good information; look at some of the guys doing Van conversions they are putting in some of the newer A/Cs and solar systems. I think some of their ideas might just work in a GMC.

Everything I’ve read about mini splits on vehicles is that it immediately voids the warranty because it wasn’t installed stationary. I don’t know that it’s a huge issue because they’re usually pretty reliable. Warranty and finding a good location for the condenser are probably the two main downsides. If you delete the propane tank, would any condenser fit there?
Upside is it’s much quieter, more efficient, and any HVAC guy can work on it. This also clears the roof and would allow for a lot more solar panels if that’s your thing. There’s a lot of people in the trailer world using the mini split AC/heat pump setup and love it. Really cool to see you talking about this. Thanks Jim!

I'd like to hear more about your plans for a mini split. I put one on my 76 Eleganza but haven't had it out camping yet as I'm still refurbishing it. The only thing I could come up with was welding a platform on the back in place of the bumper and putting the condenser there. The indoor unit is all the way in the back above the back window. I could not find a condensing unit small enough to put in the propane area. I think a ducted mini split would have been better but then the indoor unit would be difficult to place, that and I didn't want to run the lineset in any way that would cause potential leaks. Right now the lineset is just run up through the rear license plate light opening and then behind the back panel up to the indoor unit. Also, what have you come up with as far as btu's? Mine is rated at 12k but can put out up to 17k. I would have liked more but then I'd have to go to 240V based on what I could find available.

They make inverter AC's that are more efficient, but no one sells them in the states. I got a 48v input variable speed AC compressor pack from china that was r22. Reclaimed the R22 out of the old unit with dead compressor, replaced the compressor with the 48V unit, and mounted the controller inside the air inlet area to keep it cool. Ran new 8 AWG to the unit from my battery bank. Works great, I installed a generic power meter, so i can see the current draw of the unit. I can tune it down so that it will draw less than the PV outputs, or jam it full tilt to cool it down.

They have come out with 15,000 btu DC roof air conditioners for van conversions. So I think you could have 2 or 3 of them running off the altenator. No need for the generator. They are very expensive. But you could have a lithium battery bank that could charge off the altenator or electric.
Here's a video of the DC air.

Saw a TH-cam video recently of someone doing walkthrough of there GMC. The had the top covered in Solar panels, and had installed a Mini-split. The inside unit I believe was over the kitchen area, and they had installed the outdoor unit in the Onan Generator bay. (and got rid of the generator) I dont recall where they had the batteries located, but they were able to run the coach electrics and the A/C off the solar, so did not need the generator.
EDIT: found the video. The solar placement looks outstanding. th-cam.com/video/-7vxEY9TaeA/w-d-xo.html
