GM unleashes LT1 Hell on the Pony Car scene in 1993

  • There was a huge buzz back in 1993 with the new 5.7 liter 6-speed LT1 Camaro Z28 hitting the streets... not only were they smoking 5.0 Mustangs on the street, they were dominating the tracks as well. The LT1 powered F-Body took America by storm upon arrival, the Fox-Body platformed 5.0 Mustang as well as Ford's top dog '93 offerings, the beloved SVT Cobra, could not reel in the Camaro Z28. 1994 and 1995 were disappointing for the Mustang GT as well as SVT Cobra. Not until the following year, 1996, would Ford finally produce a Mustang to handle the LT1 Camaro Z28. The new 305hp SVT Cobra... but GM had another ace in the sleeve with the newly optioned SS models from SLP, also producing factory 305hp, and again keeping the "best performing '90s V8 Ponycar" title.

    When these came out in late 1992, I was in love. Like they took the 3rd gen cars and smoothed out all the corners, added 30hp, and FINALLY dropped in a manual for the 5.7L. Not just any manual, but the 6-speed!! OMG...they went outside the box and hit a homerun! Broke acceleration, braking and handling records for the Camaro. Absolute benchmark!! Thank you Chevrolet!! :) Late...'95...the SS returned--oh geez--what a car!

      It was exciting times indeed for F-body people. The 5.0 Mustangs had a reputation of taking out 3rd Gens simply because GM offered soooooo many engine/cam/gear options with the 3rd Gens from the 245hp 5.7 automatic models and 230hp 5.0 manual 5spd and G92 models on down to the 200hp lower performance models to the lackluster 170hp L03 and LG4 weak versions which were the majority... and they had multiple injection options from TBI to TPI and had many many different cam profiles through those years.... whereas the Foxbody Mustangs had the same 5.0 engine across the board in GT or LX and auto or 5-speed and the same .444 cam, and the majority were 5-speeds. The lightweight notchback coupe models were capable of running low 14 second quarter mile times, stock and bumping the timing, lowering tire pressure could get them flirting with 13.9 times. Only a few 3rd Gen models were capable of that. The rare 1LE and B4C models and G92 equipped Tuned Port cars. The LT1 came out and really shook things up and stole the title back from Ford. It was a huge deal to have a Camaro making just shy of 300hp and a 6-speed tranny from the factory!!!
      Btw, you have one amazing and rare LT4 model!!! One of my dream cars would actually be an LT4 equipped SS or a mid '90s LT1 powered 1LE model with the factory KONI reds!!! Lol.

    I'm trying not to be bias because my favorite car is the foxbody Mustang but I would love to have an LT1 Camaro. Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords published an article several years back that started, and I quote, "LT1 and LS1 owners have become boastful braggarts, and rightfully so. These engines are monsters from the factory and adding a head and cam package can easily push them over the 500 hp mark". It was a good and truthful article

I went 13.8 in my 96 z28 with cold air and cat back exhaust and drag radials. 13.5 in my 02 z28 with the same mods except dr's. I now currently have a beautifully kept red 95 z28 m6 that is my weekend cruiser.

    • @nedaCFilms
      @nedaCFilms  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They were pretty close actually. HotRod magazine managed a 13.4 out of a stock '93 Cobra with a set of slicks. Very impressive for 1993. The LT1 was a superior engine though. Once you open up the restrictive exhaust and intake tract (cold air) on an LT1 the full potential is exposed and they will put down their advertised crank hp to the wheels which was damn impressive for that era. The #3rdGen & #4thGen #Fbody Camaro/Firebird was just a superior road racing platform/chassis compared to the Mustang. The handling & braking was a generation ahead of the Mustang. Better overall suspension geometry and braking components. I love them equally though. Asking me to choose between the Camaro/Firebird and Mustang/Capri is like having me choose which one of my kids I love more lol.

    Yeah, those numbers are right in line... back in 2001, Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords magazine tested a 2001 Camaro Z28 against the new 2001 Mustang Bullitt, and they ran a 12.9 with the LS1 Camaro... they were blown away, lol. The LT1 cars are usually about a full second slower. The LT1 powered F-body average 1/4 times were between 13.8 and 14.2, with the newer 96-97 models outperfoming the earlier 93-95 models.

    • @irocvert8728
      @irocvert8728 ปีที่แล้ว

      The LT1 got quicker by 1997. Was up to 285hp and the SS was up to 310hp.
      An LT1 SS was a hair quicker than a 1998 LS1 Z28 and the 1998 SS with the LS1 was only 10 more hp than the 1997 LT1 SS… only 2 tenths quicker
      The LS1s were mid 13s cars per all the tests at the time… not crazy faster than the LTs
      12.9 must have had some bolt ons and a tune…. The 6th Gen with 455hp were only running 12.1 stock. I don’t think the LS1s stock were that close to the 6th Gen SS

But the extra time SVT had to develop the '03 Cobra paid off. That car is badass and one of the best looking cars, in my opinion, to ever be released to the public.

    Wow that had some great shots! Would've loved to have seen this video back then. I still clearly remember when these cars came out. It's funny because back then the general public learned that the Z28 had the Corvette LT1 yet since 1987 the IROC-Z and Z28 also could also have the Corvette (L98) engine, just wasn't officially called L98 in the Camaro and lacked aluminum heads. The 93-97 LT1 Z28/Formula/Trans Am made such a memorable impression on people that they continued calling the LS1 in the '98-02 cars LT1. Back when I used to go to car shows, most people would look at my 02 Firehawk and ask "does that have the LT1?" hahaha

  • @nedaCFilms

    The LT1 F-Bodies absolutely performed better than the previous generation TPI engines... just as the LS1 absolutely performs better than the previous LT1 engines... but to say, "LT1's look better" is complete opinion and personal taste.

    Absolutely the LT1 has it's place... man, they were a huge deal back in the mid-'90s. They absolutely stole the title from the Mustang for "best bang for the buck". A base model LT1 Z28 with the 6-speed killed the Mustang GT as well as take out the prestigious 1993 SVT Cobra model. The LT1 ruled in "their" day.

They gave out all kinds of free stuff, they feed you, and let you compare the Z28 to a 4 cylinder Mystang you could drive th both and compare the power difference. I never understood why they used the 4 cylinder Mustang instead of a LX 5.0 trunk car. The Z still would have beat it!

      craig howard The 1993 SVT Cobra was a competitive (driver's race really) both the LT1 Camaro/Firebird and SVT Cobra models could run high 13's and one of the publications back then threw a set of slicks on the '93 Cobra and ran 13.4 which was a damn good time for 1993. The GT40 Cobra had loads of potential they were opened up to their full potential, just as the LT1, but the LT1 actually had more potential when you opened up the intake and exhaust. The LT1 heads flowed better than GT40 heads. The GT40 flowed 140cc vs the LT1 170cc, and weight wasn't as big a deal as many people think, the Camaro only weighed around 100lbs. more than the Cobra.

      CalypsoNotch408 Oh yes, gotta love the 4V DOHC and LS1, these motors really raised the bar. You have a Calypso Coupe? I have a Calypso LX Coupe project that I'm messing with. BTW, how many Calypso Notchbacks were produced anyway?

    • @AdmiralRustyShackleford
      @AdmiralRustyShackleford 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +nedaCFilms / Mustang-Town The 93 Cobra had a crap cam, meant more for low end than top. With a better cam grind, the GT40 302 has much more potential bone stock. Also why does it say the 94-95 Cobras were disappointing? What about the 95 Cobra R? Those could easily smoke an LT1, even the 96 SS. Those were about as fast as an LS1 Camaro too, that 351 had tons of torque.

    • @nedaCFilms
      @nedaCFilms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      snakesonaplane2 The 1995 Cobra R were amazing! Absolutely amazing cars, and actually in my top 3 dream cars list, lol, but when was the last time you saw a '95 Cobra R pull up beside an LT1 F-body at a stoplight, lol. You had to have SCCA/IMSA license to purchase one and prices were outrageous. They were purpose built for showroom stock road racing.

    • @AdmiralRustyShackleford
      @AdmiralRustyShackleford 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      nedaCFilms / Mustang-Town But it's not difficult to build a 351 or a 302-based stroker putting out 300hp, actually 300hp at the wheels is easy nowadays.

    Thinking of getting one of these; found one in nice shape for $4k. I've only owned German and Japanese cars my whole life; I know the performance parts for these cars are much cheaper, but is it a pain in the dick to wrench on like the imports?

  • @nedaCFilms
    @nedaCFilms  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Variables like weather, humidity, etc, effects performance day to day on the same track. I have never seen a bone stock LT1 crack 12 second 1/4 miles, and I have seen LS1 cars do it over and over again. I have an article on my website of Muscle Mustang and Fast Fords magazine testing an LS1 Camaro Z28 against their (new at the time) Bullitt Mustang, and they were shocked when the LS1 ran a 12.88 time, stock... and I don't think "bias" can be called on the Mustang guys that tested it, lol.

  • @nedaCFilms
    @nedaCFilms  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, my Teachers always sent notes home to my parents saying I was a clown...lol, sounds like you have a pretty sweet and nasty LT1. I think that dollar for dollar the LT1 is the best bang for the buck, but I know for a fact that in "stock" form (which is what I thought we were talking about) they fall just a little short to the LS1 in performance and hp-output. Those LS1 engines are just freaks man.

    I have every timeslip of every run I have made since 1983. And the tracks measure ETs in hundreths of a second, not tenths. i remember when it was that cheap, i was in HS. i drove a car that got 8mpg and no one cared. i spend $30 per week on gas (a little over 2 tanks/week). i made around $600 a month and had money to blow on whatever i wanted (usualy my choice of junkyard cars i'd beat up and send back to the JY in a month or 2 just to buy anther). up until 6 months ago (downsized) i made that in a week and never had that kinda money left over to spend. my how things have changed. at least i still have my AMX.

    I'm talking "advertised crank hp"... 275hp for the early models, and 285hp for the lateer models... hence the "almost". Actually the 1993-95 models dyno'd 230-240hp at the wheels and the 1996-97 dyno'd more. I have real world, rear wheel dyno figures of a '93 model in one of my videos on here.

    I was a teenager in the 80s also and to me the 80' and 50's were the best decades. But, an IROC Z is no comparison to an LT1 or LT4 F body. 93-97 LT1's look better, handle better, get better fuel economy and runs circles around an IROC. I owned a stock '93 TA that turned a 13.55 straight off the showroom floor. Just saying.

    LOL...kid I have been building and racing LT1s and LS1's for years now. I know what they are capable of and I know what they do. I have had stock LT1s outrun stock LS1s in the quarter mile. I owned a stock LT1 speed density TA WS9 that was stock down to the paper filter with 2.73s and a 700 r4 auto that turned a 13.55 quarter mile. I owned a stock 99 SS LS1 that would only turn a 13.82 at the same track. I have owned around 40+ of them, from LE3 LT1s to blown LS1s with all work done myself.

    They didn't make the '02 Cobra because the '99 model was a complete disappointment and Ford had a "performance recall" on the 99 Cobra (hence the terms "pre-fixed and fixed 99 Cobras") because not only did they get smoked by the LS!, they also couldn't beat the previous generation LT1 cars. For 2001 Ford changed the exhaust, intake and computer tunes (also reports of combustion enhancements) and produced 40hp more than the "pre-fixed 99 Cobras... the 01 Cobra was no joke, and 03 even better!

  • @DraikonZ3
    @DraikonZ3 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    With LT4 intake and LT4 heads and a hot cam you can make an LT1 run just as fast as an LS...Plus i heard LT performance parts are alot cheaper, don't know if that's true or not but thats what I heard.

    @JustinConcussion nowadays sure, but back when these cars hit the street, 5.0 guys started to get nervous. At first they were passive thinking it'd not be a big deal, but bolt on 5.0 guys were being slaughtered and suddenly the LT1 was making noise on the street. Then the ls1 came out and lt1 guys despised it lol. First time I seen an LS1 was a brand new 99 z28 while I was with my buddy in his bolt on 92 GT 5.0. he raced him and our jaws dropped at the bus links this stock camaro put on us.
