10:56 Even if somebody did, all that they'd think is that this boy in a photo looks very similar to Mikkel, that's all. Nobody think that it's him, because nobody would believe that time travel is real. And most people don't look at those photos very closely anyway. In my school there was similar gallery of classes, and everybody just went past it.

So true. We react as spectators so we all think: Why don't they saw this???!!
But in real life it's the same concerning faces from the past, It's already dificult for me to remember faces I saw a few days ago in a party...so thinking I could remember faces from the past is just impossible.
Wait... maybe I met people from the future and didn't know !!!

The conversation between Hannah and Mikkel last episode served three purposes. The plot purpose was to have them meet (and show that Hannah knew his name was Mikkel at the time). The second was to establish character: Mikkel is rational and knows how to do magic tricks (we sort of knew that anyway) and Hannah was always a fantasist. The third reason was to possibly incite Hannah into making the false allegation against Ulrich (there is only illusion, things only change when we change them...)
This is a theme in Dark, most shots serve multiple purposes.

I don't know if it's a specific (existing) play Martha is in, but it's about Greek mythology: Ariadne (and her thread) and Theseus, and the labyrinth with the Minotaur. So it's quite pertinent to this episode.

17:00: This play is an adaptation of the ancient Greek tragedy of Ariadne of Crete. King Minos tempted Theseus to get to the centre of the Labyrinth, which was guarded by the Minotaur. His daughter Ariadne was in love with Theseus and helped him through the mace. She gave him a thread of yarn so that he could find his way back out again. After that, both of them fled from Crete, bound for Theseus' home Athens, but on the way, he left her behind on Naxos.

And yes, Theseus and Ariadne are a metaphor for Jonas and Martha.

the play they're doing is Theseus and the Minotaur a story about ARiadne, the daughter of King Minos, who asks for tributes to feed his illegitimate son the half-human, half-beast minotaur, which Theseus goes to kill using a red string to guide him in and out of the labyrinth/maze where the Minotaur lives.

Nice one as uaual! All the questions are so fun to hear when you know what happens later, but of course, we must try our hardest not to spoil anything at all in the comments. So as always, i will restrict myself to general speculation that you would logically have at this point in the series, or outside explanations that enhance Dark, but are never explained in the series itself. BTW, i gotta say this again, you're very attentive and you're asking the right questions, this bodes very well for your enjoyment of the series and ours of the reaction! You're great!
6:37 I'm not shocked that Regina is worried about the situation with the hotel. That's basically her life's work, and if it all goes bust, she has to rely solely on her husband. Also, even people living in nice houses can have financial problems. We don't know what she had to invest into the hotel, how much credit she had to use from the bank. And then 7:00 she gets a letter from the screening center, probably telling her to come back for another appointment rather quickly. I don't think they would outright tell her that she has breast cancer either, but she can probably deduct that from the letter, because they wouldn't have asked her to come back. Just my guess. They don't mince their words on the telephone later either, probably because it's an urgent matter of life and death already.
About the hotel guy, he's credited as "The Stranger". Whenever a new character is introduced, the end credits will name him, even if it's just a placeholder name until we learn their identity. So in that case, look at the end credits for the interim name. BTW, the cellar is mostly referred to as the bunker. A cellar would be under the ground floor of a house, that seperated thing with benches to sit on etc. is classed as a bunker.
Jonas has received a radiation detection device and a futuristic-looking light from The Stranger, along with a marking on the cave map saying to follow the signal. As he opens the door with "Sic mundus creatus est" on it, all the lights in Winden seem to flicker on and off, as if he just caused some electromagnetic disturbance. Only his light stays on steadily.
About the latin phrase "Sic mundus creatus est", it's from the Emerald Tablet or Tabula Smaragdina, a cryptic piece of the Hermetica. The Hermetica are a collection of Egyptian-Greek wisdom texts from the 2nd century or earlier, in which a teacher - generally identified as Hermes Trismegistus ("thrice-greatest Hermes") - enlightens a disciple. The texts are the basis of Hermeticism, a religious-philosophical doctrine of revelation. But even after watching all of Dark, i am not entirely sure of the meaning of this text in regards to what is happening. It is just one of many things you can wrack your brains over when watching this show :)
The full translation of the latin text of the Tabula Smaragdina, done by Isaac Newton:
Tis true without lying, certain and most true.
That which is below is like that which is above, and that which is above is like that which is below, to do the miracles of one only thing.
And as all things have been and arose from one, by the mediation of one: So all things have their birth from this one thing by adaptation.
The Sun is its father, the moon its mother, the wind hath carried it in its belly, the earth is its nurse.
The father of all perfection in the whole world is here. Its force or power is entire if it be converted into earth.
Separate thou the earth from the fire, the subtle from the gross, sweetly with great industry.
It ascends from the earth to the heaven and again it descends to the earth and receives the force of things superior and inferior.
By this means you shall have the glory of the whole world and thereby all obscurity shall fly from you.
Its force is above all force, for it vanquishes every subtle thing and penetrates every solid thing.
So was the world created. (Sic mundus creatus est)
From this are and do come admirable adaptations where of the means is here in this.
Hence I am called Hermes Trismegistos, having the three parts of the philosophy of the whole world.
That which I have said of the operation of the Sun is accomplished and ended.
Martha plays Ariadne in the school play (also of note, the other guy on the stage, have you noticed how he had that black make-up all around his eyes?). Anyway, i think it might be good to know the the story of Ariadne and Theseus from Greek mythology:
Minos, son of Zeus and Europa, living on the island of Crete, asked his uncle Poseidon (God of the sea) to grant him a miracle in order to become king of Crete, because the succession to the throne was in question. He promised that if Poseidon made it clear that he was to become king, he would sacrifice any animal that appears from the ocean for Poseidon.
Poseidon, flattered by this idea, made a magnificient white bull emerge from the waves, a true miracle to witness, thus enabling Minos to become the king of Crete. However, Minos liked the bull so much that he sacrificed a lesser bull from his herd for Poseidon, keeping the white bull. Poseidon, upon noticing this deceit, became grim and angry, and cursed Minos' wife Pasiphaë with an irresistible urge to mate with the bull. So Pasiphaë had the inventor Daedalus construct a wooden cow with a cowhide covering, for her to hide inside and offer herself to the bull. Out of this act, she gave birth to the Minotaur (Minos-taurus): A being with features of both a man and a bull, that grew into a man-eating monster over time.
Minos wanted to have the Minotaur killed, for its existance alone was proof of his wife's misconduct. But his daughter Ariadne asked Minos to let the Minotaur live. Minos agreed, but had Daedalus create a labyrinth and banished the Minotaur there.
Minos later got word that one of his sons had died in a fight with the white bull, supposedly because King Aegeus of Athens told the son that he should test his battle skills against the bull. Minos, on a campaign of vengeance because of this, defeated the Athenians, and imposed a gruesome tribute on them: Every nine years, seven youths and maidens were to be sent into the labyrinth and devoured by the Minotaur, in order to prevent further doom for Athens.
Before the third sacrifice was supposed to happen, Theseus, son of King Aegeus, volunteered to end the cruel practice. Theseus sailed with the other youths and maidens from Athens to Crete, with a black sail on their ship, on a mission to kill the Minotaur living in the labyrinth. Theseus promised his father Aegeus to hoist a white sail upon his return, which would signal a successful mission.
Arriving on Crete, they had to surrender their weapons. But he met Minos' daughter Ariadne, and they fell madly in love. She gave him a sword and a ball of red thread, to tie one end to the entrance of the labyrinth, so he could find his way out again. After killing the Minotaur with Ariadne's sword, he indeed found his way out of the labyrinth by following Ariadne's thread. Mission sucessful, him and Ariadne left Crete together, heading back towards Athens, but first making a stop on the island of Naxos.
Now there are different accounts. Fact is, Theseus left Ariadne there and sailed on without her. But - either due to distress about his lost love, due to still being overjoyed about his killing of the Minotaur, or due to wrath of the Gods for abandoning Ariadne - he forgot to hoist the white sail on his ship. His father Aegeus, waiting at Cape Sounion for his return, saw the black sail from atop the cliff, and thought that his son had not survived. Out of sorrow, he plunged himself into the sea, which was henceforth known as the Aegean Sea.
In the play, Martha takes off her white gown, underneath is a black dress. The whole play is full of symbolism as to what's going on with her, Jonas, the caves, everything.

Finally somebody who writes longer comments than I do.
I would just like to elaborate on the double meaning of the (red) thread.
In the myth the thread is often interpreted as a symbol of Theseus life or fate since the Fates (Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos) spin, measure, and cut the thread of life or destiny of every human.
Whether or not it was originally red is not quite clear but the red thread is a common term in German language as "der rote Faden". It means that a central motive or goal is recognizable in something like a novel.
In English this is known as the golden thread and therefore when Ariadne's story is picked up by English speakers her thread is also golden.
But now for the really like really fun part. The German language uses this idiom since Goethe used it in Die Wahlverwandschaften and coincidentally (as if!) this is the novel that was discussed in Doppelleben (1x04):
„Wir hören von einer besondern Einrichtung bei der englischen Marine. Sämtliche Tauwerke der königlichen Flotte, vom stärksten bis zum schwächsten, sind dergestalt gesponnen, dass ein roter Faden durch das Ganze durchgeht, den man nicht herauswinden kann, ohne alles aufzulösen, und woran auch die kleinsten Stücke kenntlich sind, dass sie der Krone gehören.“ This basically tells about the red thread that was woven into the ropes of the British navy that could not be taken out without completly unwinding the rope; a measure against theft of their high quality ropes.
Interestingly the play Ariadne (which is written for the show) focuses more on the fact(?) that the red thread could not be cut.
But you probably might look out if either of these themes comes up in the show again.

To do a DNA test you have to have two samples that you compare with each other. There are certain cases in which the police will collect a large number of DNA samples but they only do that if they have a suspects DNA sample. In the case that the police tries to uncover the identity of a victim they test against the DNA from possible victims by collecting hair from brushes etc. But this is usually needed when the state of the body does not allow for identification. Here they have a rather easily identifiable body they can immediate eliminate the two missing children, Erik and Mikkel. Since nobody else is missing a child they probably assume that the kid must be from out of town or fear that they might also find the parents (dead or alive) or whoever is not reporting their missing child.
Now that Ulrich realized that this is most probably his brother he would still trick his way to a DNA test since those aren't as affordable as TV makes us believe.
Just to avoid further confusion about Katharina not wanting kids as a teen: When the fight between Regina and Katharina ends Regina yells basically "Sag ihnen wer ihre Mutter wirklich ist"/"Tell them who their mother really is" which is not to be confused with "Sag ihnen wer wirklich ihre Mutter ist"/"Tell them who really is their mother". There have been non native speakers who could not tell the difference and assumed Katharina was not their biological mother... bbut at least here is no indication for that. Regina is probably referring to Katharina's malevolent behaviour as a teen. In an earlier episode she mocked Regina, now we learned that she and Ulrich tied hr to a tree in the dead of night. Or doesn't she...??? Dun, dun, dun!

Hey there!!! Yeah I meant if he has suspicion the body is mads they could compare it to his DNA to see if there is a familial match. But I know that's probably not okay in this scenario. See, as a feminist (no, not toxic feminism), I don't understand why women are expected to take the man's last name. It's just so arcane, dating back to when women were seen as property rather than partners. In some Spanish cultures the couple hyphenate last names. I don't, I just think women shouldn't be expected to take their husband's name. In fact, perhaps sons should take the husband's last name, with daughters taking their mothers. Or vice versa. It's just more of the patriarchy.

    • @LibrasReact

I definitely understand where you are coming from. I actually considered hyphenating my name when I got married but I have to be honest that is only because when I got married my first name paired with my new last name is also the name of a well known celebrity. However I chose not to also because I was not a huge fan of my maiden name mostly because it was hard for people to spell and pronounce (kitty and I are Lebanese so it was an Arabic name) so yeah I have thought about things but definitely for the wrong reasons 🤣 -Liz

Traditionally, the person that moves to the other's home, takes the name. So, in rural families, if the husband moves to the wife's farm, he would assume her last name. In this case, the Tiedemanns were the local family and Aleksander was the one who moved to Winden. But yes, in the 80s, it was very uncommon for a man to take his wife's name.

Not a Spoiler! Your reactions are really fun to watch. You're doing a good job with analyzing things ;) Remember, that everything in this series makes sense even though you can feel different at the moment. Every tiny detail is important: lyrics in the songs, montage, etc. It's highly recommended that you will start to draw family trees for the characters - it may be helpful. Also, you have to remember, that you are watching this story from the perspective of the characters, that don't necessarily believe in time travel - they behave as ordinary people would probably do, facing such a big mystery (in a place of Urlich my first thought wouldn't be to do DNA test, but how it's even possible that this body is here in this condition after 33 years). They are trying to wrap their mind's around such a crazy concept. Regarding the episode itself: Regina was talking about Katharine being bully in her schooldays, which is something that Marta and Magnus probably didn't know. Another thing: this sentence on the door in a cave is from Latin. "Sic Mundus Creatus Est" - thus the world was created. The symbol on the doors is the triquetra - a symbol of infinity. Martha's play is titled "Ariadne" and it's from Greek mythology. The red cord and her changing her dress from white to black aren't accidental - it's weel build into the context of the whole sceene. In general, "Dark" plays a lot with viewers' expectations and with what we are used to from other series. BTW - do you remember the color of the pawn from Mikkel's Houdini trick from the first episode? It was yellow. Guess, who is wearing yellow and "magically" moved from one place to another in this episode? Such a small inner references are the true power of this series ;)
