My touring bike Makeover to 'Gravel' bike

  • I once had an idea of convert my steel touring bike into a 'gravel' specific setup eg. disc wheel, gravel tyres and ready for bikepacking gears. After some research, I learnt that my current touring bike frame and wheel was not designed for disc wheels. Such a shame...I was also looking at some many groupset that I later found that I cannot afford either. So, I just have to go with what the current bike frame allows.
    This touring bike had served me on my commute and cycle touring for almost 8 years. The pannier and mudguard set-up had held up really well, but I feel like making a change, giving it a modest look! I got a pair of Clincher G-One all rounder tyres and boy, it felt so fast and responsive! I cannot wait to install the frame and saddle bag on and enjoy a 'lighter' bikepacking experience!

    As soon as the music kicks in, I'm sorta expecting Chef John to chime in about some food wishes.

    Awesome build, I am thinking about doing something similiar. You can buy adapters for disc brakes or fabricate (or have someone do it for you) and weld mounts to a frame (if it's Cr-Mo frame you can get some scrap 4130 steel and have someone MIG or TIG weld it, gas should be Argon) Usually frames like that were not designed to carry loads that occur during disc braking but a simple bracing near rear dropout and fork will work.

    Inspiring stuff mate! If you'd like to upgrade your brakes I'd recommend ( from experience ) mini V brakes. They're the same power and modulation as full Vs but use the ( 22mm ) cable pull of regular road levers so no other components needed!

      Thanks for recommending, I will consider it when it is time for an upgrade in the future. :)

    Nice! You should clamp the bike arpund the seatpost if you can, those frame tubes are thin

    Hey, if you'd like to upgrade those brakes someday, you might wanna get V-brakes. I think you went for cantilevers, because of the brake line pull travel issue (the road group set brake levers need an adapter to work with v-brakes. I have a video on this adapter on my channel, because I've been where you are and I think this could help you!

      Thanks for the tips, Maciej. Your V-brake adaptor looks very minimalist! I will swap the system at one point in the future. Cheers!

      Mini v brakes are a straight swap, they work fine on my tourer and drop bar Cinder Cone.

    I just wondered, what chainring setup that is installed on the crank?

    • @tadwenture
      @tadwenture  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi ya, this was a triple chain ring, a 3 x 7 touring groupset I believe, Shimano Deore for the derailleur.

    Hey, this is a fantastic video. You restored the bike?

    • @tadwenture
      @tadwenture  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well, you can say I 'revamped' it, by giving it a new look I supposed. It was a touring bike before this. I pretty much took out the mud guard, pannier rack and replace the tyre with a fancy one.

    • @tadwenture
      @tadwenture  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hiya, the shoe is from Quoc Cycling. The model is the "England" town version. I believe they have discontinued this line up as I cannot seem to find it in their website already.

    disc brakes are good in terms of performance, but annoying in terms of maintenance.

    • @tadwenture
      @tadwenture  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yea, I learnt that from the recent Temple build that the tolerance is tight for disc brake, even more complicated with hydraulic brake I take it. The cantilever brakes are fine too actually, but can be messy when replacing the pads.
