I am 69 and am not marching anywhere. I just like learning about percussion and if I lived alone would get a tenor set just for drill. I have been working on snare drum for a couple years and enjoy the sense of success. Thanks for a good video that even an old and slow guy can get.
i'm the only person in my section who can play tenors decently, but unfortunately my school does not have a drumline, so it's basically a waiting game for me! I've been looking for a good way to get better at tenors and i've found it here, so thank you!
My school just recently got rid of front ensemble this year because they wanted everyone to march and I got immediately bumped up to tenors because that's what I originally tried out for and I have no prior experience and missed out on all of the previous drumline classes because they just made this decision. This is really going to help me out, thank you!
My private lesson teacher assigned me to watch this and it’s been rather helpful. I’m in eighth grade (aiming to make tenorline next year) and I think this video is a great intro to the art of tenor playing. Nice job on the vid; I can’t wait until the rest of the episodes release!
i play alto sax in concert and marching band, and alto and soprano in a sax ensemble, but i’m joining my schools competitive winter drumline this year and will hopefully be playing tenors! this series seems perfect for me starting out, thanks so much!
Dude same, I play Alto. I probably won't get tenor next year though, I was bass this year (my first year) but I have a tenor pad and I'm hoping to get it within the next 2 years!
I watched this series in 2019. It’s been a long journey. Thank you for helping me start this journey, I went from watching this series with toilet paper on a table as the “drums” to where I am today.
I know you apologized for the sound quality of this video but I actually love the way the tenors sound in that room. Close, Lo-fi, the depth of the tone and overtones actually comes through in a nice way.
My dream is to march for blue coats tenor line right now I’m in 9th grade and play bass thanks so much it’s hard but I will get better thanks 🙏 you inspired me to not give up hope people say I will never be good but maby if I try I can ✌🏻😏 I LOVE TENORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad it has helped! If you can at least get through video #3 or #4 over the summer, that will be a tremendous help for the upcoming season. Congratulations, and best of luck!
Thank you for this tutorial. I want to teach a band in elementary school but i dont know to use the tenor and how I can incorporate to bass drum and lyre/xylophone.
I’m in my highschool drumline for tenors. And I marched marching season + indoor this year as a freshman. What do you suggest for me to watch/do to get my crossovers clean/effortless?
I’m literally watching this to learn how to play the tenor I’ve never even played percussion I’m a woodwind I’m watching this to join my schools drum line
Our tenors left this year at semester and i’m the next oldest in section and i’m rumored to take over after only playing bass drum since i got in band (and a little snare)
Hello! I'm currently a flute player in my highschool band and was interested in playing marching quads in my spare time (mostly for fun, not anything professional). I found marching quads on Ebay for around four-hundred dollars. Do you think they would have good quality?
It's hard to say without seeing the specific brand and condition, but there are definitely some good deals out there. I'd recommend showing a band teacher at school and seeing if they think it's a good purchase. Even if the set is worn, anything you can get will be good for practicing!
Can you recommend a good video or video series that does concentrate on learning to read the music for tenors? My son played bass last year for his high school marching band. This summer he went to non-required practices and put in the work and earned a spot on tenors. (His school uses the 5 drum tenors.) He auditioned and was selected. However now he is having serious misgivings. He does not know how to read the music very well. He mostly learned and passed the audition by memorizing the songs. Now that he is on the line and having to learn new music he is feeling like he is in over his head and is thinking of quitting band all together. (He also says that all the other tenor players are seniors, so next year he will be a junior and the oldest tenor player. His band expects the older students to help the newer students. So he is feeling overwhelmed by the thought of having to teach new kids how to learn tenors from bass or whatever. I am looking for a good series of videos that will help him learn to read the tenor music and gain confidence in it.
Ok I’m a freshman right now and I got put on bass drum on my drumline, don’t get me wrong it’s fun but I think I enjoy being on the drumline more than playing my actual drum. I was originally aiming for snare but I don’t know how that will go but I’m still making it my first choice then tenor my second. The thing I am mostly worried about for tenors is the weight, my bass drum weighs about 20 pounds. How much do the tenors weigh and is there any thing that I should really know about it.
James Christian thank you, I asked some of the upper classman today and they said they way about 35-45 pounds that is definitely heavier than my drum but I think I can do it. I have been watching your series on tenors. Do you have any more tips on tenors, on how to improve faster or how to deal with all of the weight. By the way I am a 5 foot girl and I’m small for my age.
If you have to carry them, go easy on your back! (And work on your core strength!) If you’re mostly putting them on a stand, deeper drums tend to have a fuller sound. But it’s honestly a matter of preference and what works for the ensemble you’re performing with.
It is 2:30 AM right now, this video is in my recommended. I just don’t have the time or stamina to dive into this series at the moment, I will return!
