Only 3 instruments... a drum, a bass guitar and a lead, and two golden voices... and you make a heavenly song..And without synths. And so young people, so we made music in the early days

It's available on DVD so you can have it even after the Apocalypse. As far as I'm concerned, all three were at the absolute top of their game in this one. Clapton once said that the Cream era was his favorite musically.

What I love about this version is Clapton's vocals. He abandons the falsetto of the studio version and it adds so much longing to the song. You feel the alienation the character feels in this song, the envy. Clapton's delivery adds so much to the theme. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that Jack Bruce's bass sounds so huge that it can conquer the world.

Jack was actually a conservatory-trained cellist and singer. He also played piano (a requirement at Conservatories.) He was a child prodigy who won many prizes while still adolescent. He then moved into Jazz. He never saw himself as a rock or blues player and basically said that was Eric's job - he was Ornette Coleman out front. Little known fact, Jack transcribed all of Bach's cello lines for bass. (That's a lot.) He was really a musical man for all seasons. Check out 'Things We Like' for a surprisingly different Jack.

I'm so glad (no pun) that The Cream reunited once last time in '05. My two favorite tunes by The Cream : "Dance The Night Away" and "Deserted Cities of The Heart." To my mind, those two tunes are the epitome of British '60s psychedelia (and they didn't get played to death on the radio). Eternal thanks to Eric, Jack and Ginger (three of the most talented musicians ever to grace a stage). Cheers and best to all.

This reuinion concert was GOLD, man. Ever notice that Eric Clapton's voice got so much better as he got older. His earlier singing, with Bonnie and Delaney, and Derek and the Dominos , some of his early solo stuf I always thought his voice was thin and wispy.
Certainly, the best voice to come out of Derek and the D. was Bobby Whitlock, by far...But, I've really come to enjoy listening to Clapton since he 'found ' his true voice Before, I was never that much of a Clapton Fan. If I wanted to hear some real kick ass blues & R&B guitar and knock out vocals, I'd listen to Robert Cray. ;) 🤠🤗

I was there that night and what made it so great (apart from the obvious of a Cream reunion which I had waited nearly 40 years for) was that Eric took way more risks in his soloing than he does with his own gigs.

I just love the way these guys bridge the sections of this song and what a full sound out of just three instruments: Most three-piece outfits would require a slew of session players to get such a big sound on stage.

    Ginger's happy...
    Which means EVERYONE's happy!
And, given that it's live, the performance, 30 years or so after the hit-status of the original, is not only flawless, it's creative:
Bruce sings the verse, and Clapton, the chorus, as in the original...
And then, just for hoots, with the third verse/chorus, they reverse it.
With all of their drama, in their short (interrupted) life as a band, I have to say it:
If you put a gun to my head and demanded, "Who's your favorite Rock band of all time," I would have to answer, "These guys."

Cream were so ahead of their time it unbelievable... Ask most people when this was released and they will be at least 10 years too late. Cream were and still are a rock icon.

To work , the 3 person bands are always high energy. Along with with the Jimi Hendricks Experience, the Cream pioneered the3 person band concept. Baker pioneered the driving syncopation of the drums. Bruce, the rapid bass punctuation in counter point to the Lead guitar. In his youth, Clapton could play with the best of them. An extraordinary band!

Saw Jack at the hippie fest in Detroit area. He had a new album out and I was told he was just going to play his new songs. He opened with White Room. It was the Best Song I’ve ever heard live in my life. I’ll never forget how much I enjoyed this song.

  • @juliane3683

Absolutely fabulous ! Great sound from three great musicians. And power and relaxation in the vocals which I’ve never been aware of before. Jack Bruce plays the most melodic bass I have ever heard. Ginger threads it all together faultlessly. And Eric shreds it a deep Blues. I love the way Jack nods Eric in after his first vocal and only wish, Ginger had also smiled at Jack at the finish. Perhaps I should already know why those two didn’t appear to get on, but I do not, and I have now resolved to find out the history. People are people and some just don’t get on. But the power of the music they created transcends and you would like to think… Could have healed any differences. Were they reconciled before their deaths. One can only hope so.

Clapton unleashes on the guitar! That's his virtuosity! I saw him with the Stones in '89 on Little Red Rooster and at the Garden when he went off on many solos! His voice is nice but he's a guitar legend!
