Back 10 years ago I had a Stihl weed trimmer and I started to have trouble getting the cap to go back on properly. I went to the Stihl dealer to get a new cap. The dealer told me there was a recall and just gave me the new style cap.

Thanks Steve, mine was leaking, a lot . I tried a few different off the shelf o rings trying to solve the problem. I finally found that because its a bad design, it needed two o rings, not stacked but one inside the diameter of the other. Cheers from Colorado.

Thanks Steve - I'm wondering if the fuel cap issue hasn't been an issue for a lot of guys because they typically avoid putting gas with ethanol in their chainsaws. I always heard we should be using straight-up, ethanol-free gas in our small engines. Is that right?

It's only a problem if the equipment will be stored for long periods - such as snow blowers that are stored over the summer. or lawn mowers stored over the winter. The alternate in those situations is just to completely empty the equipment of fuel.

I own 13 pieces of Stihl equipment. Fortunately, most have the conventional screw cap. Some years ago one of the recall-style caps failed on one of my chainsaws. I replaced it with a cheap knockoff, no doubt because I could get three for the price of one Stihl cap. That knockoff has worked flawlessly for at least 15 years, and I have yet to need any of the others.

Thanks for the info Steve! Been a while! Since I've been here! And I know this is just a gas cap! But to me recalls should be this way! Even on cars! I don't care if a car is 30 years old a recall shouldn't expire if you still own it and you missed it the first time, or whatever! They should fix it! But that's not the way the world works! Have a great weekend!

Hate to see anyone loose their job, but, I hope who ever came up with the new gas cap got fired.
Seriously, if you were not strong enough to use the old reliable caps then you should not be using a chain saw. I completely understand switching brands for this. I have a 30 year old stihl with the same caps and O ring and I woks fine. I have a 5 year old stihl with its 3rd cap and countless o rings and it still leaks.
Dont have to worry about the gas getting old in a stihl anymore because it all leaks out.

What happens does it start to leak, i always lay my stihl equipment on its side with rhe gas and oil cap faci g up. Steve should we go to the extra trouble to use no ethanol gas when mixing, whatelse is ethanol doing to our equipment? Flash rusting or degrading the o-rings or the gaskets. I maintain my equipment pretty well and have never had to take my equipment into the dealer for repair, if I had done this I am sure they would have notified me and I could have brought the rest of the equipment in to get them to change these out.

    MS 391
    1 yr old.
After running it i had to refuel. Opened the cap and remaining gasoline boiled over like a hot rad cap.
I noticed the remaining fuel was bubbling.
Have you witnessed this before and do you know the cause?
Continued bubbling for at least 15 min.
