Thanks again Jim as a ranch hand I'm so happy to support your life long passion for the gmc motorhome.
I am close to starting on my own gmc and will need to drive it 800kms so this is valuable information.

Wish I'd had this to read in 2020. First trip I ran out of gas foolishly believing the gas gauge. Luckily after freaking out a bit I remembered reading about the reserve tank.

I dont like to set the choke before turning the key. Engine startup is where most engine wear occurs. I always crank the engine for atleast 10 seconds then hit the gas to set choke and she fires up immediately (1977 403 engine). This gets oil onto the camshaft and circulated through engine before firing.

Beautiful looking GMC. I love the sofa just behind the driver's seat.

Could have used this advice last fall! Picked up the 23’ Birchaven from Watertown,NY and drove it 3 hours to Rochester. Took the highway the entire way. I had never driven one or anything so big before. It got dark about 30 min into the trip. Went flawlessly except I could not get the cruise control to work. Trans was recently rebuilt, brakes and tires like new, so I knew it would make the trip. Bad gas smell if you overfill it. Must have a bad vent line. Every other system was broken or not working, but it all works now and I love driving it. Great visibility, easy to maneuver in tight spots.

I think never overfill the motohome the venting is poor
Best option go with 64 gallon gas tank allumium comes with venting hoses and vent. I'm working on this motorhome its got hydrolock

The original cruise sets by pushing the switch on the turn signal in half way. All the way in turn it off. Maybe that? Glad your having fun, keep it up and thanks for the support

My first drive of my 1973 "survivor" GMC Motorhome was a 425 mile nightmarish, suicide mission, like many first time users I have seen on utube. After telling the owner to basically shut-up-and-take-my-money, I was off. The first ten miles were dedicated to rounding the square tires. Of course, my Q-jet fuel filter clogged after 90 miles and that put me on the side of the road. I was able to limp the sputtering, dying whale 20 miles in one hour to a facility that was closed. The next day, after a $50 dollar repair by an HONEST independent repair shop, it drove great the rest of the way like a bat-outta-hella, I needed to keep it under 65 with those 15 year old tires but she wanted to go faster. At one stop for fuel I noticed the license plate was from 1988
    Its a sweet ride now

To me it's like sitting behind the wheel of my 1975 C-20. As in hey I know this dashboard. looking down the sides in the mirror's damn this is just a little bit bigger than the Chevy long body van, nothing like sitting on the command chair in a GMC, Rochester quadrajet? It sounds like is the controlled fuel leak unit your using. A favorite of GMs to top a big block with. Basically a good carburetor when they want to work. I like a carburetor you can drop a soda can down the secondaries.. big block with a set of headers with the secondaries opening up, is a beautiful sound on the highway. especially with the header cutout switch activated so it's open headers. If you don't see me coming up on you, you sure as hell can hear me. Nothing like the feel of when it wakes up and remembers it's a GM big block, and thinks it's a front wheel drive sports car. Hold on old girl don't have to be this feisty..

Thanks Jim, that was my experience too, first problem was the break seized in front driver side....a little hit with a hammer, and WD40, that let me rich home safe and replace the clogged rubber lines .

bring a set of basic tools and a Flashlight or Headlight. If you are getting close to your 250 miles and you have to go up a hill STOP and get gas! I ran out of gas coming into North Georgia 100 miles from home going up just a slight grade. Fuel gauge said a little less than half a tank so I thought I had a problem.

Some really good tips there. Like the belts thing. I doubt that most of us would even think about that.
I wonder, however, if these "reno" places that rebuild/renew these motorhomes, go the extra mile (sorry) LOL and just change all belts for new. They should. Also things like the electrical systems, especially old crap. It would be good to just remove old tech and replace with updated equipment, replacing any suspect wires with new, silicone wire.
I saw one last week (video on a reno) that was THE MOST AMAZING RENO I've seen to date.
The coach literally looked like it just rolled off the assembly line at GM.
Even when you open the 2 hood things in the front, lots of stuff was replace with new and updated versions. Even the batteries where replaced with high end batteries.
Then inside, the entire dashboard was rebuilt and even a smart screen installed, that monitors everything. SWEET!
The exterior paint job was amazing as it had that deep metallic shine to it.
The entire interior was redone as well, with all updated equipment.
The only downside, is for some reason, they actually took out the stove, completely! So NO STOVE! That's a deal breaker. LOL
Sadly, I'm becoming obsessed with these machines and kick my own arse for not buying one of these decades ago. Instead, we bought a stupid 5th wheel with the thought of buying a 350 dually, which never happened. Frankly, this machine was not even known to me at that time. Sighhhh....
    oh well.
Let's all petition GM to remake new versions of these, following this original design, especially those amazing floating dual wheels at the back.
The other thing I love with these is the open feeling inside.
A few weeks ago, we looked at some motorhomes, not those huge ones but the smaller ones about the length of these GMCs. Not impressed at all! They feel so closed in and dark. Every make and model.
    Oh well.

Yeah, a GMC fits a unique niche….. a “full sized” 26’ Motorhome…. Most are called “downsized”… definition= everything is too small!
