The Funk Brothers never miss. All of the covers that they do are incredible. The late great Bob Babbit on Bass. This was excellent. But my favorite rendition of this song is now and always will be the Beatles.
I never knew how great the funk brothers were-born in 57 it took me until now to realize what motown and funk brothers meant to music history- before i die i want to visit motown in detroit
@OceanicLoveLetters the first time i watched this i cried like a baby you could tell these guys loved each other, and he was so happy to be back in the old studio playing with his boys.
i strongly disagree about Me'shell Ndegeocello's vocals, on this. though she doesn't belt it out, to me, she displays a pitch perfect display of restraint & soulfulness, which captures the true beauty of this song! her vocals on this song, is to me, the best vocal interpretation of all the songs, on this movie!
I am in complete agreement. this has become my favorite version of this song and my favorite song from the movie. there is an obscure version with cher and greg allman worth mentioning... and a kingston interpretation by Derrick Harriot to hear as well... i did not read the negative review that is refereed to, but i am glad bobby picked up on it and set the record straight... damn straight!!!
@@elsipotepiedra I think her vocals are fine, 4/5, and overall this might be the best version because of how good the band sounds. I prefer Percy Sledge's lead vocals, but what ruins both Percy's take and the original a bit for me are the backing vocals, they are waay better in this version.
Also...IVE seen MOST of MOTOWN MOVIES etc...Really had NO IDEA this one was different...bet lots people not " hio" this is not another one but A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE...WONDERFUL!!...James son talking bout that one finger...prayer still being n room...WOW... BOOTSY in his purple...that " split" 😁😅🤣😂 THIS IS A MUST SEE....JUST WHEN YA THINK SAW RVERY MOTOWN MOVIE...WATCH THIS!!!❤
@Gagagrr That's the key to the sound, 2 drummers, percussionist, 3 guitars, bass, keys, backup singers, then you put the strings on top and it's a Soul Symphony! Each player is very skilled, but with this music they only have to focus on one simple part at a time, so they can do it with perfection.
What yall don't understand is it shouldn't matter who singing it cause the documentary is about the band known as THE FUNK BROTHERS so who cares whose singing it .
good thing that tambourine player had that sheet music. Nah, I'm just playin'. This is an amazing performance by everyone and an amazing documentary--everyone should watch the whole thing! I just thought that was funny.
Great job on a classic song, but part of the success is because of the saxes, which don't appear in the video. I saw the documentary, which also has no footage or mention of the sax players. I guess they were never part of The Funk Brothers - too bad!
.shes tbe reason I love this version. Speaks to my soul..she feels it..to each his own..but to me everything about the way she sings is coming from a place shes lived. Its not fake. Again thats my opinion and we are all free to have one. Some people may not feel it the same way. And thats the beauty of music
It's great, but I like the acoustic piano on Smokey's version better; the piano keyboard part is a little too electronic sounding here and not as bluesy as the original 45 version. The Funk Brothers are legends as far as I'm concerned, and I also am along time fan of Me'shell, who is a pure musician and artist,
I agree Steven! It's amazing how much better an acoustic piano sounds than a digital piano. Interestingly enough, both the digital piano on this version and the acoustic piano on Smokey's version are played by Joe Hunter, who was the original bandleader and keyboardist of The Funk Brothers (the best band ever).
Pefection, apart from the lead vocals, don't rate Me'shell Ndegeocello's version of this at all. She can sing OK but, IMO she doesn't give it the soulful power it needs.
Why do vocalists often feel the need to butcher the timing and rhythm of the lyrics? Does Meshell really think that Smokey got it wrong? Its a distraction and disrespectful to the composer, listener and other musicians, especially in this instance. If she had sung it as it was meant to be sung this performance would be a masterpiece. What a shame.
20 years later and this is still my favorite version of this song ❤️
Mine too
Sooo feel. It really should have millions of views with these idiots that say great music doesn’t still exist.
The Funk Brothers never miss. All of the covers that they do are incredible. The late great Bob Babbit on Bass. This was excellent. But my favorite rendition of this song is now and always will be the Beatles.
that guy on the keyboard looks really happy to be there
That's Joe Hunter. He was the original bandleader of The Funk Brothers. In 1964, he was replaced by Earl Van Dyke as bandleader and keyboard player.

The piano player really digging that beat
Wow I know you really got a hold on me I can’t stop listening to this song
Still watching in 2020 because her vocals are so beautiful. Perfect pitch! So soothing.
man, what a blessing!!!! what a blessing!!!!

3 years late, but She nails it. With the OG Funk Brothers

this adds a whole level of smooth to a classic
❤❤❤❤❤ the best period !
Another great voice from our MoTown. Saw her on PBS history of Motown. She does this song soooo great.
Thanks for sharing this with us.
should have done a mike chech before they started playing. sounds like they turned her up little too late.
I love being born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Taught me things about life that I still carry with me to this day....what a good upbringing...
that'd be heaven! I have it at home but my player is broken.. I love this doc more than any other!!
Fantastic song from a fantastic film!
Best documentary ever
I always loved this version. Good job

these guys look so happy to be back together and playing in their studio.
There is no other music 🎶 on my list just ❤️ this music 🎼 the Funk Brothers

this song by meshell is absolutely the best song on "standing in the shadows...!!!"
this song is such a beautifull song! waauw:)

Hats off to the original Smokey Robinson. Very good rendition.
I love this song very much. Suberb!!
love this version of this song!! i really love this song and i want learn it on bass.
Love this version and John Legends/Roots version of I Can't Write Left Handed.
...this music makes you feel alive!
Piano rhythm is great, hats off to the composer Smokey Robinson
I love this!!!!! No discussion!!
I have it on DVD it's worth buying....
Awesome
Meshell has one helluva powerhouse backing her up there, Carla Benson. What a voice.
Best of the best
Gr8 !
Who are the backup singers?
Makes you feel it don't she?
CLASS
Great job on a classic song, but part of the success is because of the saxes, which don't appear in the video. I saw the documentary, which also has no footage or mention of the sax players. I guess they were never part of The Funk Brothers - too bad!
There were two sax players on the original Smokey Robinson version; Hank Cosby on tenor, and Andrew "Mike" Terry on baritone.
who's the lady back-up singer on this?
@phillydisco Beeeeautiful.
Wheres the brass ?
Who is on piano please?
Joe Hunter.
its awesome that the back up singer has more range to cover smokey's voice then the woman singing. thats poor planning
@rayhertford I agree...everything is stellar, but I dont like Meshells interpretation of the timing
