I'm glad you mentioned the vinegar bath. In all the videos I've watched no one ever mentions it. We are getting ready to butcher 40 for our first time and I'd thought about putting a cap full of bleach into a few gallons of water and dunking the birds to help rid any bacteria. I hadn't thought of vinegar. I'll definitely be doing that. Just seems to be an extra step towards food safely since they have no preservatives.
Yay! You got to hold a duck!! But seriously, I do like the sanitary process you all use & that you put them on ice - your setup makes sense. You both are very conscientious about the raising & harvesting of your animals, that is impressive. Thank you for this video. Informative.
Last year we rented a plucker. It was great. This year we went old school and hand plucked. We had friends helping that had never butchered chickens and wanted to learn. We all thought it would be a good idea to learn the old ways first...just so we know we know how 😉
I wonder if the laying hens that have seen the setup before start thinking "please let it be the meat chickens". seeing the structure for the cones reminded of old western movie gallows.
The Rory Feek TH-cam channel lead me down this homesteading rabbit hole and I cannot get enough! You’ve got a great family and a beautiful story. I’m super grateful I stumbled upon your channel. 🙏🏽 ✌️
It looks like you guys are ready to have a great harvesting chicken day ! Love the fact that you put up sides around the shelters to help block the sun, 😊👍💕💕💕
Thanks Jason 👍 l did watch the actual butcher day on the Fit Farmers channel, just gotta say thanks to you all for shareing and inviting us into your lives. Love seeing the day to day progresses.
These videos have been very helpful. I will be processing my first meat chickens on Saturday. I would have never done this without watching your videos, along with Justin Rhodes, Holler Homestead, Lumnah Acres, and many more. Thanks for getting me to think outside of the box. By the way, my family does not think I will be able to do this. I think they are selling tickets for Saturday and taking bets.
i do not know where i thought this, but never realized you have butchered before on your homestead, always thought you learned by helping your friends with the process
We just processed our first 5 chickens a few weeks ago and have 30 more to do real soon. We hand plucked the first 5. It wasn’t too bad, but I really hope to get a plucker soon because it definitely would be a huge time saver. Thanks for sharing.
Penelope you are such a great helper. I love the picture of you plucking the chicken 🐓, you were just too much cuteness. Growing into such a beautiful girl. Keep up the good work. Just FYI have have a 6 year old granddaughter named Penelope and she loves to garden with her mom also.
Hey Jason, I know there have been several people over on the Abundant Permaculture Facebook page asking about renting out their pluckers/scalders to help cover the cost. Would you be willing to talk more about how you do it in a future video or a full video that can be shared over there? Thanks. There are a lot of questions about if you need to insure your equipment, the price you charge, liabilities, things like that.
Great video Jason! I've thought about renting out some of my equipment that only gets used occasionally. Do you have a boiler plate rental agreement that you use? Do you have any concerns about liability if a renter hurts themselves using your equipment or anything like that?
You need an outside building to use as a processing station / project area / picnic area. Nothing fancy nor huge. A 16 x 16 roof only - then run electric & water to it.
nice video. I'm raising meatbirds for my first time now. 24 of them I'll be processing by myself with no plucker hopefully its not so bad its my last time.
Jason I just though of a leanto just like the one with all the feed and tools for the day you add chicken to your freezers. when no killing is happening you use it for storage
Once you get past the sunk costs, the equipment really does pay for itself fairly quickly if you're processing more than 10 birds a year just in time alone. The biggest mistake people make is not putting a high enough value on their time. Enjoy your day tomorrow!
Hi SOW the land. Love your channel. When you have friends come over and help out I know you probably don’t pay them so do you give them butchered chickens and how many? Thank you Andre from New York.
Jason, have you considered a shed to store all your processing equipment in to keep it all together near where you use it? Just a thought from an older guy who looks at that hill as not inviting to haul stuff up and down. Thanks for the videos.
I would add plenty of fun and laughter by all. Bad for the chickens good for your family. Whether you do it yourself or buy a prepared chicken, the chicken has to die. I have no qualms over this even if I had to watch the actual killing. I am a hunter and produced countless meals from small game, deer and turkeys and they all had to die to let us have those life sustaining meals.
Yea, my daughter and I just finished butchering our “first”6 Cornish Cross ($1.00 each at TSC) took about 2 hours but we did not pluck we just skinned, just to see if we could do it.........Definitely will do again....
Lol I harvested 14 Cornish cross by myself and plucked by hand after scalding them. I’m 61 yrs old!! But if I get more than 14 next year, I’ll consider a plucker., just don’t think I can afford them!
You will see tomorrow! Well, not actually, but you'll get the gist. I wonder if anyone actually balks at taking life at the last minute? I would think not many, but most will have a shift in perspective.
Really great video!!!! i am growing 9 meat birds, you said that there will be 3 other times of processing birds. is there anyway i could come and see help and learn the next time. i live in south carolina not to far from you. please check out our channel.

I like how you went over this and you're not scrambling around for stuff. Good job.
Thank you for sharing all of this ! You make it obvious a fruitful homestead is not just a dream
It looks like you guys are ready to have a great harvesting chicken day ! Love the fact that you put up sides around the shelters to help block the sun, 😊👍💕💕💕
Penelope has become such a good helper :)
Add 1" x 24" pvc to your table legs to extend the height.

You are such a great teacher. Thank you for sharing all this info! Blessings🙏🏻💖
Good luck tomorrow. It was good that you showed the day before set up. That way if someone is new to home butchering they will know what they need.
i do not know where i thought this, but never realized you have butchered before on your homestead, always thought you learned by helping your friends with the process
terrific explanation..show and tell will never be the same..nice to see Penelope participating in the process..getting ready for some good eating.
I'm looking forward to being able to butcher some chickens of my own one day... also looking forward to watching your butchering day!!!

Nicely done 👍

Those chickens were thinking ' oh look Sow the Land is having a party' not. lol Great setup. : ) peace
Awesome rundown, Jason. It works for you and that's what matters.
This is exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks!
Also make sure you have plenty of ice.
a lot of prep work but has rewards, thx
I agree with The Duke comment- interesting video. Cheers Denise - Australia
Thanks for suggesting the turkey fryer as the soaker I was wondering if it would work
Thanks for sharing. Very nicely done as a Family. Good luck tomorrow!
Love and Hugs from Sapulpa, Oklahoma
Do what works for you..👍👍

Keep the good stuff coming thanks
Our first time to do this coming up on July 3, hopefully!
Chucks...Run for the Hills! Going to bed, looking out at the "killing cones",,ykes!
Cones make it all so much better
I’m new to this channel, thank you for the vinegar bath tip!! I’ve never heard of that, out of all the other channels I’ve seen.
Great video Jason! I've thought about renting out some of my equipment that only gets used occasionally. Do you have a boiler plate rental agreement that you use? Do you have any concerns about liability if a renter hurts themselves using your equipment or anything like that?

Love watching your vids! Great ideas

You guys are inspiring!
I was about to ask for these videos but you put it out 😆
How much do you rent out your chicken plucker out for. I have mine and have been thinking about renting mine out. Thanks.
Jason I just though of a leanto just like the one with all the feed and tools for the day you add chicken to your freezers. when no killing is happening you use it for storage
one day for sure!
Looks like it'll go well tomorrow. You left out the part where you put them in bags. : )
Once you get past the sunk costs, the equipment really does pay for itself fairly quickly if you're processing more than 10 birds a year just in time alone. The biggest mistake people make is not putting a high enough value on their time. Enjoy your day tomorrow!
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Look forward to every post. I know how much you love your animals. How do you make this process less stressful on the birds prior to the culling?
Insomnia night. Red Meat Lover channel followed by Sow the Land channel. 4in the morning and I'm wanting to light up the grill.
Fork4 Soup I watch Farmstead Meatsmith.
Yay Love watching your chicken processing videos! This has got to be my 3rd this week lol
Can you please do a video on starting chicks as in what kind of food to feed as they grow and do they need dust and grit
Could you check the link for your butchering tools, I've been unable to get it to load?
My smart phone maybe?
Hi SOW the land. Love your channel. When you have friends come over and help out I know you probably don’t pay them so do you give them butchered chickens and how many? Thank you Andre from New York.
You got em Jason!
Caught a Duck! Lol👍🏻😜😆
Thanks for sharing.
No Pluckers available but thank you for the list. This helps
pluckers are hard to come by right now. folks panic buying pluckers! Lol
What size cones do you use to pit your chickens in?
Do you have five gallon pails under the table for the "insides" to be slide into to take away for composting or burial?
In the latest video he will explain what he does with it. Pretty interesting.
Ty 🥰💐🌷
You have the butchering down to a fine art. So clean and well set out the equipment is. Should run like clockwork. Good luck tomorrow.
How do you make it available to rent? Do you just post on Craigslist or Facebook?
Awesome!!
I got a plucker, how much do you rent it out for. I would like to just get a general idea
Same here. We purchased a plucker for our first batch (made it much easier!) and was wondering the same thing.
In Canada they are 50-60 per day
Greath job...
Sorry if I missed it. What brand of plucker do you have?
ezplucker
Sow the Land thank you
Maybe a wedding for the chicken souls. LOL Great organizing. Good Luck with butchering and hope the weather is good.
Around how much does it cost to rent the plucker thx u
*ABATEDOURO DE FRANGO BOM TRABALHO AMIGO OU GOOD JOB FRIEND*
Why do you put soap in your soaker water and what kind of soap and how much?
Hey Jason is your land restricted or unrestricted?
Keep on keeping it real J. Cheers and Peace Out
How long does 30 chickens last in freezer?
If we eat one a week. 30 weeks.
@@SowtheLandlol too funny 😂

yes, one of my goals.
What do you do with the blood?
new video coming out today talking about that.
Good video Jason and who knows, maybe one day Penelope will have her wedding under those canapies... 😄
Thanks for another great video ❣️👍
You can use bed risers to lift the tables to a better height... Your backs will thank you
I haven’t finished but I know it’s good
you keep foot head nech for broth do you keep heart and liver
keep all of that
The $1600 is only for equipment, not the chickens/feed housing? How cost effective is it as opposed to having another butcher do this?

Hi the size of your land why don’t you build a kill shed then you also have storage regards from United Kingdom
All in good time! :)

So who does the actual killing? Is this done by someone else or you have to do it yourself. How does it work?

I do
I’ve looked on TH-cam but it’s kind of a taboo, everyone skips from live chicken to dead chicken. I assume you have to slit the throats with a knife.
the reason is because you can't show certain things on TH-cam. yes with a knife.
@@SowtheLand it's fair enough if you ask me, as long as you can show the technique
😯👍👍👍👌♥️♥️♥️
why not use the pig greenhouse pen at the shavings side.,,, shade, already built, save money.
too far away to hook up water and electricity.
Yay, first one here!
🎉
The chickens are so excited! Lol. Is there going to be a barbecue? 😊
Did you slaughter your duck?
