The original script was a drama titled "$3,000", and it ended with Edward throwing Vivian out of his car back onto Hollywood Blvd. Yeah, it was dark. Then it came across Garry Marshall's desk, and he liked the concept of the story but thought it would work better as a rom-com. And thus it ended up here. :)
the opera was La Traviata(the fallen woman) about a high class courtesan(prostitute) who is ill but the love of a high class guy gives her hope and keeps her alive. Perfect for this movie!
Love this movie! The jewelry box snap on Julia’s finger was spontaneous from Richard and the response and laugh was genuine. They decided to keep this in the movie lending to its charm! “I thought the carpet didn’t match the drapes.” David!….Lmao!!!! Great review guys!
Gary Marshall actually has two cameos in the movie. The guy going through “Stallone’s trash” and the maintenance guy in front of the hotel washing the sidewalk with a hose.

The woman helping Vivian in the department store was Elinor Donahue who played the daughter Betty Anderson on ‘Father Knows Best’ with Robert Young, Jane Wyman, Billy Gray and Lauren Chapin. She was also in ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ as one of Andy’s girlfriends and and an episode of ‘Star Trek’ where she became the human host for a being called the Companion.
I love Hector Elizondo in this film. His character is such a class act, funny, and I love how he says goodbye to her. Total gentleman. On the opposite end of classy (heh), I love Laura San Giacomo's character. She's not in it much, but she makes a fantastic impact. "50 bucks, grandpa... for 75 the wife can watch." The way she says that is so funny. I can't help quoting that one, lol. And I still quote the film whenever I"m in the kitchen, drop something and it goes flying. "Slippery little suckers," lol. Favorite scene is always the shopping one, of course. Which is pretty good considering I hate shopping. But who wouldn't want to be pampered that way? Julia shoving it in those rude snobs' faces when they lose all that commission... priceless. 😄👒👗👠

Also, if I’m not mistaken, this movie was originally scripted as a drama piece and the ending was supposed to be completely different. Kinda glad they changed it. 🤭
Yeah, I had heard that also, Katie! As Jon would tell you, there's a great series on Netflix called the movies that made us. They have one about Pretty Woman ;)

If you have seen the Princess Diaries some of the actors are in that from this and there are a few scenes from this in The Princess movie. They were both directed by Gary Marshall. Love all his movies. Overboard was another one of my favorites ❤
This never gets old. I've probably seen it 500x over the years. It's one of those movies you turn it to when nothing else is on. Julia is just precious and Richard sexy AF!! Officer and a Gentleman, American Gigolo.. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 😏
@David vs. Film Blimey, I've been busted. 🤣 But in all actuality I am a big softy. I cry over everything. Hallmark commercials, animal rescue videos, Anakin asking Luke to remove his helmet so he could see him with his own eyes,... lmao!! But I still love the spooky tho!! 👻
they actually used a body double for Roberts who "hated" working out. And you should watch "Sex, Lies and Videotape" for a great Laura San Giacomo movie. And a Lotus was used because Ferrari and Porsche didn't want to be associated with prostitution.
Not that it matters to anyone but me and my man but I wanted to share that my 8 year anniversary is on Valentine's day....ahhhh😄💗 Hope you two have a great 💝day too!!!
Well I can't speak for everybody, but it matters to Marc and me! Congratulations my awesome friends in Oregon!!! That is so amazing, and I hope you guys have a love-filled Valentine's Anniversary. ❤️
Yep, she wore a vintage Valentino to the Oscars the year she won. She was stunning. A friend had a cocktail party for the Oscars and we actually gasped when she arrived in the dress. Our host laughed and said "When you make a roomful of gay men gasp, you KNOW you look good."
I am in love with yall's reactions! I've binged you tonight. Fun fact: My Mom worked for Hector Elizondo in Georgia when he was working on a film. They became fast friends and he sent us a Christmas card every year. She said he was incredibly down to earth and so funny. Anyway, carry on. (Thanks for the Saturday night entertainment!)
What a great comment, thank you so much!!! We are so happy and honored that you spent some time with our videos :) And that's a great story about your mom and Hector! I'm always happy to hear stories about when actors are good people.
Got nothing to say but hi and happy Valentine's Day. Oh, and you may get the PG-13 impression because this movie is on tv so often with the slightly racier scenes cut. Honestly it doesn't lose much when it is, the whole thing is kinda wholesome to begin with...lord I am so glad they turned the realistic ugly thing into an almost magical rom-com. Lightning in a bottle!
Wow, I can't believe Marc hasn't seen Pretty woman before! It's been shown on tv like every year for over 30 years. :D Did you know it's (loosely) based on Cinderella and My fair lady?
Thanks, Suvi! I didn't know that, but now I do. :) Yeah, I asked him and he said that he wasn't a big Julia Roberts fan then. But I told him how good it was, so we was game haha
Van Halens version of Prettty Woman was pretty cool😎🤘I hope you will do The Notebook at some point, love watching movies with you two💕 See you on the next one🍻

@@DavidvsFilm It’s very OK for what it is and it’s time. Early Steven Soderbergh directing. Kind of groundbreaking at the time. Interesting examination of how people respond to cameras pointing at them. It’s about desire and fulfillment and cheating and james spader is weird as usual.
I met Dennis the elevator guy (Patrick Richwood) in a piano bar in New York City about 5 years ago… he was absolutely lovely (and a really good singer) and we had a great conversation. As a huge fan of this movie since it first came out, it was such a thrill for me. Loved your reaction, guys!!
My mother was a horrible person, but extremely beautiful. She had the brown dress with white polka dots. I spent my childhood admiring it and dreaming of the day id wear it. Unfortunately i got fat from an illness
Garry Marshall definitely had his favorites. I’m glad you mentioned The Princess Diaries because half of the side cast in both of the Princess Diaries movies were in this movie first. And the waiter that catches the snail that Julia Roberts accidentally sent flying, he is also in both of the Princess Diaries movies with the exact same line in all three of them. He always catches some thing that’s flying through the air and says, “It happens all the time.” But two of the people at the desk at the hotel (one of which is Garry Marshall’s daughter), the waiter, the elevator man, and the funny bald shop owner guy who is more than willing to take Richard Gere‘s money all had parts in the Princess Diaries movies. A few visual themes overlapped also. Like an amazing, bright red dress with white extra long gloves (in The Princess Diaries 2). Gary Marshall definitely liked his leading ladies to have big eyes, wide smiles, and lots of self-confidence. By the way, this was my first R-rated movie that I was allowed to watch when it came out on VHS. 🤣💙💙💙
Thank you so much, @GippyWhite! You know how much I love this kind of trivia, but mostly I am happy to know this was your first R-rate movie haha. Mine was Road House with Patrick Swayze, if I remember correctly.
You guys should watch My Best Friend's Wedding if you haven't already seen it. It's one of my favorite Julia Roberts romantic comedy films, because it doesn't go the route I think it will, and that's unusual in a genre that follows a usual pattern. Side comment: at the opera, they were seeing La Traviata (by Verdi). It's about a woman who was a courtesan trying to get out of that life, so very apropos for Vivian to connect with.
We're finally on Patreon so I'm getting to watch early, yay! So true story, I grew up watching this and all the adult stuff would go over my innocent little head. In the scene where Viviane is showing Edward her condom options "I got red, I got green, I got yellow, I'm out of purple", I thought she was offering him a lollipop. 🤦♀️ And the "gold coin" was of course chocolate coins like you'd get in your Christmas stocking. Oh, to be that innocent again!!
Hahahahaha right?? Hey at least you didn't go quoting the movie at school, leading them to think you were passing out condoms lol. And I thought you were already on Patreon! I could have sworn you were. But either way, I am so happy you are now!! Thank you guys :)
Great reaction as always guys😁 Fun fact: The opera that he takes Vivian too is actually about a prostitute/sex worker who falls in love with a rich man. Keep up with the great work, you put a huge smile on my face☺️
The opera was La Traviata (The Fallen Woman), composed by Giuseppe Verdi. It premiered in Venice in 1853. It's about a prostitute who falls in love with a rich guy.

This was a whole thing. I mean you look back at it and realize that they were playing parts for each other and accidentally fell into those parts. I think it's possible they were able to stay in that place together but it would have involved a lot of conversation. A lot of compassion, understanding, and a willingness to help each other be the best of themselves. Also the opening scene is NOT Julia.
@@DavidvsFilm I mean, she was a prostitute. She was being the "girlfriend experience" for him. He fell into a "shining knight" role for her. Could this relationship really last? See my thoughts before. But it's a remake of a trope. It's in "My Fair Lady" as well, as well as some of Austin's work. I think you can keep going back in written history and find similar tales because it happens.
@@andidreyes5323 Definitely. And great comparison with My Fair Lady. I’ve made a similar comparison with what I call “elevator syndrome”- where total strangers are trapped in a stuck elevator for two hours and then leave engaged to each other. That ain’t gonna last! lol
New to your channel and I am so in love! Please do more Julia Roberts 90s, Julia Roberts, my best friends wedding, Mona Lisa smile, Runaway bride, good ones I promise

3:43- Jason Alexander played Lionel in the Rodger and Hammerstein's Cinderella film with Brandy and Whitney Houston(May she rest peacefully in heaven). 17:55- I don't condone prostitution, however it is a HUGE disrespect for him to just placing the money on the bed instead of handing it to her like a person. Which is literally the point of this film, yes prostitution is wrong, but they are STILL human beings and should be treated as such. You saw how Phil treated her the second he learned that Vivian was a prostitute, he saw her as an object to violate instead a person(Which gives me more reason to hate him especially what he almost does to Vivian later on). Thomas actually did treat Vivian with respect and dignity like any person would treat any other human, of course he made the mistake of dehumanizing her here and a second time later on. 19:43- Opera is super underrated and I hate it when imbeciles mock what they don't even try to understand. 23:06- Rahab was a prostitute who turned her life around and became redeemed read Joshua 2:15,18, 21 and 6:17. 23:50- She has every right to be on edge around that bastard. He crossed her boundaries and dehumanized her. 26:32- Adore this film, this film is a reminder that people need to treat people like people despite whatever sins they're doing. I kind of hope that people who are in prostitution realize their worth and stop selling their souls like that because I know they can add value to society if they believe in themselves.
Having known a few prostitutes, I can say with certainty that the majority of them don't want to be doing it, but are trapped in that situation by poverty, addiction, mental health problems, and/or extremely sh*tty relationships. Typically they come from very messed up families of origin, and were sexually abused as children. You're absolutely right that they should always be treated kindly, and also I wish more resources existed to help those who want out of that life but can't do it alone. There used to be "institutions for fallen women" that would house and feed them and teach them employment skills. I'm sure those institutions weren't perfect, but at least they were something.
Is this rated R? 🤣. Julia Robert's is a Hollywood treasure, she's adorable in this. Fetta-titty 🤣. Hector Elizondo always has the best characters, from this to Princess Bride to Last Man Standing. The "Movies That Made Us" episode is pretty interesting if you haven't seen it yet.
My favorite couple! I'm talking about you not Julia and Richard! Definitely late to the party I need my David fix I haven't watched you in awhile. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind is a must one of my favorite movies And how did I forget Richard Gere was married to Cindy Crawford?! I miss the 90s 😭
Hey Lauren!! Haha thank you. Julia is so jealous of me, it's not even funny. I mean, I don't want to make her feel bad, so I let her have her fame and glory, but you rightfully pointed out the true talent when iit comse to Marc and me.. lol. I want to watch Eternal Sunshine!! It was on the same poll as this one and lost, but I'm not giving up on it :)

No gerbils were harmed in the making of this Hooker With the Heart of Gold nonsense. Sigh… So friggin early 90s. If it wasn’t Julia I would never have made it ten minutes into it. It was originally called “Three Thousand Dollars” and they didn’t end up together. After test screenings they changed it and it became a massive hit.

Thank you so much!!! And welcome :) Yeah, I would love to. She has some great movies, and those you listed are no exception. I've seen MBFW and RB probably about 100 times combined haha, but I don't think Marc has. I'll put 'em on the list. Thanks again
Btw she had a body double
Oh really?? Ahhh ok. That’s cheating, but I get it lol
Great movie.I think I watched your reaction before but didn’t leave a comment ❤
Thank you!!!
Totally agree!! Yeah I want to watch that.
Was he in Princess Bride? I remember him in The Princess Diaries. I don't remember him in The Princess Bride though 🤔🙂
@@aveemarie268 I meant Pincess Diaries, too many "princess" movies 😆
Hahaha, thats funny, I thought..wow I've seen that so many times and I missed him🤣🤣🤣
❤
Hated this when it came out, hate it to this day but I needed me some Marc & David.
Haha thanks Jeff!!
My favorite couple! I'm talking about you not Julia and Richard!
Definitely late to the party I need my David fix I haven't watched you in awhile.
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind is a must one of my favorite movies
And how did I forget Richard Gere was married to Cindy Crawford?!
I’m so late!!! Love this movie!!
You’re never late my dear! The party doesn’t start without you lol. ❤️ This was a great movie 😁
@@DavidvsFilm you are always so sweet David ❤️ i needed that today. Thank you ❤️
@@witchfromthenorth5294 Just telling the truth, but of course!!
@@DavidvsFilm love you! And i need to get you guys to sweden so we can have a glas of wine ( or peach tea) and just laugh and talk for hours!… oh we can go watch stuff to.. you know.. some swedish high lights.. like…. 👀… the castle.. forrests.. and IKEA 😂❤️❤️
I swear, your commentary made this so much fun. Enjoying the channel. Please consider HARLEM NIGHTS & BOOMERANG. Both star Eddie Murphy and a host of other comedians.
Thank you!! OMG I haven’t seen Harlem Nights since I was a kid. Great cast, you’re right, but Richard Pryor and Della Reese especially. Never saw Boomerang though!
Aaron! lol
😂 heights and hepatitis
Any chance you can react to Death Becomes Her or Clue?
Well, we’ve both seen Death Becomes Her, so that for sure would be more of a commentary rather than first time reaction, but Clue sounds fun!
Good morning gentlemen
Another good movie staring richard gere and julia roberts is
Runaway bride.
You should review that one.
Ok have a nice day and ill talk to you later. T.t.f.n.
Thank you so much!! I’ve (David)seen that one, but I don’t think Marc has.
Y'all from Texas?
@@christobaliancantu7112 yes sir! Houston
Figured that out when y'all said Whataburger 😆
@@christobaliancantu7112 haha yep. You’ll probably hear an HEB reference and a Buc-ee’s drop at some point too 😁
@DavidvsFilm there's no grocery store better than HEB in my opinion 😄
What a couple a gays.
Thanks! Back at ya
gay men that had never seen Pretty woman????? turn in your toasters!
Haha we’ve seen it now!!! We’ll turn in ONE toaster, that’s it!
