The suikoden duels were intuitive, I don't find any of eiyudens to be that way.

Wait, I'm so confused. :33 you say whenever he says Perish you want to attack, but later at 3:05 you say counter and there's other examples of this too.

I was confused by this too. If you still need help, it changes once it enters the second phase of the duel. There’s some charts online for the actions as well but I think if you follow his verbal cues it should work.
