      David James Well they had to dub Dalton in ‘Sextette’, so I’m guessing he’s not much better. But it wouldn’t have been worth it anyway - what’s the point in having Tim sing if he hasn’t got an elderly Mae West to sing with?

    Apparently, according to the actor of Saunders, there was going to be a special effect which would have showed Saunders being cut in half by the doors that were sabotaged.
    And apparently the server and bond were meant to exchange dialogue, with the server saying “I’ll get a stretcher”, and then bond looks up and says “better make that two.”

    Dalton can do comedy and silliness. The problem with the first scene was more the tone of the movie. Something like this would be just as out of place in For Your Eyes Only as TLD.
    Maybe one day you'll get around to Hot Fuzz for Dalton showing his comedy chops.

  • @dennisjames6753

    Had Roger Moore done the flying carpet scene, the moment he leaps onto the back of the motorbike, I can picture his OOOORRRHH! sound inserted. I like the carpet bit actually, though this looks like a work print edit. I imagine the final cut would have more polish. Still, no real time for silliness when Dalton is concerned. As for the Q scene, anything with Desmond is wonderful, IMO. Still, these bits are a bit "meh". Timothy looks like someone on their first day at a new job being shown around the office. A bit stiff, and awkward there.

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Def the final ver would have had music and tighter editing. The awkwardness is heightened here because of the lack of flow.

    A great bond unfortunately the general audience weren't ready for a more serious take on the character after the much loved Roger at the time but I think with hindsight the public have realised what a great 007 Dalton was and this film is classic bond

    • @CaminoAir
      @CaminoAir 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've always liked Dalton a great deal as Bond, but the film makers weren't set up yet to make the most of that kind of Bond. They did a good job when Dalton was in realistic action situations, but they still wanted to hold onto some of the established larger than life spy stuff and some of the sillier humor (e.g. the bar fight in 'Licence To Kill') and it undermined Dalton. His two movies just weren't consistent enough and I don't believe a third Dalton film would have sorted all of that out. I dread to think of what a third Dalton film would have been like if the producers/writers/director decided on an 'Octopussy' kind of semi-serious/semi-humorous approach. Maybe Dalton's two Bond movies gave us as much as was possible at that time.

    This recently became my favorite Bond film upon rewatch of the whole series, I think its a unique film in terms of a more emotional performance from Bond and differences in terms of film structure, especially considering they take up time to build up the relationship between him and Kara. Can you imagine original choice Pierce Brosnan playing it? I think he could do the pantomime-ness with a flourish.

      @@davidjames579 The Living Daylights is my favorite Bond film (despite the Mujahideen bit not againg well) but I would love to see a more serious version of it with Dalton.

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@exodus1960 Yeah I agree about Brosnan. I also think Dalton can work with comedic lines, such as "You should have brought Lillies". But his is a dry wit, and more in fitting with the character being realistic and darker. As such the broader comedy doesn't gel as well. Living Daylights was finding it's feet with Dalton's Bond, and also does feel like it's tugging into different versions of a Bond film. Licence To Kill was more consistent and fitting to Dalton.

    Which is stiffer - the carpet, or Timothy Dalton? That scene would have been standard fare in a Roger Moore film. He would have carried that off and you could even added a double taking camel. It wouldn't have fitted the Living Daylights you're right but it's still enjoyable to watch as a deleted scene. The Q scene is not all that memorable but enjoy all scenes with Desmond. He played well off Timothy. He was probably glad not to be working with someone who held up idiot board with "Bollocks" written on it as he was trying to remember lines. Agree niether would have added to the film and the carpet scene would have taken away from the tone of it

  • @andrewroffey351
    @andrewroffey351 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I think the flying carpet in a great concept and could work if it was executed well as part of a chase sequence, with adrenaline pumping and Bond using his ingenuity. Having said that, coming after the dramatic scene with Pushkin, it would have been sorely out of place.
    Plus, as John Glen pointed out, it looked a bit naff. Timothy's salute is highlight of the sequence for me.

  • @spencerkindra8822

    I think the Living Daylights gets slept on as one of the best Bond movies. Timothy Dalton is great as James Bond and his performance is much closer to that of how Bond is in the books. The plot is pretty straight forward, very From Russia With Love-esque. Also I love the scenes of combat when Bond and Kara go to Afghanistan. Is Daylights the only Bond movie where Bond goes to a real life war zone? Either way, it's definitely the best Bond movie of the 1980s.

    The Living daylights was acutally my favourite Bond movie until Skyfall was released and it is still one of my favourite even though the list has changed a bit. Clever Video. I agree that these scenes were not right considering the tone of this film. I'll never forget the effect this film had on me when I first saw it upon it's release. Timothy Dalton was clearly the best portrayal of James Bond & it was obvious that he had read the Ian Fleming novels, studying the character down to the last detail. His performance blew me away! I was bitterly disappointed when he stepped down from the role after only 2 pictures. Still, when you see Daniel Craig today he is very similar to Timothy Dalton's version of this great character. I believe he was so underrated.

    I don't think Timothy Dalton's performance lets the "Flying wooden carpet" scene down as much as the WHOLE FUCKING SCENE LETS ITS SELF DOWN. I know it's a rough cut, and they aint no James Bond Theme added to it or Barry's brilliant score for his last Bond adventure. But it's like a sence from Octopussy, and no matter what they did, Even The Bond Theme over it, it would still look like utter shit. It's almost an 80's version of DieAnotherDay's infamous wind surfing scene, it's that ridiculous, and of course John Glenn is going to just say he found the carpet a bit stiff so disposed of the scene, cos he don't wanna admit that his "briliant idea" was a pile of dead fish. That was about as much a carpet as my front door. And remember that this is the same film that Bond & the girl use her cello case as a sledge to escape over the boarder, if they had have had both these quite similar scenes in the finished film it would have been beyond stupid. I think it's a trait with John Glenn unfortunatley, that he has muck up his films with "funny" or "humourus" scenes that are about as welcome as finding a condom on the cucumber in the fridge. They're just akward and not funny, he can't seem to just make a serious spy film (which was the angle TLD & Dalton was going for) without adding a beach boys song, bond in a gorilla suit or dressed as clown, or tarzan-esque jungle antics. In all honesty he did well on FOR YOUR EYES ONLY & LICENCE TO KILL, and manged to not chuck in his eye roll & sigh humour and we got a serious set of movies as a result. I mean can you imagine if that crappy dead end joke scene was left in the movie, how much it would drag the movie down. I suprised they put the scene out for folk to see, i'd destroyed the tapes if I'd come up with junk like that.

    I’d have gone further than deleting these scenes, and edit down the car chase near the border a bit too. It jars with me, given the tone of the rest of the film. I’ll accept it’s part of the plot, and how Bond and Cara get over the border, but the lasers cutting the bottom half off the Lada Police car, the bit where the Aston drives around with the shed on it, and the cutting the hole in the ice could easily be cut for my liking. That still leaves an Aston with rocket launchers and skis (and so toy sales for Eon to benefit from), as well as the daft cello escape, but you can’t have everything.

    The Q scene would have been better if he had banged his head on the car roof, so the line about mind your head would have fitted better. Dont forget Q also explains the whistling keyring, so that takes up some time. The quill pen thing was probably to do with the russians signing cheques with them, as the tip of the feather pen doesnt leave an imprint on the paper like a ball point, so you cant just use the old 'rubbing a pencil over the under pages' to find out the names. Instead the names would be wired directly to MI6. This gag feels like an in-joke but also reveals a bit too much about cold war technology. By 1987 Im sure this was being phased out, and you dont want to rub their noses in it. I guess 99.9% of people would not get the gag and Im glad it was dropped. The rooftop chase was long enough and it should end with the distance shot of Bond getting away. The film drags until the Hercules raid so its best this was cut. I would have also cut the abduction by Twiggy and bumping in to Felix Lighter, as he adds nothing to this story.

    Not a Dalton fan as such but…
    Sometimes in music the transitional albums are really interesting. They can capture the best of both worlds. The old style brings familiar vibes while there is ”the new thing” bringing interest and excitement.
    I prefer Moore, but honestly, both Dalton movies are better than Golden Gun or View to a Kill.👍🏻

    John Glenn was so used to working with Roger and his style of Bond that it makes sense that they had the carpet idea, as if he was going to do it. The scene would have worked if there was the Bond music playing while Bond was casually sitting on the carpet as it moved, and getting on the motorbike also, so we are not seeing it at its best.
    After 7 Roger Bond films to then having a rather stiff and dull Dalton was a bit too much of a change, especially for me when I was 10 at the time of this film, and had grown up watching the fun and engaging Roger Bond films.

    I agree that the movie was better off without these scenes, but for different reasons. I hated the silliness of the Moore movies and welcomed the change in tone of The Living Daylights. Also, hadn't we just had Bond chased through a bazaar in Octopussy? And this would have been on top of the chase that ended with Bond riding a cello down a hill? Ugh! Humor. No thank you. I always dreaded the visits to Q's lab as well. Rote bits that hardly ever added to the plots (aka "This is the part where the movie takes a break.").

    I found neither scene to be particularly noteworthy. Nothing of value appears to have been lost. In my personal opinion, they also should have cut a few shots from the entire Afghanistan sequence near the end. That one just keeps dragging on and on, particularly the Mujahideen assault on the Soviet base.

    Calvin did you seen the extended action sequence scene from No Time To Die on the Jimmy Fallon show? The antagonists seem kind of young especially the guy louring Bond. I love the look Bond gives like what’s going on? Sort of a dirty look. Then the reaction to him getting shot as he didn’t expect it. Great acting from Craig. Kind of find it odd that there’s a massive stone conveniently placed there. I think I’m nitpicking.😂
