I think that Joseph was abused and neglected by his parents and that trauma wasn’t handled well by him. He had horrible parents and could only cope the only way he knew how to avoid future abuse.

I think life's hard enough without a kid having some kind of FAS from mother giving them issues mentally/physically. Then compounded by a constant upheaval in their life, deprivations and violence, its really only going to end up one way: Badly With any luck (because there's been precious little of that so far in his life), there's a lifetime ahead of them to mend, be counseled and can hopefully avoid the cycle of violence, substance abuse and ending up in correctional institutions. There's a lot of work from the state and community to break that cycle but i really hope it can be done in this case.
The child was told by his father that the house would be set aflame after fire alarms were disabled. That was a serious threat on the lives staying in the house. That child did not want to die, so he disabled the threat. Previous state interventions had failed the child and his sister.
Every relative failed the him, being passed from one bad apple to another helps no one. The Fed & St Gov/Social Services failed him. Law enforcement was unable to take a clearly dangerous & abusive man off the St. Courts were unable to keep him behind bars. & I can see 1 or 2 reports to Social Services but not 23, that's another huge failure.
I was expecting to hear that Joseph's defense would have been similar to that of a battered wife. He could reasonably fear that his father was going to murder the family by arson, so just like a battered wife who thinks she can't leave, Joseph was a troubled child who most certainly could not leave.

Yeah, many children cannot grasp that video games and cartoons are different than the real world (or all; but there might be a few that are aware of the distinction). There was a case in Norway in 1994 where a 5 year old girl was beaten to death. Two boys, aged 5 and 6, confessed to beating her, since no one ever suffered from being beaten in cartoons and the TV series they watched. It is debatable if the confession swould have held up under scrutiny, especially considering the sexual undertones to the murder that these boys would have been very young to carry out. However, I am not overly familiar with the more intricate details of the case in question.

I ran counseling groups for over 2300 violent men during a four year period in the 1990's. One thing I learned from this was the obvious fact mentioned by Dr. Grande: Children learn from their parents, the good and the bad. A big part of how abusive behavior becomes a cycle is a result of this. I hope Joseph can find a path to healthy behavior. I think his terrible act of killing his terrible father was a simple case of self-preservation in the face of his father's threat to burn down the house. Ironically, the father taught Joseph what to do. This case is complex and heart-breaking. I remember when this case happened. Thanks, Doctor, for shining your light on this.
I had a narcissistic , abusive, alcoholic father, there were many times I thought about it...never did though . I just hope that child got the help he needed.

This poor kid was in fear of his life due to overhearing his dad say he is going to burn the house down, then when the fighting between his Dad and step mum would have put him into a PTSD feeling of dread. And the poor kid thought life was like a video game and his Dad would get another life. This kid has been so wronged by society, just for being born into a non desirable family. A complete tragedy. I don't believe that determination was made. "Mental health professionals claimed that he didn't understand society's concept of right and wrong." That's not exactly saying he didn't grasp the difference itself. In any event, it was found that he did, in fact, kill his father. All things considered, ten years in juvie isn't a bad outcome. Given the violent trajectory he was on prior to the shooting, it might actually have been the best placement for him.

The kid said that he knew shooting his father was wrong. When you're brought up to hate & to use violence to solve problems, you don't think about right or wrong; you think only about revenge. I had parents like that. Their whole intent was for the children to take care of them. They hated it when children behaved like children. What they wanted was captive servants who would fulfill their adult needs.

It seems like it should be considered self defense when you are only 10, grow up seeing this level of violent and dysfunctional behavior, and hear your violent father state that he will burn the house down after removing the batteries from the smoke detectors. And you know that there is no one else to keep it from happening. I can't imagine the level of fear the kid must've experienced, and he probably felt like he had no choice. However, of course he needs treatment and help so he might have a slim chance of turning his young life around
Good evening, Dr. Grande! Joseph never had a chance and I have no sympathy for his father. The world is better off without Jeff. But ten years in a juvenile detention facility won't improve his behavior or personality after a youth of being exposed to drugs, violence and squalor. However, there are no treatment centers for kids like Joseph. Thanks for sharing.

I feel like if 1 parent has the children taken away for meth use it's not out of the question that the other parent also be tested before the kid is handed over. I can't imagine there's too many relationships where only one person is taking meth.
I quite agree. Meth use is rampant where I live and meth users almost always want to be around other meth users. They don't usually take to others outside of the scene, because of paranoia. An "outsider,non-user" could be someone with connections to law enforcement plus they bring no dope connections. This has been my observation from being part of the recovery community for several years.
Having grown up with a less intense version of that dad, I can empathize with the kid's decision. It doesn't excuse it, but I can certainly understand it. It's a long endurance run to survive in that type of environment. Karma does finally bite these people, but damn it can be a long wait for the karmic wheel to land on their number.
Absolutely. My late brother was born FASD and his whole life was .... struggle, violence, homelessness, destruction.... that's the story for over 80% FAS adults- even when they have early resources and proper guardians. Very sad, but I do not expect this child will ever have much a "successful " life experience.😢.
My sister was friends with a girl that had FAS, that was back in primary school in the early 90s. She had so many challenges because of her biological parents, but was a really sweet and nice girl. Her foster parents adopted her and she was so happy to have a family and adoptive siblings. But she was very gullible and easy to manipulate, so I'm dreading what her life has developed into later on. My sister back then was shocked how easy some nasty kids could come along and talk her into bad ideas. My sis, as a child, noticed how the girl made no difference in trust between a friend of several years and complete strangers. Horrifying to think what could happen in the lives of FAS affected people even if they are not violent themselves.
@Murphy Church my brother was very very gullible... he let some random "friends" tattoo his entire face with scribble scrabble about 5 years before his passing. He was such a handsome man .... that's an anger I still carry today 🙃.

Im a therapist and work with mostly kids. When given a diagnosis of adhd and behaviors like this I often wonder if it’s adhd or PTSD. as the symptoms can be very similar and often misdiagnosed. I hope this child gets mental health treatment. Thank you for sharing Dr. Grande!
I completely agree with you! My Grandson has suffered horrible mental and physical abuse, by my Son and his enabling wife. I finally had to call CPS when he choked him twice, in front of me, and then lwft marks from a belt beating. That poor kid didnt stand a chance from the moment he was born of a drug addicted mother. Who then deserted him. The lid always gets tbe label. My grandson has adhd, and ODD. I would guess, PTSTD as well. He is now with his mom, but she still struggles emotionally. He is in Therapy, and I'm working on getting him into a group therapy. This little boy's story is so sad. Jail is not the place for him with out intense therapy.
Joseph has wisdom beyond belief. Justice and Punishment are two different things. He’s been Punished enough. He’s not sick. Just unloved and uncared for. How many lives does a person have is too big a question for a ten year old.
I can't help but feel bad for Joseph. If he had been raised in a normal home he no doubt would have been a completely different child. He was at a disadvantage before he was ever born. I think Joseph was terrified he'd end up with his father after the split and for whatever reason he didn't want that. So in his immature mind he thought by killing his father he would automatically end up with his stepmother. He no doubt didn't think far enough ahead regarding the consequences of his actions.

Now I just hope he's not fiurther traumatized by how he's treated in juvie. Yes, hold him accountable, but anyone can see that this boy needed HELP - not to be written off and just punished. How about giving him decent counseling and psychiactric help? Juvie says they do that, but I don't believe it. and there are countless others being penalized without counseling or any other (or precious little) support.
He should not have been held criminally responsible because of his age alone but there should be intervention and therapy avaliable for children his age who committ these types of crimes instead of sending them to prison
What kid would not act like this with a father like that? I had a physically abusive father. I know what this is like. I sometimes fantasized about killing him because he was so abusive to me, my siblings, and my mother. People who have not experienced being raised by one or more abusive parents have NO idea. As far as the water district job goes, some of those districts are little more than a scam of taxpayers when you see how much money they make...and virtually recession proof job--people have to have water whether for a home or farm.

it is so weird that in some cases, a weird smell in the house would get the cps to move so fast. yet, in some cases, nothing is done even when there are stacks of reports of abuse and/or neglect.
Maybe this is simplistic, but two wrongs don’t make a right. I believe this is true, but I also believe nobody ever taught Joseph that. He was NEVER dangerous and should've never been locked up. Jail is not a place for 10 year olds, i don't care what the crime is, it ain't right. He is the actual victim here and we should all acknowledge that, i have no sympathy for his father!

The dad threatened to burn the house down with them in it... I feel like his son was scared and was trying to remedy the situation, thinking he'd injure his dad to teach him a lesson. He definitely needs to have consequences and some intense therapy. Hopefully, he can be rehabilitated and grow up to be a decent member of society. What an awful situation. I know the kid was a bully and out of control, but he was a victim, too. It seems obvious that he didn't fully comprehend the gravity of what he had done.
I could completely relate to way Joseph did what he did. I grew up in a very abusive household and I had to defend myself numerous times from my stepfather including picking up a knife to threaten him with it while he was beating me. I literally had to pick up a knife to stop my stepfather from beating me when I was only 12 years old.

I’m originally from Southern California (Orange County) and about 23 years ago, for a time I worked in Riverside county. I can tell you that although Riverside has some decent neighborhoods, there are some seedy areas! And ironically, in spite of SoCal being extremely diverse ethnically, some desert communities out there have some home grown neo-Nazi groups, whose members are most likely very poor, with various anti-social behaviors. One has a slim chance at having a secure upbringing growing up in that kind of environment with reckless, angry and addicted parents. Sounds like Joseph is definitely guilty, but I will be praying for Joseph. There still may be hope for the boy. 🙏💕

I watched the documentary on this story. My heart breaks for the son.💔 Sadly, the grandmother still doesn’t believe that her sons beliefs & extremism caused her grandson to kill his own father. She blames his mental issues only. Maybe if he wasn’t suffering so much at home, he would have had a chance. These extreme beliefs cause death & damage globally….so sad that our world can fall victim to many hateful ways. History repeats itself when we don’t learn from it.

In my country (The Netherlands) Joseph would not be punished, but helped. Dutch Law: Minimum age Article 486 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (Sv) stipulates that 'no one can be prosecuted for an offense committed before he has reached the age of twelve.' This concerns a 'legally non-rebuttable presumption of non-responsibility on the grounds of youth'. It concerns a general ground for exclusion from punishment on which the youth under the age of twelve can invoke if he is being prosecuted for a criminal offence. The Public Prosecution Service is then inadmissible in its prosecution. However, the committed offense remains punishable. Only the prosecution of a minor is excluded, not the detection of the criminal offense. Investigative powers and coercive measures can therefore be applied by the police and the judiciary against the suspect under the age of twelve. For example, they can arrest, search and interrogate the juvenile, and objects can be seized from him. The committed offense is also a signal that something is going wrong in the upbringing of the juvenile. That is why the police will always make a concern report to the advice and reporting center for domestic violence and child abuse of Safe Home. In addition, the police also register all crimes committed by under-12s in its Client Tracking System. The way 'justice' works for non adults in the USA always baffles me.

These cases make me think of batters wife syndrome. I feel like that should be extended to children. Abuse as an adult is mind fucking but as a child while your brain is still developing that would be tenfold. I don't think you can hold a 10 year old abused child responsible for something like this. Does he need some kind of intervention? Absolutely. Prison? No. Raising a violent hurting child in prison will only make things worse.
Super sad, and facts do show (the treatment of teachers, other classmates, ppl in general) that this poor kid is a danger to society. Is it possible he can get some EFFECTIVE treatment in juvi? Since his mom was doing so so so much harm to him during her pregnancy, there is a chance this kid should always be supervised. I have a neighbor and his Dad that are very similar. The 13 year old son recently shot his friend in the back of the head with a shotgun and blamed it on the deceased boy He said he shot himself in the back of the head. State investigators haven’t closed the investigation but it has been dragging on for months. The kid seems very comfortable and hasn’t been in school since he got expelled over a year ago. The boy spends most of his time turfing the neighbors property frontages with his friend and his dad as non of them have respect for anyone else’s property. They think they own the whole Road and have marauding attitudes. Like father like Son.
Let this be a reminder that somebody can torment you unbearably to the point where you at 10 years old kill somebody and then you will be held responsible for the entirety of the chaos. If this guy comes out a serial killer I wouldn't blame him one bit.

It seems like it should be considered self defense when you are only 10, grow up seeing this level of violent and dysfunctional behavior, and hear your violent father state that he will burn the house down after removing the batteries from the smoke detectors. And you know that there is no one else to keep it from happening. I can't imagine the level of fear the kid must've experienced, and he probably felt like he had no choice. However, of course he needs treatment and help so he might have a slim chance of turning his young life around

I feel like if 1 parent has the children taken away for meth use it's not out of the question that the other parent also be tested before the kid is handed over.
I can't imagine there's too many relationships where only one person is taking meth.

I quite agree. Meth use is rampant where I live and meth users almost always want to be around other meth users. They don't usually take to others outside of the scene, because of paranoia. An "outsider,non-user" could be someone with connections to law enforcement plus they bring no dope connections. This has been my observation from being part of the recovery community for several years.
Having grown up with a less intense version of that dad, I can empathize with the kid's decision. It doesn't excuse it, but I can certainly understand it. It's a long endurance run to survive in that type of environment. Karma does finally bite these people, but damn it can be a long wait for the karmic wheel to land on their number.

Absolutely. My late brother was born FASD and his whole life was .... struggle, violence, homelessness, destruction.... that's the story for over 80% FAS adults- even when they have early resources and proper guardians. Very sad, but I do not expect this child will ever have much a "successful " life experience.😢.

My sister was friends with a girl that had FAS, that was back in primary school in the early 90s. She had so many challenges because of her biological parents, but was a really sweet and nice girl. Her foster parents adopted her and she was so happy to have a family and adoptive siblings. But she was very gullible and easy to manipulate, so I'm dreading what her life has developed into later on. My sister back then was shocked how easy some nasty kids could come along and talk her into bad ideas. My sis, as a child, noticed how the girl made no difference in trust between a friend of several years and complete strangers. Horrifying to think what could happen in the lives of FAS affected people even if they are not violent themselves.
@Murphy Church my brother was very very gullible... he let some random "friends" tattoo his entire face with scribble scrabble about 5 years before his passing. He was such a handsome man .... that's an anger I still carry today 🙃.

Im a therapist and work with mostly kids. When given a diagnosis of adhd and behaviors like this I often wonder if it’s adhd or PTSD. as the symptoms can be very similar and often misdiagnosed. I hope this child gets mental health treatment. Thank you for sharing Dr. Grande!
I completely agree with you! My Grandson has suffered horrible mental and physical abuse, by my Son and his enabling wife. I finally had to call CPS when he choked him twice, in front of me, and then lwft marks from a belt beating. That poor kid didnt stand a chance from the moment he was born of a drug addicted mother. Who then deserted him. The lid always gets tbe label. My grandson has adhd, and ODD. I would guess, PTSTD as well. He is now with his mom, but she still struggles emotionally. He is in Therapy, and I'm working on getting him into a group therapy.
This little boy's story is so sad. Jail is not the place for him with out intense therapy.

Joseph has wisdom beyond belief. Justice and Punishment are two different things. He’s been Punished enough. He’s not sick. Just unloved and uncared for. How many lives does a person have is too big a question for a ten year old.
I can't help but feel bad for Joseph. If he had been raised in a normal home he no doubt would have been a completely different child. He was at a disadvantage before he was ever born. I think Joseph was terrified he'd end up with his father after the split and for whatever reason he didn't want that. So in his immature mind he thought by killing his father he would automatically end up with his stepmother. He no doubt didn't think far enough ahead regarding the consequences of his actions.
I wonder if other people have such concern for children raised in houses of communist and other authoritarian, totalitarian and murderous ideologies. Nazi is an easy go to, but Communists are just as bad. Both ideologies should be erased from humnaities future

That child was the epitome of underprivileged. There was truly no way on earth he would not end up in prison.
Now I just hope he's not fiurther traumatized by how he's treated in juvie. Yes, hold him accountable, but anyone can see that this boy needed HELP - not to be written off and just punished. How about giving him decent counseling and psychiactric help? Juvie says they do that, but I don't believe it. and there are countless others being penalized without counseling or any other (or precious little) support.

What kid would not act like this with a father like that? I had a physically abusive father. I know what this is like. I sometimes fantasized about killing him because he was so abusive to me, my siblings, and my mother. People who have not experienced being raised by one or more abusive parents have NO idea. As far as the water district job goes, some of those districts are little more than a scam of taxpayers when you see how much money they make...and virtually recession proof job--people have to have water whether for a home or farm.

it is so weird that in some cases, a weird smell in the house would get the cps to move so fast. yet, in some cases, nothing is done even when there are stacks of reports of abuse and/or neglect.

He was NEVER dangerous and should've never been locked up. Jail is not a place for 10 year olds, i don't care what the crime is, it ain't right. He is the actual victim here and we should all acknowledge that, i have no sympathy for his father!

That little boy was doomed from the womb. The effects of drugs and alcohol on a baby are devastating mentally and physically. I hope he is able to get some help and live a more stable life.
The dad threatened to burn the house down with them in it... I feel like his son was scared and was trying to remedy the situation, thinking he'd injure his dad to teach him a lesson. He definitely needs to have consequences and some intense therapy. Hopefully, he can be rehabilitated and grow up to be a decent member of society. What an awful situation. I know the kid was a bully and out of control, but he was a victim, too. It seems obvious that he didn't fully comprehend the gravity of what he had done.
I could completely relate to way Joseph did what he did. I grew up in a very abusive household and I had to defend myself numerous times from my stepfather including picking up a knife to threaten him with it while he was beating me.
I literally had to pick up a knife to stop my stepfather from beating me when I was only 12 years old.

This one is a terrifying example of the consequences of really stupid parenting. More like monstering. And home schooling, too. Oh dear. It sounds like someone was bound to take one in the head sooner or later. It kind of stood out to me Joseph saying that he shot his dad in the ear. That statement alone makes me wonder if he really understood the full reality of what he was doing. And hey you‘ve really challenged me in terms of feeling sad that this particular individual lost his…life!

I’m originally from Southern California (Orange County) and about 23 years ago, for a time I worked in Riverside county. I can tell you that although Riverside has some decent neighborhoods, there are some seedy areas! And ironically, in spite of SoCal being extremely diverse ethnically, some desert communities out there have some home grown neo-Nazi groups, whose members are most likely very poor, with various anti-social behaviors. One has a slim chance at having a secure upbringing growing up in that kind of environment with reckless, angry and addicted parents. Sounds like Joseph is definitely guilty, but I will be praying for Joseph. There still may be hope for the boy. 🙏💕

I watched the documentary on this story. My heart breaks for the son.💔 Sadly, the grandmother still doesn’t believe that her sons beliefs & extremism caused her grandson to kill his own father. She blames his mental issues only. Maybe if he wasn’t suffering so much at home, he would have had a chance. These extreme beliefs cause death & damage globally….so sad that our world can fall victim to many hateful ways. History repeats itself when we don’t learn from it.
Imagine living a household full of hate, then going to school and seeing that children get along. You’d be confused as hell as a child.

It might have been. I thought the mental hospital was the best place I ever lived. Granted that the mental hospital was better than juvenile prison.
As a rule of thumb if someone's barely made it into double digits it begs the question: how did the parents fuck up so badly they had the inclination to do it in the first place?

In my country (The Netherlands) Joseph would not be punished, but helped.
Dutch Law: Minimum age
Article 486 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (Sv) stipulates that 'no one can be prosecuted for an offense committed before he has reached the age of twelve.' This concerns a 'legally non-rebuttable presumption of non-responsibility on the grounds of youth'. It concerns a general ground for exclusion from punishment on which the youth under the age of twelve can invoke if he is being prosecuted for a criminal offence. The Public Prosecution Service is then inadmissible in its prosecution. However, the committed offense remains punishable. Only the prosecution of a minor is excluded, not the detection of the criminal offense.
Investigative powers and coercive measures can therefore be applied by the police and the judiciary against the suspect under the age of twelve. For example, they can arrest, search and interrogate the juvenile, and objects can be seized from him. The committed offense is also a signal that something is going wrong in the upbringing of the juvenile. That is why the police will always make a concern report to the advice and reporting center for domestic violence and child abuse of Safe Home. In addition, the police also register all crimes committed by under-12s in its Client Tracking System.
The way 'justice' works for non adults in the USA always baffles me.

Abuse as an adult is mind fucking but as a child while your brain is still developing that would be tenfold.

Super sad, and facts do show (the treatment of teachers, other classmates, ppl in general) that this poor kid is a danger to society. Is it possible he can get some EFFECTIVE treatment in juvi? Since his mom was doing so so so much harm to him during her pregnancy, there is a chance this kid should always be supervised. Or we will be hearing Dr G tell us about his next victims and wonder why we didn't protect other innocents while we could.
One of the few cases where I feel more sympathy for the perpetrator thank the victim.

I have a neighbor and his Dad that are very similar.
The 13 year old son recently shot his friend in the back of the head with a shotgun and blamed it on the deceased boy
He said he shot himself in the back of the head.
State investigators haven’t closed the investigation but it has been dragging on for months.
The kid seems very comfortable and hasn’t been in school since he got expelled over a year ago.
The boy spends most of his time turfing the neighbors property frontages with his friend and his dad as non of them have respect for anyone else’s property.
They think they own the whole
