘🥰

There are so many beautiful changes in your home and it so inspires you to renovate things and make your own aesthetic.
It would be so interesting if you also tell about greenery. In previous stories, you mentioned that you want to grow your own food and you showed this amazing greenhouse. I hope this story will be continued. And biohacking ... it's so many interesting things around you that attract similar people. That's magical.

I love everything you do! When I see a new video drop - I am on it 💫 I love how you are approaching the house transformation and what changes you are making. It does seem like a lot of work to do but it so much worth it.
When you said more than a year ago that you’ll probably live in LA, I thought: wow, that’s weird. It does not suit her.
And yeah, then you started living in Iceland - and obviously, this country suits you 100% at this time.
Be happy! 🌈⚡️and I can’t wait to see a video about your eccentric experiment!

Your house is absolutely amazing, it's so unique and has so much character! We live in an attic apartment in one of the oldest houses of our town and could never go back to a modern, white box like apartment or house haha. Sadly our landlord does not care for this building and we're fighting him with things like mold in the window sills and a leak in our hallway ceiling :( So we're also kind of looking for something new and what you've done in your house is certainly inspring and something I bring with me as we look for a new home, thank you!
In terms of the orange wood you could just white wash it a bit? That has been done here and I love it as I also cannot stand orange-coloured wood. I think you just mix white paint with water so that it does not cover the character of the wood but just neutralises the orange a bit. I love that you dare to paint walls and ceilings black, I might want a wall to be black or dark green or grey in the future. Feels scary to go darker but I do really like the way it looks!
I am also a photographer & content creator so I can totally relate to needing ones space to also look good. It feels superficial sometimes but hey it's part of our work and being able to work from home these days is so so important!
Thank you for showing us around and letting us know what you have planned, I am so excited to follow the journey of your life there and see what happens with the house in the future as well as your trees and projects :D So exciting! Hugs from Sweden

The orange color is a combination of the wood, the preservation process, and the stain.
Removing the stain, preferably by sanding, then using a stain more to your liking would help. How much depends on the specific wood species, area of origin, and several other factors. Unfortunately, there are few builders in Iceland familiar with the issues you are trying to address.
Should we happen to meet next summer when my wife and I are in Iceland, I would be more than happy to voice my mid 60s American opinion of what would be practical to address.
