  • In 1968, five friends set out on a 5,000-mile road trip in a white Ford van bound for South America. They packed surfboards, skis, and climbing gear and documented the whole trip on a 16mm Bolex camera. From Ventura, California to a first ascent on Cerro Fitz Roy, with a stop for sand skiing and 31 days in an ice cave in between, Mountain of Storms not only prefigured the modern adventure movie, it serves as the mythological origin story behind the Patagonia name and philosophy, and informed a founding principle that would come to dominate these men’s lives for the next five decades: what’s important isn’t what you accomplished, it’s how you got there.
    Featuring Yvon Chouinard, Doug Tompkins, Chris Jones, Dick Dorworth, and Lito Tejada-Flores.

      Recorded in the 60s with style and extraordinary quality. Watched it several times and can’t get bored of it. The cherry on the cake is the custom made 60s psychedelic music. Master piece !

    What an absolute gem of a film. Thanks so much for sharing this. It really reminded me of The Endless Summer. The real heros of this film are the guys (or guy?) who filmed it all. Climbing Fitzroy was a remarkable achievement for sure but filming it was far more technical and without drones or helicopters or sherpas this amazing film was created. Hats off to the old skool filmmakers who were doing it before the guy who invented the Gopro was even born. ✌🏼

    Unbelievable. Complete adventure before modern technology. If you miss a meet up point you instead get dropped off at a place where you know they'll pass by on the road... And be willing to wait a week, if needed. Crazy, I remember those days before cell phones.

    FINALLY - I been looking for this film like a fool for a while, luckily you uploaded the complete film in Patagonia Chile´s account months ago so I watched it there hehe, but no idea why not in your official one.
    Now I have an excuse to watch it again, anyway, I was already going to.
    I was going to move from the city to a mountain town before the quarantine and all of this shit happened, so I guess films like these are my medicine.

    Came across this movie because I'm reading "Eco Barons," by Edward Humes (highly recommend). Chouinard and Tompkins have made the most out of their lives and followed their passions fearlessly. Fantastic film. Kudos to the film makers. 1968 - can you imagine, no GPS or weather satellites or drones. I heard the journey from Cali to Fitzroy took them about 6 months. Epic adventure.

    Incredible film. Absolutely inspiring. Thanks so much for uploading during these crazy times indoors! Loved watching the old school ski segments - I've skied a bunch of those volcanoes in Chile and they are some of the coolest features anywhere to ski. And so rad to see the climbing segments - I can't imagine questing off into the unknown sea of granite in Patagonia with no weather forecast and just a rack of pitons. Makes you really appreciate how much easier we have it with cams.

      Unfortunately there's no chance of getting them.
      I spent a couple of hours googling all the lyrics, tried searching all the songs on shazam and soundhound, googled the musicians ond the end credits and not a single song title was found anywhere. The next step is sending patagonia an email.
      I guess it's somewhat of a holy grail.

    • @322tor
      @322tor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I searched the musicians.
      Doug lubahn was a bass guitarist who played with Clear light, The Doors (on 3 albums) and Dreams. With Dreams he plays with Jeff Kent, Bob Mann, also credited in the score. Rick Marotta is more of a session drummer. He has played with many famous people, although in 1968 he was playing with a band called The Riverboat Soul Band.
      Dreams were published by Crunchy Grenola, the same as the film.
      From what i have read Doug Lubahn and Jeff Kent wrote & arranged most of their music. I guess the score was made for the film and that's it. A one off, as one would say. The best bet is a release from the owner and publisher of this documentry, i see this being a mission even harder than the climb of Fitz Roy itself.
      Dreams seem to go into jazz, instead of the psychedelic rock of this soundtrack, but the song: Dreams - 15 Miles to Provo (1970), may be a song they wrote in this period, which is quite sublime
