  • Heraldo Rial is the eighty-year-old cattle rancher in charge of one thousand hectares of Patagonian wilderness. He is one of the last 'gauchos': proud, self-reliant cowboys who have lived off the land for generations. But with civilisation encroaching, the gauchos' way of life is dying out, and Rial has a lot of wisdom to impart as he prepares for what could be his last winter in the mountains.

Modernity has robbed us of so much. The constant march of progressivism to whatever is “next” has robbed us of meaning and any transcendent value or way of being. Much respect to these men for holding fast to tradition and their way of being that gives their lives the meaning we all need. And respect to y’all for making this documentary. Well done.

Many people want modernity, just like you want to comment on the Internet, but want other people to keep following older ways. This is pseudo- intellectual pap.

“One cannot think, one has to live life with the absence of thinking” “one says today I will go here and you go there”. Working hard physically, having responsibilities, a purpose is key to mental health. Being in nature, feeling the heat feeling the cold, working in the rain are all part of a healthy lifestyle. There is nothing to gain from feeling comfortable. A physically tired body with a clear mind is good for the soul. He says he’s knows he’s going to die and doesn’t seemed concerned in the how, he says they will someday find his body or not. This is a healthy prospective on life.

A breath of life, Gauchos, Cowboys, people working hard with animals out there, exposed to the elements. It's an attitude, a way of life in search of freedom. My respects to all of them forever and hoping there is always one of us wanting to do the effort, what it takes to live the life we want. I''ve grew up in cities, but fortunately I spent my holidays in different farms in the great Pampas of Argentina, then my job took me to Patagonia (Argentine and Chilean), later to South Dakota, Texas, the sheep country in Russia, Spain and I met of these people, all Gauchos, all free. Thanks to the producers of this film, you captured the soul and this work is worth to be shared, seen everywhere and enjoyed. My respects to y'all - Talvez cada dia haya menos Gauchos en los campos, pero vivamos con esa actitud donde nos toque vivir.

Gauchos are everywhere in the Southern tip. From Brazil’s southern states ( Rio Grande do Sul anos Santa Catarina States ) , through the Argentinian’s Prairies ( Pampas ) , Uruguay , and Chile’s Southern Patagonia Region.
From the wide berth of regions , there are a few commonalities amongst different types of Gauchos …
    1. They all live off the horse’s back.
    2. Most of them are in herding livestock , whether it is cattle, Sheep.
    3. Meat , dry or fresh is a staple.
    4. Most , but not all , sip mate infusions.
    5. Loose, warm and comfortable fitting clothes. Lots of wool, leather.
    6. They outdoor people while tending the herd.

My father worked in Argentina in the early 90’s, he would fly into Buenos Aires, stay right on the outskirts and then they would drive several hours all the way to the tip of Tierra del Fuego. I was going, 10-11 years old. His last year there, he got introduced to a group of Gauchos that lived somewhere in the mountains, he created a bond with them during that time. His last 2 trips to the country, he shipped back tons of books, drawing pads, pencils, pens, toys, clothes, you name it. He spent several thousand dollars doing so. It became a big deal, the government took note of it, and wrote him a letter we still have framed.
When he got back to his hotel, his last before departure, he walked in and on the floor was two bags, sat nicely on the floor. Inside sat two full length Puma skins, each with a good sized arrowhead inside which he presumed they either killed or skinned them with. Underneath his pillow, was the feather of what I believe was a falcon.
He has some UNREAL pictures from that period. He sheared sheep with them, slept in the open by the fires, rode horses, etc.

@@facundos2087 just a little Correction, the majority of gauchos in Chile are mestizos or natives who integrated into the small towns, many of the new guachos (those after 1900) are Europeans who integrated into this already existing culture. the word Gaucho is quite new.
In the viceregal era, the word gaucho or gauchesco has been used with a varied meaning, with reference both to the inhabitants of the rural areas of a large part of the Southern Cone, particularly the Southern Cone on its slope east of the Andes, to a form of culture, in the early times it was used to designate a type of inhabitant of the Eastern Sierras of the Banda Oriental, called “no man's lands”, not only of the Pampas plain, it was also used then in what is now Río Grande del Sur, Entre Ríos, Misiones, part of Corrientes and the borders between the Spanish and Portuguese dominions. The “gauchos” and their ancestors the “gauderios” and “changadores” managed to survive by sharing and mixing with the Guenoas and Guaraníes and other native peoples, with the natural resources of the area, and especially, with the abundant wild cattle that had reproduced in the area. the grasslands of these territories. Originally the words vagabundo or vagamundo, changador, outlaw, and later, gauderíos, were used for this "maroon" and multiethnic social group. The majority of Patagonian Gauchos are of mixed origin, where there is a lot of emphasis on parts of the Mapuche, Gününa küne, and Aonikenk culture. The Patagonian gauchos, unlike the traditional Rancheros, never had conflict with the purely native peoples.

This is awesome. I participated in a 3 month wilderness school in this area in 2006 and years later lived in Aysen for 3 years. I'd have to say I met many gauchos that lived in the backcountry year round, he isn't the only one.

From what I read, Gauchos have been in Patagonia for 300 years. That's not ancient. Not minimizing anything or disrespecting the way of life, but whoever titled this video is overstating it. I love this way of life away from many people and living with the cycles of nature. The older man looks satisfied and at peace.

You are wrong, Patagonia was inhabited by indigenous Americans, of the Tehuelche ethnic group and other ethnic groups. Roca, an Argentine general, annexed them to the Patagonian region to Argentina at the end of the 1800s, therefore, that culture did not exist since it is originally from the central Argentine region, when the Patagonian region began to be populated, a few years ago, the Chileans found a narrow culture in which they could adapt, it is not easy to eliminate indigenous culture

@@aknsmar2768 No actually you are wrong. Your single source is incorrect. There are quite a few things incorrect in this video. Like the last comment that there arent anymore guachos where there are many and actually there are more videos on yt alone about them. There are a great many inaccuracies because they make the comments to include all where they should have just made it about themselves and who they know because it is not fact when you fan out farther.
