    As the military and Garand himself said in ww2 ....."A clip is used to feed a magazine and the magazine feeds the gun"
    There are VERY few examples where the area a clip is held is not a magazine that feeds the rounds into line for the bolt. Even Garand, Vitali, and Bergmann called their clip holding area that actually advanced and helps feed rounds a magazine when they developed them

    • @JohnDoe-tx8eu

    • @Shadow0fd3ath24
      @Shadow0fd3ath24 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Robert Sears no they arent. Not in the least bit. You obviously didnt pay attention. An en bloc for example doesnt do what a mag does. it is a speedloading device mostly. A clip only loads a magazine, the magazine is what holds the clips and feeds the ammo using a follower

    • @KageRyuu6
      @KageRyuu6 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Shadow0fd3ath24 Half credit.
      There are two major kinds of clips as denoted in the video, the "Retaining Clip", ie those retained by the gun generally to act as a round guide/retaining device. While a "Loading Clip", ie those not retained by the gun, are as you stated nothing more than a speed loading device. As such the Moon Clip would be a "Retaining Clip" as they are held within the cylinder until unloaded.
      Now, what's the difference? Well an SKS can be loaded to full capacity without a Stripper Clip and will function normally. While an M1 Garand can only be loaded with a single round directly into the chamber without an En Bloc Clip as it does not have a built-in round guide or retaining device itself. Or in other words one is optional, while the other is essential for intended operation. This is also the case for Moon Clips which are almost universally used with rimless ammo that would otherwise not function within your typical revolver.

    It was only on the interwebs that I first saw the term 'stripper clip' for things like the item on the left. I'd been reliably informed that those were called 'chargers,' since you used them to charge the magazine. Some old stuff distinguishes 'loading'--putting a round in the chamber for possible firing--from 'charging'--putting a round in the magazine...from whence it might be loaded later.

    So for feeding systems I think we can break down as such: Belts, Magazines (1911, Luger, etc...), En bloc (My mind jumped to the term active stripper clip) (Mannlicher, Garand, etc...), and passive stripper clip (Mauser, Mosin, etc...).
    Seems to be pretty clear from there.

    The difference regarding the Hotchkiss clip is, that the Hotchkiss is feeding actively. Meaning the force to present the cartridges comes indirectly from the powder charge. The other guns got feed passively. Meaning the force to present the cartridges does not come from the power of the gun, but from a spring spun before the firing cycle.

    There's also a hybrid "maga-clip" used by a scarce Brno "Vz24-ish" .22LR training rifle I had in temporal custody for a while. Although missing, it was easy to deduce what it was from the internal parts of the feeding system. Basically it was like any 5-round .22LR magazine that was inserted from below BUT must have looked like a Steyr clip with a floor plate. Once inserted the follower went through its front and you could open the bolt and load it round by round like a normal magazine but already inserted inside the rifle.

    I vaguely remember Othais saying something like "We dont have live rounds on the set" in regards to feedback the show received surrounding C&Rsenal's safety practices. Not a Judgement (the last time I shot a rifle was in boy scouts) but I think it would be interesting to see a video about your safety practices on set and on the range. Might get some good karma with the All Powerful Algorithm too.

    Counterpoint: Everything that is holding a round is a clip. So a loaded gun is a clip as well. At least that's what video games have told me.

    I'm now kinda curious, why do we call a magazine, a magazine? I know that it has something to do with old cannon ammo storage, but how does that translate to the modern day integeral spring bullet holder?

      Military term. Place where ammo stored on a ship for example is called a Magazine.

    • @JoramTriesGaming
      @JoramTriesGaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Magazine is just "a space where ammunition is stored", i.e. a clip is not a magazine because it's only part of the storage system, whereas a *detachable* magazine performs the same functions as an internal magazine, but a clip may be used to fill either.

    • @zoiders

      Its French for store or warehouse. "magasin"

    • @adam-k

      Magazine were just storehouses originally. Comes from arabic "makhāzin". Then they started to mean store houses for ammunition, then store rooms for ammunition, than store cases for ammunition, then store metal thingies for ammunition.
      Clips are not called for magazines because they are tools to add ammunition quickly to magazines. See ammo storage were already built into the weapons and they were already called magazines.
      Then they figured out that the ammo storage could be detached from the gun. So the detachable magazine was born.
      Fun fact. Detachable magazines are often called clips. Because when soldiers transitioned from clip fed rifles to magazine fed rifles the terminology for distributing ammunition lagged. So they kept saying "give me a clip" even though they meant "give me a magazine". It is shorter which matters when bullets are flying and that was what they were used to. When they went home that is what they told their kids. So today lots of people will call magazines clips.
      Another fun fact. On social media you will find flocks of people who are especially anal about pointing out that magazines are not clips. Ignore them. They know exactly what you are talking about. They just like being pedantic.

    I've honestly thought most gun "inaccuracies" were just relics of the growing pains involved in changes to military tech and doctrine, and popularized by the generations that experienced them. Clips being the standard loading method for most firearms in the early 20th century means a lot of people were going to use it as shorthand for both clips and magazines, transitioning from revolvers to automatics resulting in awkward firing stances (mostly one handing and teacupping), and the eventual adoption of specialized vs standardized small arms requiring a lot of retronyms to differentiate rifles, as opposed to every infantryman being issued a standard "rifle"

    We have all gotten rather pedantic of late. I myself have corrected people when they called a detachable box magazine a clip. However, recently I have been going back over some of my old gun magazines and Gun Digests from back in the '60s and I see all sorts of references to magazines as clips, both by manufacturers and gun writers.
