Yakima Showdown on 2017 Mazda CX-5 with 2019 Hobie Outback Kayak

  • Here's a quick demonstration of the Yakima Showdown kayak loader on my 2017 Mazda CX-5. I'm using it with my 2019 Hobie Outback. It makes getting the kayak on top of the car and strapped down much faster and easier. I don't even have to climb up and strap it down anymore!
Sorry about the first couple of seconds of audio not getting picked up by the GoPro, but the rest should be fine. There are a few times where the audio isn't as loud as I hoped when I was facing away, but I'll try to remember to only speak when facing the camera in the future.
And before anyone notices and comments, I did remember to remove the Hobie kickstand device that protects the rudder before I drove away to go fishing today.

Is the Yakima 'rated' for the weight of the Hobie Outback? The Thule Hullavator says the Outback is too heavy, as it is rated at around 80 pounds....

Pretty sure it is not. I have one on my car and it failed after 13 months. I thought they may have some leeway built into it but was not the case

The Outback is just barely above the weight rating on the Showdown. I've used this very often for three years, including on rough backroads and at freeway+ speeds and not had any issues with it. I know of others who have done the same with this rack on other similar weight kayaks for years.

I thought the 2019 out back weighed to much for the showdown?

Did you have to use the sup cradles to fit this kayak? I know it states 28" max width but obviously the outback you are using fits pretty good. Looking at this as an alternative to rear loading. Thanks!!

What is the maximum crossbar spacing available? I transport kayaks in the 14 - 18 foot range and am leery of narrow crossbar distances.

How is this yakima showdown doing so far ? Do you see any harm to your hull on your hobie outback kayak ?

I have a Mazda CX5 & I am very interested in this Kayak Loader. I have CX5 roof wracks & they are rounded at the ends with no protrusion beyond the roof. Yakima TH-cam shows that a protrusion beyond the roof is necessary to allow proper fitting. I am waiting on Mazda to advise if their roof racks & CX5 roof can bear the weight of my (yet to be purchased) kayak - 33.5kgs. Are your roof wracks Mazda or another brand? Also, front & rear strap downs anchored to front & rear of the vehicle. Do you use them & do they damage the vehicle (rubbing etc). Thanks for sharing

How has this been going for you? Do the kayak holders actually spread to the full width of the Outback? I have a showdown and am thinking of getting an Outback but cannot see how the yak holders will spread wide enough, they are almost at full width with my OK Prowler and its 740mm, the Outback is 860mm

    • @northwestkayakfishing7262

It works fine for me. I spread them to the max width on my previous kayak and left them there for the 2019 Outback.

Update - bought he Showdown to use with Outback and it lasted 13 months before breaking, I assume to the weight of the Outback being above the rated weight

@@yakkindaz7477 - I have used this frequently for years, and I know of others who have done so with the Showdowns and similar, or heavier, weight kayaks. You don't mention how yours failed, but it should not have been expected if you only used it with a Hobie Outback. I have seen one Showdown fail and it's because the person put a lot of body weight on the 50lb kayak when trying to snug the straps down. It was his body weight that broke it, not the weight of the kayak. If you notice that I push up on the kayak with my leg when tightening the straps, that is to prevent from adding any extra weight on the Showdown when it's fully extended which is its most vulnerable position for bending or breaking.

Armstrong Outdoors 3 I transport my kayak upside on my ladder racks and never tie off at the front or rear. Have done this for years. Never had any issues. Lots of my buddies do the same. I feel like it’s these companies trying to pinch more pennies from us saying ya gotta do this and that etc.

I don't use front and rear tie downs. The kayak is held very firmly in this loader. If you only use the crossbars with the kayak upside down on them or on thin or slippery cradles, you should use the front and rear tie downs when transporting, especially at freeway speeds or in heavy crosswinds.

You can, but not two of the Showdown loads on that 60" width rack. I have used J-hooks to transport my wife's kayak but usually use my cargo box on the other side to transport gear.
