Hana. yeah i grew up with these foods also because my mom cooks them at home even though i live in america and honestly i eat like none of them except a few
I was born in Russia, lived there, and visit from time to time. I have tried all of these foods, and most of it is pretty good if done right. As most of the Russian commenters pointed out, the Herring under Fur Coat (Seledka pod shuboy) needs to be cooked right, otherwise it doesn't taste good at all. Judging by the look of what they ate in the video, it wasn't prepared very well. Russian bologna varies, but sometimes it can be damn good. Doktorskaya is delicious; way better than any American bologna that I've tried. There are tasteless varieties, and they probably tried one of them. Pickled tomatoes taste interesting, but I haven't had them for a while so I can't really recall the flavor too well at the moment. I remember liking them. Holodets is something I eat pretty often, but always after i spread some Hren (horseradish with beets) on top of it. Hren makes it taste great. I doubt it would be very edible without it. If they described their Salo as "hard", then you gave them some bad stuff. I know sometimes crappy Salo can be very hard and tasteless. Usually, Salo is a cut of meat and soft fat layered in even intervals, and it's sometimes peppered. Salo can be great if you get the right stuff. I personally don't think they gave them very good examples of each food, but that's alright. At least they did a video about Russian food: that's something I wanted to see them make.
apocalypse359 Pickled tomatoes are super yummy with potato mash! (at least in my opinion) And I think after all the comments I've read yours its the best. (Moldovian myself tho but we also eat such foods ^-^)
Thanks! I thought the tone of my comment would come across as pretty critical, but I guess it didn't. Usually people like the funnier or more entertaining ones. I appreciate that. Also, I thought that most of these foods were only common in Russia, but a lot of commenters have pointed out that they can be found anywhere in the former Soviet Union, and it seems even in Moldova, which is on the very edge. That's fascinating. I wonder how these foods spread. I always assumed that there wasn't much cultural mixing in the former Soviet Republics, but it seems that I'm wrong.

it's considered healthy, because it increases your iron level in blood. they also sell it in the Baltic states. I would never eat it. eventhough you can't taste the actual ingredients at all.
***** I don't find them amazing, but my point was that what Americans find 'bizarre' are totally normal in other countries and what is bizarre to other countries is normal in America.
As a Russian American I guess its sorta gross to people who havent really eaten this stuff but to somebody whose had all of this food in their diet thru-out the years to some extent, its actually pretty fucking good. I would recommend Beat Soup however. Borscht ^_^ Also Blini (Thin Pancakes), Ikra (Fish Eggs) Usually Good With Bread, Salad Olivier (Potato Salad)..... All of that is much better than what you guys put --- Shoulda done more research haha
Kholodets looks like scrapple or hogs head cheese. Two similar American foods. Yes, that's what they are really called. My mom loves the stuff, I won't even taste.
Double4anime borscht and blini are fucking amazing!! My Russian friend and I made it for a bunch of our dorm mates at college celebrating the Old New Year. My family may not be ethnic Russians (they're actually originally from Minsk) but it's great to have Russian culture in our lives!
Double4anime Yea as a Russian American who was also raised fairly heavily in Russian culture, there were plenty of other awesome Russian foods that they could have picked that these guys would've liked.
homie93 it's simply normal if you cook it well. There's nothing special in this food. The only thing I don't like is kholodets because of its texture. And it's cold.
Mateusz Wojtkiewicz Poczemu, brat moj? My nasliedniki sławianskoj kultury - także kak i polaki. Potomki Cziecha, Liecha i Rusa. Polaki naszi brat'ja po krowi... Żal, nie po orużiju. :(

I think they're overthinking the fact that the pig fat is raw. Otherwise yeah it isn't that bad lol Kholodyets on the other hand is so gross to me. The texture...ugh. like I get why it exists of course but man
I kind of feel very upset because of how these people reacted to my cultures food. They were very rude and disrespectful in my opinion. I know that they’re not used to it but they shouldn’t say some of the comments that they said. It was very hurtful to be honest.
It would make for a boring video for them to politely chew and then say "not my cup of tea, but perhaps for someone else it is" they will never make a video like that, because it wont get views.
Their rude because they didn't like it and reacted honestly? You whiny little Pansies. Go cry to your mommy about your hurt feelings,or do like Americans do, grow a spine and deal with it.
They're obviously going to say it's bad cause they know what they're eating. If they're more open minded then I feel like they would like most of the food they try on buzzfeed
As an Indian i had a tough time adapting to Russian cuisine initially in my 7 years of study in Russia, but eventually it has become one of my favorite.People think Russians are into bland foods, but infact its so flavorsome.Salo is absolutely amazing guys and their pickels are just heavenly.Miss Russia so much :((
When they described Salo "raw" I facepalmed. It's cured! And I have yet to meet any omnivore North American or South American or Western European who didn't get addicted to Salo- the last item.
The original recipe contains a few rats or mice, who lived in those bologna factories. They went to eat in the evening, into the machines where they stirred the bologna mixture. In the morning, when the technician went to work and started the machines, it was told that the mice and rats screamed, when they were chopped to pieces.
RecklessGirl100 no, you don't ) you can even eat it just fine on its own. It's perfect with bread and butter, but, as far as I know, all their bread is too sweet, while Russian/Ukrainian bread that goes well with salo is not sweet, is slightly salted.
I probably couldn't do bologna now but everything else - yes. Kholodetz is actually super healthy - full of collagen if done right:) There are so many yummy foods in Russian cuisine.
In my culture (indigenous from the Canadian Arctic) we were taught never to call someone’s food gross and be glad that someone is sharing with you. The over the top exaggerated disgust is so disrespectful and unnecessary.
Would love Blini, borscht (of Slavic origin in the modern day Ukrainian area, a useless argument started because of this), and some desert related items, but I guess this is the "Bizarre Russian Foods" video! (Plov, Pilmeni, Vinigret, Oladushki, etc too!)
Ofc! We also have it in Romania and it is called "slanina" but you almost never serve it without red onion. Onion makes it so enjoyable. And you can also cook it. It is excellent for scrambled eggs or grilled :P
I'm 7 years late with this comment but Salo is not just a raw pig fat, Salo is marinated in salty and herby brine...so technically it's not raw and very delicious. I grew up eating all of that and I love it so much. I guess that's just me 😇😊
The reactions were pretty offensive tbh, I'm Russian American and I grew up with this food and I wouldn't trade it for any American McDonald's bullshit. I understand not everybody likes the same food, but claiming that it tastes like "acid being thrown on your grandma" is really disgusting to say. Really disappointed buzzfeed, really am. And the title is offensive too, these aren't "bizarre" this is all literally food that people eat pretty commonly so get the facts right too.
Alesia Aliashko It's bizarre to Americans. These people were there to make you laugh, and give their honest opinions . And that's exactly what they did. Don't be one of those people who takes harmless jokes offensive.. -_-
Making fun of other people's cultures isn't something I would say is funny. There's a lot of other videos they make that are funny, but trying a cultures food, and making rude comments isn't funny. I know that I'm not the only one offended by this. If you aren't offended, good for you, if you are, I totally agree in saying its offensive.
Brought borsch for my lunch at work one day (I am Russian, living in USA)...one of my co workers said "It looks like a blood...is this some sort of a Halloween meal?":))
The chippest set of russian food has been chosen. If you'd like to try genuine Russian food you should try ural pelmeni, pancakes with black or red caviar, pancakes with marmalade, meat cake, fish cake, beluga, sevruga, uha (fish soup) etc. I've tried everything from the list and can say it was absolutely fantastic.
i am from ukraine and i love buzz feed, and especially watching americans try diffrent wierd foods, and i always thought that those nation ate some weird stuff, but today i same them eat "bizarre" russian food and i food it really funny, because this in not bizarre for me at all these are the things i actually eat pretty much everyday, it really fun to see these cultural differences :) thanks for a fun video
Lena Hecht
Generally no, we don't. Unless you're from an area that has cultural ties to fish cuisine (I'm from Minnesota, have enjoyed lutefisk) it's not common to eat fish here.
I'm Lithuanian and we eat all of these. Totally used to them 😂. Like I myself do not eat them anymore but I remember going to my grandma's house every summer breqk and only eating this.
Herring under coat is amazing!! Don't you lie thyour teeth damn you! If person who made it is a bad cook doesn't make the dish bad. Pickled tomatoes isn't for everyone, it's not bad though. Kholodets is a very specific and few people really like it and you eat it with a bread. If my mom would make it I would eat it but I wouldn't be the one saying Let's make some of that delicious goodness! Salo must be almost frozen for you to eat it and pretty thin. It's not a raw pork fat it must be how you americans say matured, it must be covered in salt and spices and then kept in freezer for like a week and it must be served almost frozen because only super Salo lovers can eat it when it's in room temperature.
When I watched that, I literally had one thought going through my ming: all of these are prepared in a thousand different ways. They depend, A LOT, on the contents. This can go sideways in a million ways. Did they boil the beets the right way? Did they even use the correct beets? What about the herring? You can get a herring that's waaaay too salty. Was the mayo any good? I mean, it's so easy to get all of those prepared in a wrong way, and considering these are quite plain foods, it's so easy to get the taste really wrong. I mean, it's like borsch. They prepare it differently in every family. Everyone has got a different recipe and an opinion on how a good Borsch should be.
Kholodets is a very specific and few people really like it and you eat it with a bread. ----- what is so specific?. it is chicken/pork./еtс soup=bouillon made as jello. actually it is very healthy, AND 100X times better than burnt meat Americans like to so much!
Frankly I'm russian and it's been 30 years eating Russian food and I can't stand kholodets. The texture! And all the other food is so easy to prepare wrong, I'm pretty certain it was prepared wrong. I think it's safe to say that, because they liked the pre-made (tomatoes and salo) and were very unhinged on the salad and entree - I don't think the shuba was any good. And kholodets IS a bizarre food. Because, I mean, soviet food was state-designed by actual food labs, it was made to be good for people from Latvia all the way to Chita, all walks of life.
1. Salo is consumed the wrong way here -- it should be sliced as thin as possible 2. It's not Russian food, it's mostly Soviet food, so now it's the food of approx 15 countries!
Sah Matn It's so weird watching people taste for the first time the food i have grown up with XD like pickled tomatoes. i never realized they dont have them in america. they are delicious XD
+Misha Metrikin lol great wikipedia history info search you got there. Us Romanians are culturally and ethnically the same as russians as far back as the slavic migration in the balkans in the 10th century. We have been culturally the same before and after the russian invasion of ww2.
I live in a country that has a border with Russia (in Europe), our culture is mixed with Russia, cause until 1990, we were a part of Russia. And our history mixes, so all that food are somewhat our traditional food too, and it's not as bad as they or you think.
Sergey Popov So, we will begin. Herring under a fur coat, and it should be known how to cook. Judging by that that I saw on a plate, it not herring under a fur coat, it is a shame. Sausage, I'm sorry, but it not the best boiled sausage. It is rubbish from starch and gelatin pieces. Marinated tomatoes, unsuccessful, at least categorically it is impossible to pickle tomatoes of different degree of a maturity. Jelly, mix of pork and chicken, you scoff who so does? Fat, rigid, with veins, well of course muck. Here after that legends of awful dishes are born... Translate by PROMT
They should have given them golubtsi, peroshki, russian salami, oliviye, vinigrette, and katleti. That would be a good list of food. I vote for a redo XD lol
yup, moreover they should make the drinks video with kvas, baykal, tarhun, kolokolchik, etc. I hope they will. And russian alcohol with different nalivka. )) And for sure russian sweets and snacks :3 ...Oh, they could give them okroshka with kvas, might be funny))
2511Lizzybusy oh, they vary much. Some people like them more sweet, some more spicy and sour. One of the classic recipes goes this way: 2 kilos of fresh tomatoes, 1,2 l of water, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1 tablespoon of vinegar and salt, additionally - 5 grains of black pepper, some garlic and laurel leaves, some dill for your taste. Take fresh tomatoes, wash them thoroughly wish cold water, make some stings with a toothpick. Put pepper, garlic, laurel and dill on the bottom of sterilised jars (you can sterlilise them in an oven or over steam from a boiled kettle). Put tomatoes then, cover them with freshly boiled water, close the jars and leave for 20 minutes. Afterwards pour the water from the jars into a sausepan, add sugar and salt (if you like sweeter tomatoes add more sugar) and boil. Add a tablespoon of vinegar into each jar and pour boiling marinade there, close the jars hermetically, then turn the jars upside down, cover them with blanket and let them cool down that way. Store in a cool place. Bon Appetit!
i've tried everythign except for the pickled tomato. they are all FINE except for the pig fat coz i don't like fat. i'm surprised by these people's reactions. russian food is not bad at all. i also dont' understand why they need to put the word "bizarre" in the title of the video when they don't for food of other nations. every culture has some weird food! *** i'm not russian. i'm an east asian who's dated a russian and has been to moscow several times.
Vineta okay. i guess i'm offended at how all people act like those are crazy weird food that no sane people will eat. they don't do that to food of other nations. russians eat a lot of more normal and nice food, why don't they serve those? they could have served caviar or caviar flavored chips (can you believe they have this? and it tastes great!). russian soups and salads are also good.
mlsi yeah, I know, we have a fair amount of russian dishes here, too. But I believe i would be the same if i had to eat worms or alive octopus.. just mind borders. Just the same I don't believe they would be extatic about our traditional blood sausages or cattle tongue salad :D
mlsi I reacted to this aswell... I felt that they wore more sensitive to every other national food they've tried. Something smells fishy, and it's not the herring...
Oh cmooon, You are eating it all wrong - holodets should be with lots horseradish or mustard, bolonia with butter, tomatoes and Salo(Ukrainian, although one in video seems bad so ok its russian) should be to Vodka, otherwise its like eating wasabi and soysause instead of sushi and claiming that you didnt liked sushi. And how could you forget caviar sandwish or pancake and primarily - a bowl of Olivye's salad?! After Vodka you definately safetly fall asleep face-Oivye'd. Trust me i support this tradition :)
Gotta agree they have missed a lot, and I mean a lot of Russian food. And even though they said (its also popular in Ukraine) about salo it is still wrong
2:10 lmao wrong, the capitol food was extravagant and decorative and full of many different types of flavours and foods. Not that that's not fancy or anything, but it ain't decorative or over the top, so it isn't capitol food
I remember I saw a video of people tasting Mexican Cheetos and I hated when a dude said "Americans should be the only ones making Cheetos" and I was like You kidding? I only get like a little bag a month and because a Pal that lives in Mexico send it to me (I send him Canadian Snacks too!) and I love them! I think Mexican Cheetos are the best next to American ones, sorry, but I love Cheetos Flamin Hot Puffs
I'm curious why Americans dislike Russians? I don't recall them doing anything to England i have no disrespect for them but for some reason quite a lot of Americans dislike Russians
my russian brothers and sisters, please calm down. this is buzzfeed. whatch any other video of any other person tasting any other foreign cuisine and relax. these guys are the least politically provoking people on earth. tastes differ, deal with it
The Kholodets brings back memories when Babushka Fetije made the snack the day before my birthday for as she would say “Sticky stomach” which she thinks makes the food taste better when it comes in which honestly had a placebo effect on me. But the food is so good how could they not like it?
I LOVE "seld' pod shuboi". (Herring under a fur coat.). It's my favorite. The video is wrong--it's not just herring, mayonnaise and beets (and if that's how they made it, I understand why they didn't like it). It's layers of carrots, potatoes, onions, beets and, on the bottom, herring, sort of glued together with mayonnaise...and it is absolutely DELICIOUS.
this is so fun because all of my friends and i are obsessed with this food, it is like really tasty 😂 and by the way, why there was no buckwheat kasha? I heard that if you are not used for it since the childhood it tastes horrible to you. that would be fun to watch)
Salo is not popular in Russia at all. I think typical russian man eats it about 1 time at year or less. But really great russian dishes are bliny, pelmeny, solyanka, okroshka, shashlyk and of course caviar butterbrots. That is taste of Russia.
Ещё посмотрите тут - th-cam.com/video/ndm6QyXhGMc/w-d-xo.html&feature=iv&src_vid=YvGDafHwVjo&annotation_id=annotation_897682111....
Just because it is Russian doesn't mean it was made well. I suspect these dishes were cafeteria grade slop, especially from the look of them - with the exception of the salo, which is also the one thing that many liked.
It is actually so hilarious to watch this, when you grew up with these foods.
We don't even call it "balony"
Idk how to spell it but we say it like 'Colbasa'
Pronounced "Kill-basa" actually ^_^

"It has a dirt after taste, which I like because I ate dirt growing up"
- Hood Stories, 2019
I never tried beet grown in US, but i consider it's their fault for such taste :p
The dirt aftertaste is because the beets, carrots and potatoes are boiled together dirty. My Russian wife says it makes no difference because you peel the skin off anyways, but I contend it significantly adds to the flavor profile. It never tastes the same with precleaned produce.

Evelina999 I would consider everyone from soviet union as Russian, still..
Zonin You do realise that the Soviet Union doesn't even exist anymore?
Evelina999 Yeah, I know.
I can tell you as 50% Russian these foods are actually really good.
Americans , eat your Burger with mayonnaise and pray that our agent is North Korea is not much you angry. Greetings from Russian Ivan and his tame bear.

They are I’m Mexican American and I love russian food especially
Good thinking comrad
Addison Rerecich don’t you mean all of it?
also our children eat sweet bars made of bulls blood its called gematogen its pretty bizarre for americans i guess
Nurbek Kuantyrov

joseph craft
gematogen is redish brown bar made of dried blood with honey and condensed milk
it's considered healthy, because it increases your iron level in blood. they also sell it in the Baltic states. I would never eat it. eventhough you can't taste the actual ingredients at all.
I love gematogen
THEY NEED TO TRY KVASS
Kvass is amazing i'm an American and I love it especially with Pelmeni

+amanda tolley no, that was selotcka pad shubey
^bad spelling according to how is pronounced in Russian
LizzieNinja
ohhhhhh..... ok thanks!
+amanda tolley yeah sure! :)
This isn't bizarre tho??? Like, I don't live in Russia, but Latvia; and I grew up with most of these foods and they are so normal?? :0
They're normal to YOU. What is "weird" and what is "normal" just depends on what you're used to.
Hi! I'm Latvian too ^^
Es arī, es nesaprotu kapēc viņiem nepatīk šie ēdieni
Man nepatīk tā gaļa želatīnā.
homie93 it's simply normal if you cook it well. There's nothing special in this food. The only thing I don't like is kholodets because of its texture. And it's cold.
I am Russian and I love all the food that was in this video
Well no dur.
Same my heritage is Russian
Sameeeee
me too
I hate holodets though lmao
Russian bologna? What the blin?
I omlu know doktorska kalbasa!
Alex VFX Exactly!
+Hermann Fegelein how*
Doctor Doubt Doctorskaya kalbasa is classic 👌🏼
@nastasya cherry XD ohh, Колбаса (I pronounce it as 'Kal' instead of 'kol' lmao)
@Rosida Andriyana nobody cares about you :)
Well, it's more Slavic foods rather than just Russian.

I remember as my Babushka set all these foods on the table I was like dang, I’m happy to be Russian because our foods are so unique
And such variety!
They're not bizarre though? These are very common in Russia
True, offensive somehow.
+Angela Carlsson - Bizarre to the American palate.
To Americans they are bizzare
Well to Russia and it's neighbors it's everyday food basically OZX7S
Angie C for us they're bizarre as all hell
they eat Tons of Bacon but think pig fat is gross? Its the same, just without meat xD
I think they're overthinking the fact that the pig fat is raw. Otherwise yeah it isn't that bad lol
Kholodyets on the other hand is so gross to me. The texture...ugh. like I get why it exists of course but man
In Soviet Russia, food try YOU!
haahahah :')

I kind of feel very upset because of how these people reacted to my cultures food. They were very rude and disrespectful in my opinion. I know that they’re not used to it but they shouldn’t say some of the comments that they said. It was very hurtful to be honest.
I agree; they are rude. If you don't like it it's fine, but don't make it sound gross for people who didn't try it.
It would make for a boring video for them to politely chew and then say "not my cup of tea, but perhaps for someone else it is" they will never make a video like that, because it wont get views.
Their rude because they didn't like it and reacted honestly?
You whiny little Pansies. Go cry to your mommy about your hurt feelings,or do like Americans do, grow a spine and deal with it.
>complaining about a youtube comment
>tells people they're whiny
@DiamondRose Pheonic oh, I thought Americans file suits for microagressions.
They're obviously going to say it's bad cause they know what they're eating. If they're more open minded then I feel like they would like most of the food they try on buzzfeed
Lisa Dixon
As an Indian i had a tough time adapting to Russian cuisine initially in my 7 years of study in Russia, but eventually it has become one of my favorite.People think Russians are into bland foods, but infact its so flavorsome.Salo is absolutely amazing guys and their pickels are just heavenly.Miss Russia so much :((
When they described Salo "raw" I facepalmed. It's cured! And I have yet to meet any omnivore North American or South American or Western European who didn't get addicted to Salo- the last item.
RUSSIAN BOLOGNA?? HELL LETS START CALLING OTHER THINGS LIKE THAT ITS KOLBOSAAA ;-;;
+Moonshine Kitten And Bologna isn't sausage (KOLBASAAAA) at all. they didn't eat a country
Are you Russian ?
Why yes I'm Russian. Aha and sorry if I seemed rude, just that's my most favorite food in the world ;-;

I'm surprised they forgot to give them Borscht or Kvass thats what they REALLY needed to try
Dovahchief117 It would make a Ukrainian episode then. And i dont belive they would get fresh natural kvass in US
In my city, we have a Russian store where we can buy all these foods and Kvass and Burotino.
Maria V.
Yeah they really should try borscht and kvass and also gulobtsi
'Russian Bologna'
Contains: ¯\_(ツ)_/ ¯
The original recipe contains a few rats or mice, who lived in those bologna factories. They went to eat in the evening, into the machines where they stirred the bologna mixture. In the morning, when the technician went to work and started the machines, it was told that the mice and rats screamed, when they were chopped to pieces.
Actually we using chicken, jellatin

That... That wasn't even that bad... I'm not Russian but my family is Slovak and I've seen all of these at parties just as small appetizers...
That's cuz you stole everything form us, including your flag and language.
Rspsand07 Most of Europe did... There's a lot of countries with similar languages, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, etc.
@Rspsand07 What's so special about faking the Russian identity? Grow up.
its simple. be proud of beeing a squarehead drinking vodka assaulting other people
+daGummy Sooo, replace vodka for fatty drinks and you have a perfect generic american 😂
I'm a Russian and I absolutely love this "meat jello." It's so funny how people were afraid of the foods I eat every day. THANK YOU BUZZFEED 😂😂
guys...you need to eat salo with borsh...
and where is borsh btw
borsht isn't a bizare russian food
RecklessGirl100 no, you don't ) you can even eat it just fine on its own. It's perfect with bread and butter, but, as far as I know, all their bread is too sweet, while Russian/Ukrainian bread that goes well with salo is not sweet, is slightly salted.
BORSH AND SALO IS UKRAINIAN.
Dmi G, borsh have in Russia, Ukraine, Poland etc.
where are blins, smetana and borsh soup?!
typical russian food
americans would call it crepes and sour cream, and I guess they are not as bizarre in the US...
pancakes, sour cream and borsht soup is basically beetroot soup tbh. It has cabbage and stuffs and is typically eaten with 'smetana' (sour scream)
Julie E because borsh is Ukrainian national food only

Hey, why they didn't try pelmeni or olivie? These dishes are much popular then salo
or piroshkes??
Also they should try borsht
The title itself says "bizarre" I don't think pelmeni and olivye are bizarre enough lol
olivye is life
yyyaaaaaaaaaasss
they forgot pelmeni and olive (salad)
+Valentina Kruglikovskaya and grechka
AMUR DM exactly!
pelmeni - dumplings hahaha
what about vareniki
+Kawaii Diana :3 Well, pelmeni originated from Ukraine, but yeah, I agree.
I misread the title as "Americans try Russian Roulette"............
+Faithtasticness I think that it would be much better if it were what you thought it was. I can hardly stand to look at these "people".
+David Gardner I can say the same about your profile picture
That sounds fake but....okay
PROTIP
Faithtasticness ват
bad attitude as always.
close-minded & disrespectful
In my culture (indigenous from the Canadian Arctic) we were taught never to call someone’s food gross and be glad that someone is sharing with you. The over the top exaggerated disgust is so disrespectful and unnecessary.
Calling someone 'close minded' is as ignorant as it gets
Would love Blini, borscht (of Slavic origin in the modern day Ukrainian area, a useless argument started because of this), and some desert related items, but I guess this is the "Bizarre Russian Foods" video! (Plov, Pilmeni, Vinigret, Oladushki, etc too!)
Vintovka I hate Borscht the fact I was forced to eat it is horrible. btw just say Crepes. Blini is crepe in russian
VintageGirl cre..wha? Dunnnno. word Blini is bliny :)
VintageGirl Pretty much yeah, there are. I will always call them Blini, however, because of the Slavic tradition of Maslenitsa.
Borscht is Ukrainian ._.
Anastasia Kh so as Salo
They don't like salo, but they love bacon
it is still fat😏
But it is cooked so the texture is completely different.
Ofc! We also have it in Romania and it is called "slanina" but you almost never serve it without red onion. Onion makes it so enjoyable. And you can also cook it. It is excellent for scrambled eggs or grilled :P
If CSGO has taught me anything, it's cyka blyat.

True, I too am Russian/ American but I mean some are bizarre but I don't think it was necessary of a title. But hey, at least we finally got a video!
Alesia Aliashko those tomatoes were weird too, we dont eat pickled cherry tomatoes but regular size ones
They're not making fun, and they thought the food was odd
Where tf is the borscht? One of the most iconic russian foods, and you skip it?
Borscht is actually a Ukrainian dish.
and it's not bizarre
Brought borsch for my lunch at work one day (I am Russian, living in USA)...one of my co workers said "It looks like a blood...is this some sort of a Halloween meal?":))
Libertea freedom its both
Borscht is not a "bizarre" food to us Americans. We like borscht.
Lol how could they forget vinigret and kompot and kissel
+Alexander Savitski Momma do we have soda? NO! kompot.
+Paydrovski Velasquez yah ikr
quite a bit healthier than soda.
and borshtch!
pelmeni ! like seriously !!!!

“It's so wet.“

I hate my mind lol
I feel like many of them overreacted 😁
Irina Generalova that's their job as hired actors
Because young Russian adults wouldn't overreact if they tried deep fried sticks of butter or those burgers with six patties and doughnut buns or Spam?
They weren't overreacting, maybe it seemed like that because most russians act like emotionless robots/ cold fish.
Irina Generalova oh they sure did. Russian food is amazing
@@diamondrosepheonix6634 stfu
The chippest set of russian food has been chosen. If you'd like to try genuine Russian food you should try ural pelmeni, pancakes with black or red caviar, pancakes with marmalade, meat cake, fish cake, beluga, sevruga, uha (fish soup) etc. I've tried everything from the list and can say it was absolutely fantastic.
I'm not even Russian but I am offended by the way they are reacting to it
Mary Lin im from russia thank you so much for understanding
Mary Lin you are absolutely correct. I too am not a russian but they shouldnot comment so rude.
Salo actually goes perfect in freezing season. Spicy mustard, rye bread and a piece of salo. And you’re warm after -30C outside!
This is the best comment ❤
i am from ukraine and i love buzz feed, and especially watching americans try diffrent wierd foods, and i always thought that those nation ate some weird stuff, but today i same them eat "bizarre" russian food and i food it really funny, because this in not bizarre for me at all these are the things i actually eat pretty much everyday, it really fun to see these cultural differences :) thanks for a fun video
I like all of the above except
I hate it.
Nadiya Dzhydzhora True! And these foods are not the most bizarre, don't you agree? :)
Лунтик how dare u ruin my childhood with that profile pic
шуба is my fav
What American foods do you think are bizarre?
Lena Hecht
I feel like Americans don't like any fuckin fish. Unless it's fried.
Or in stick form
Generally no, we don't. Unless you're from an area that has cultural ties to fish cuisine (I'm from Minnesota, have enjoyed lutefisk) it's not common to eat fish here.
here in america we actually love fish!! especially in the coast
I'm an American and I love all types of fish. I eat baked golden pompano all the time
christopher corvino Most people eat rolls in the states.
Omg but herring under coat???? God I'm like 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤 give me some of that deliciousness!!!!!
Kholodets is a Godly creation.
@@Gabriel-he6ih hahahahaaha xD you brave soul :D
Kholodets is a very specific and few people really like it and you eat it with a bread.
-----
what is so specific?. it is chicken/pork./еtс soup=bouillon made as jello. actually it is very healthy, AND 100X times better than burnt meat Americans like to so much!
How can they now like this? RusSIAN FOOD IS SO GOOD😭👍🏻
They should have gave them borsh, alivye ( salad) and there are lots of other better stuff
borsch is Ukrianian - so is holodets, I believe!
I don't know. Maybe because everyone has different tastes? -_-
They really should have had alivye, its nice
+TheZaz969 omg i definetely agree
You actually forgot hematogen and some kind of Russian cool soup called okroshka
I LOVE THAT SOUP
Okroshka is the meaning of life.
Yeah, okroshka with fresh radishes, that's the best in summer :3
yass okroshka
Oh, I love okroshka.....omg
Frankly I'm russian and it's been 30 years eating Russian food and I can't stand kholodets. The texture!
And all the other food is so easy to prepare wrong, I'm pretty certain it was prepared wrong.
I think it's safe to say that, because they liked the pre-made (tomatoes and salo) and were very unhinged on the salad and entree - I don't think the shuba was any good. And kholodets IS a bizarre food.
Because, I mean, soviet food was state-designed by actual food labs, it was made to be good for people from Latvia all the way to Chita, all walks of life.
kholodets
----
it is chicken/pork soup made as jello!! what is wrong ?
We just don't like it.
I ate all of this yesterday for thanksgiving, lol
Eliza Avetisyan lol XD
1. Salo is consumed the wrong way here -- it should be sliced as thin as possible
2. It's not Russian food, it's mostly Soviet food, so now it's the food of approx 15 countries!
Illarion Kovalchuk "sliced as thin" it's good but you forgot the onion. I like frozen grated salo with chopped herbs and garlic. It's very tasty.
perfect!
Illarion Kovalchuk i know this is very ignorant but arnt the ussr, soviet, russia the same thing
Stepashka The Dwarf "Ukrainians" are Russians, there are no actual "Ukrainians"
There are no Russians. Russia was, is and will always be a part of Ukraine.
We have all of these in Romania too. Except the herring. Curious...
Sah Matn Yeah we do, watching this I kinda knew what things tasted like, lol
Sah Matn It's so weird watching people taste for the first time the food i have grown up with XD like pickled tomatoes. i never realized they dont have them in america. they are delicious XD
+Sah Matn What is curious?
They didn't call it the "Soviet Union" for nothing. Possibly why Romania and Russia share some cultural staples
+Misha Metrikin lol great wikipedia history info search you got there. Us Romanians are culturally and ethnically the same as russians as far back as the slavic migration in the balkans in the 10th century. We have been culturally the same before and after the russian invasion of ww2.
same in Serbia....
Me being Russian : 😑 that’s the food I eat almost every das ...
I live in a country that has a border with Russia (in Europe), our culture is mixed with Russia, cause until 1990, we were a part of Russia. And our history mixes, so all that food are somewhat our traditional food too, and it's not as bad as they or you think.
Is that Estonia by any chance?
+Oliver Benson I think she is talking about Ukraine
Annija Valtasa that is literally me :))) I'm from Romania, where are u from?
Merryjr Crafts and Gaming, no, I'm from Latvia
I have been to latvia not too long ago. It's really nice there ^^
Sergey Popov So, we will begin.

Can I have the receipe for the pickled tomatoe?
2511Lizzybusy oh, they vary much. Some people like them more sweet, some more spicy and sour. One of the classic recipes goes this way:
2 kilos of fresh tomatoes, 1,2 l of water, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1 tablespoon of vinegar and salt, additionally - 5 grains of black pepper, some garlic and laurel leaves, some dill for your taste.
Maria Stark Thank you very much ^-^
2511Lizzybusy Just be sure you get organic ones (whatever, less chemicals). The usual ones just got spoiled I tried one time.
2511Lizzybusy No, sorry... Top grandma's secret ;)
I'm pretty sure they disliked some of the dishes only because they weren't cooked right. If my grandma made them, these guys would have been ecstatic.
i've tried everythign except for the pickled tomato. they are all FINE except for the pig fat coz i don't like fat.
i'm surprised by these people's reactions. russian food is not bad at all. i also dont' understand why they need to put the word "bizarre" in the title of the video when they don't for food of other nations. every culture has some weird food!
+mlsi, they have done a video with bizarre American foods as well, calm your spirit.
Barbara Danley the point is they can talk about their food as much as they want, but they shouldn't be so disrespectful to our culture.
True! Also, where was the borscht and golobci?
Sharif S who eats bologna with butter?? Mayo, cheese, cucumbers - sure, but butter?
Gotta agree they have missed a lot, and I mean a lot of Russian food. And even though they said (its also popular in Ukraine) about salo it is still wrong
LinaElvie I meen bologna sandwitch - with bread, its not tasty without butter :)
hello its lina Galushki, draniki, vareniki, yep they definately need ukrainian episode, allthough this cuisine is not that weird.
2:10 lmao wrong, the capitol food was extravagant and decorative and full of many different types of flavours and foods. Not that that's not fancy or anything, but it ain't decorative or over the top, so it isn't capitol food
what about silotka? (basically fish in oil) also, its fun to see how americans react to your childhood/every novi godd
it made me a little sad to watch them trash my favorite foods😞
I am American and I don't think silotka sounds weird. Groceries here sell canned fish in oil (usually olive oil).
Because they don't want to get drunk. Since its tradition to drink vodka with the fish.
Being Russian, I could hardly contain my laughter during this 😂😂😂
omg same xD
+Anna 17 same, i saw shouba at the beginning and was like mmmmmmmm yes!
+Anna 17 omg, the salo!!!!!!!! The best thing ever. I am sosad we don't have in Brazil :(
poopcan TBS said the name using a fake name nd a naked photo (y)
+Anna 17 I'm American and really enjoyed visiting Russia, but I wasn't a fan of Kvass.
Being Russian, I have food like this all that time.
Personally I hate when people exagerate trying new things. Yeah, its different, but that doesnt mean its bad!
Frank Dam Exactly! Most of the food they tried are very good. My babushka used to make these dishes for me all the time when I was little.
Frank Dam I remember that video. Yeah, I thought that was a very ignorant comment.
I'm curious why Americans dislike Russians? I don't recall them doing anything to England i have no disrespect for them but for some reason quite a lot of Americans dislike Russians
To me all of those foods have childhood memories and I love all of them, watching these people react is so funny!
my russian brothers and sisters, please calm down. this is buzzfeed.
whatch any other video of any other person tasting any other foreign cuisine and relax. these guys are the least politically provoking people on earth.
tastes differ, deal with it
by the way, being russian and respecting traditions and history and all... i can't take even a bite of kholodets or herring salad.
Sounds like you're not really Russian
Potato :D luckily of not... i really am )
ah i am too, i was born in volsk and all that stuff, my favorite dishes are borscht and blini
Potato :D totally agree ) homemade pelmeni as well!
Salo is not *also popular in Ukraine - it's actually ukrainian food ( same as borsh ) Ukrainians even joke that it's like "ukrainian sacred food" )))
Maria Bykova Actually Salo is Italian food.
It’s like claiming water is an English drink and all other nationalities are stealing it. Many cultures eat salo and developed it by themselves
+Ken Sears Also, I bet they used the wrong kind of herring.
+Ken Sears selyodka pod shuboi**
I live in Ukraine and everybody around me calls it seld' pod shuboi!
this is so fun because all of my friends and i are obsessed with this food, it is like really tasty 😂 and by the way, why there was no buckwheat kasha? I heard that if you are not used for it since the childhood it tastes horrible to you. that would be fun to watch)
Sofie M KASHA! That is so good, especially with butter
I hated kasha (buckwheat) the first time I tried but after awhile it got really good
FINALLY !!!!! ITS ABOUT DAMN TIME
Herring under the Coat tastes progressively better the more Vodka you had prior to eating it. It is a dish made to sober up after all.
Salo is not popular in Russia at all. I think typical russian man eats it about 1 time at year or less. But really great russian dishes are bliny, pelmeny, solyanka, okroshka, shashlyk and of course caviar butterbrots. That is taste of Russia.
You're not right. Salo is a usual food, it's lying in my regrigirator right now. Salo with black bread is a good appetizer for vodka, for example.
As a northern european, I don't understand why you would call this bizarre. It's just food.
Ещё посмотрите тут - th-cam.com/video/ndm6QyXhGMc/w-d-xo.html&feature=iv&src_vid=YvGDafHwVjo&annotation_id=annotation_897682111....
MOR LOK
Sádlo is not supposed to be tough. It's soft and smearable, because that's how you eat it. Smeared on bread, slightly salted.
Just because it is Russian doesn't mean it was made well. I suspect these dishes were cafeteria grade slop, especially from the look of them - with the exception of the salo, which is also the one thing that many liked.
I love how Ashley made a Hunger Games reference!
Yaasss
Seriously, that was fun.
Drink Vodka next time!
CuteBoyFly the missing ingredient
Russian vodka, drink it everyday, you'll be ok
yay alcoholics
CuteBoyFly oh yes, and play on balalaika!
1:51 I'm eating it right now hehe its so good i used to hate it but the more i ate it the more i started to love it :) love ya mom thank u
