If you have a spare refrigerator, its nice to allow them to set in refrigeration for 3 or 4 days before going to the freezer. Rigor mortise sets in soon after death, this is just the contraction of the muscles. By allowing them to rest in refrigeration for a few days, the muscles relax, making for a more tender bird. By going to the freezer right away, the meat stays in the tense stage and can not relax. There is nothing wrong with going straight to the freezer, its just a nice extra step if you are capable of doing it. Thanks for all the great video's Jason! They are really enjoyable and we appreciate all the work you put into them for us!

I finally tried using chicken feet to make broth. You might want to show how to peel the toenails and pull the skin off of the chicken feet. It’s quite easy. Then freeze them. Works great and isn’t gross at all.

Try dehydrating the blood to make blood meal for your garden also dry the feathers then grind them up to make a feather meal for the garden.

Another great Sow the Land video. Great job and even better information. I'll repeat this here on your blog for those who ask how you feel about "HARVEsTING" animal you raised.
When it comes to our food, from a single blade of grass, to the great bison, something must die for us to sustain life. :)

@@SowtheLand growing and harvesting our food either animal or vegetable, for me I did not feel sadness for very long because I thought I had a great responsibility and privilage to grow and share what food I could produce and for me it felt like joy, not for the killing but for the good relationship of service to my food and to those who ate the food. just a thought! Blessings to your family.

You shouldn't be sad bothering your chickens. They are fulfilling their purpose. Like you said you know what they have eaten and how they were treated. They had good lives and are fulfilling their purpose of feeding your family. It would be sad if they died for no reason and were discarded. Great video as usual.

Thank-you Ivan, exactly what I was thinking. I love animals but certain ones are intended for Mankind's consumption. If your killing MORE than you can eat, for me that's a problem. If your JUST KILLING, then something's wrong with you...

Davis is finished with his 6 chickens we bought from you 😊. As we discussed with you guys, he eats a lot of chicken, since it is the only food he can eat now due to his disease. I am happy to report that he says he CAN taste a difference, and that Sow The Land chicken is better than all other chicken he has had! That is pretty high praise, lol! Thanks to the three of you for ethically raising food that he enjoyed very much!

The weights are comparable to my freedom rangers that I’ve always raised. I feed my dogs raw so they love chicken processing day not so much gizzards. I give thanks when I take their life. I feel freedom rangers have a better depth of flavor, they are more active and better foraging birds. I like darker meat and the crosses have been optimized genetically to have such breast that they have a hard time moving around with a lot of leg issues at least for me. Thanks Sow the Land for sharing I appreciate your time and effort.👩🏼‍🌾👍🐥🐣🐔❤️

My childern are all grown up and are doing this for themselves and their families.
I am a cornish cross person.. not cornish rock, but cornish cross. Think how big the cornish cross would have been had you let them go as long as the rangers. I like mine about 7-8 #'s.

Excellent set of videos over the last 3 years. Processing own chickens for the first time this weekend and have utilized various top notch TH-cam resources to get to this point. We have been gardeners, and now trying to come full circle for the regenerative agriculture concept and also to take control of what we eat. Feel like a lot of issues might be helped by “own”ing the process. Done tons of research to help autoimmune issues so speaking from a position of strength - not panic.

I used to can chicken soup by parboiling the chicken and deboning it. I would place a portion of the chicken in the bottom of the jar and top it with fresh, raw veggies. Pour chicken broth over and process. It was a quick meal for when I was super busy with other farm stuff. Great video, by the way.

I'm going to be honest, I appreciate that your titles for your videos are appropriate because I don't care to watch butchering of animals and that's just me. About 5 years ago after watching a chef take his staff from his restaurant to a place where he was going to butcher a goat and he spent all day going back and forth trying to build the courage. He had such a hard time, and after his very difficult experience he posted in front of his restaurant that no life would be taken and wasted and that if customers were not going to finish their food they had to take it. I started to ask myself if I could kill an animal to eat it and I know I can't, so why should I expect anyone else to have to do it for me. So I started eating differently and supplementing when needed. I respect and appreciate that you can, I also appreciate how difficult it must be for you after caring for them for weeks. Thank you for sharing!

We are raising red rangers. Same as the freedom, just a different hatchery. I agree about their temperment! I have a couple roosters that will peck my feet and the backs of my calves once in a while. Usually when I am later than usual w their food. But overall, we have 8breeds, 65 total chickens, and the rangers are the friendliest. We are actually keeping one of the roos for our egg flock bc he is so calm.

Thank you for the Q & A. I love how others said the chickens fulfilled their purpose of life. And I believe God made everything, and he put some of the animals on this planet for the purpose of feeding us. I love also that the vloggers I watch do the killing in a very humane way, so the animals don’t suffer. The whole process, from raising the chicks to becoming food, can be done in a very “loving” way, like another comment said, they had a wonderful life.

For us we do leave the chicken on ice for three days. Is what we notice is this makes them more tender. We have eaten a chicken the same day it was butchered and have noticed it can be tough. So that is why we do what we do.
I’ve enjoyed your meat chicken series. We to raised both freedom rangers and Cornish cross this year. I still like both breeds and will probably raise both next year again if we need the meat. Next year we’ll have two steers ready to put in the freezer so we’ll probably need the freezer space for them. Hopefully we’ll also have some wild game in the freezer as well this fall. Anyhow. Thanks for sharing. Take care.

Since we also raised chickens a number of years ago, I'll wager that you'll prefer the Freedom Ranger's taste and texture. Those birds have a more varied diet with plenty of greens. I prefer the dark meat on a bird... the white of the FR's should have a 'firmer/moister' texture, more like the dark meat. Am looking forward to your taste test comparison.

We have done CC only since then and at 8 weeks they are averaging 6.5 pounds. We tractor and ration food (12on/12off) with them too.

Doesn't do much for fast freezee filling but a few at a time works too. Next to learn to can meat!!!

Good Q and A. When you compost feathers, I'm pretty sure that you mix it into the regular compost heap and they break down. I would think you would do it with the hot compost method.
Cost per pound, the Cornish cross would probably be the better bird. Is one breed more hardy than the other? I do like seeing the freedom ranger more so than the Cornish cross. They are more appealing overall to me.

I vote for Freedom Rangers and hope you try other breeds in the future. From what I understand (which is not always correct), 95% of chicken from store is Cornish Cross. (98% of corn products we eat are Roundup ready). Diversify. I can say more. I can do more, but with the situation I am back in SoCal OC. Just glad it is cooler than you old stomping grounds. Very informative. Thanks for taking us through a Q&A and sharing your experience. It helps, especially if you are deciding on chickens to raise. You can read and research all day but when it comes down to it, field experience from someone you can trust, well, nothing like it. So, one question. What was the price per pound to raise? Or did you track that?
Be safe, be good, God bless

Great video. How long will this latest number of butchered chickens last for your family? Do you have a set amount of chicken you eat per week?

Excellent chicken haul. I'm with you I like the freedom rangers better. The Cornish X are good for fryers, but the freedom rangers I think are better for all-purpose. I've never let Cornish X go 12 weeks how much did they weigh? And wow having too many chickens for my freezer would be a problem I wouldn't mind having.
Thanks for sharing your homestead with us,
