How I Went from "Okay" to 7-Time Tenor Drum Champion (or The Value of Sharing What You Know)
James tells his story about growing up in a small town with a humble band program, studying with rudimental drumming master Rick Beckham, the value of investing in others' lives by sharing what you know and love, and taking advantage of opportunities when they present themselves.

    Can you recommend a good video or video series that does concentrate on learning to read the music for tenors? My son played bass last year for his high school marching band. This summer he went to non-required practices and put in the work and earned a spot on tenors. (His school uses the 5 drum tenors.) He auditioned and was selected. However now he is having serious misgivings. He does not know how to read the music very well. He mostly learned and passed the audition by memorizing the songs. Now that he is on the line and having to learn new music he is feeling like he is in over his head and is thinking of quitting band all together. (He also says that all the other tenor players are seniors, so next year he will be a junior and the oldest tenor player. His band expects the older students to help the newer students. So he is feeling overwhelmed by the thought of having to teach new kids how to learn tenors from bass or whatever. I am looking for a good series of videos that will help him learn to read the tenor music and gain confidence in it.

    Okay, here’s my rudiment count with a few “maybes”: 1. double stroke 2. quadruple stroke (if you count it as a rudiment) 3. flam accent 4. flam tap 5. flam paradiddle 6. Swiss army triplet 7. flam drag 8. inverted flam tap 9. flam ratamacue 10. cheese accent 11. cheese invert 12. cheese paradiddle 13. flam five-stroke roll 14. flam six-stroke roll (old style with the sixth note as a single at the end) 15. flam five-stroke paradiddle 16. flam (if you count it separately since it’s included in the rudiments above) 17. cheese (if you count it separately since it’s included in the rudiments above) So 14 definite rudiments with 3 “maybes.”

    I am 52. Will be 53 next month. I graduated HS in 1989. I played so tense throughout HS & college. I did earn my BS in MUED in 1994. Chickened out of my first job interview. Self esteem issues. I fell into law enforcement and will retire fully in 2028. I have been playing for right at 41 years now. I credit John Wooten and Bill Bachman for helping me to relax and become much better than i ever have been. I did not physically take lessons from them, however, I watched their videos soaked up what i could from them that way. I play drums at church and sing in choir to continue my music.

    Du duts ( exercise), flam accents, flam taps, flam drags, flam 5 stroke rolls, inverted flam taps. I will have listen again to get more. 😊 Swiss triplets...cheeses...drag a diddles, flam a diddle, flam 5 a diddle, cheese a diddle (drag a diddle with first part a cheese instead of a drag).

      You’re in luck! I made a seven-part series several years ago. (Note: On the first few videos, I had just moved and didn’t have the best audio equipment at the time, but I figured those who wanted the information would care more about the content than the production values. I may redo the audio at some point. But in the meantime, all the videos are captioned.) Check out the whole series here: th-cam.com/play/PLvaO7KTSClqM_IdAJGMl1K-EqjXeIp7Hd.html&si=HHceRsurr3CcIUZW

    9:06 That's the worst sweep technique I've ever heard in my entire life. And I've been doing this 25 years.

    • @RudimentalUniversity
      @RudimentalUniversity ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s room for different technique approaches, but some are better than others. Feel free to link to a video of yourself doing it better so I can learn from you.

    • @morningorangejuice
      @morningorangejuice ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RudimentalUniversity There are certainly room for different techniques, and you don't need a video from me, you can watch literally any other tenor player video on the planet and they focus on the X Y axis and not breaking the wrist and actively pushing towards early tendonitis. Also, there is a clear issue in sound quality. Different approach to the two notes will always produce a different sound rather than two even strokes from the same approach. It's simple biology and physics.

    • @RudimentalUniversity
      @RudimentalUniversity ปีที่แล้ว

      @@morningorangejuice Most tenor drummers rebound the second note of their doubles, so the second note is clearly weaker than the first. This approach allows you control the velocity with more consistency. The goal is greater consistency of sound. This whole series begins by focusing on the X- and Y-axes and not breaking at the wrist, so it’s possible you’re misunderstanding. This doesn’t replace the X- and Y-axes-it works in harmony with it. Also, it’s an arm rotation, just like on marimba, not a wrist break.

    • @morningorangejuice
      @morningorangejuice ปีที่แล้ว

      You are literally rotating the wrist, it's a technque change that is completely unecessary. Play good clean doubles and the second note will be consistent in volume as long as you properly engage the fingers in the diddle. You say your goal is consistency in sound, yet I don't hear it in your video. Ok, I've said my piece. Good luck.@@RudimentalUniversity

      Lots of things you can do, and one reply won’t do justice to the topic. But this is one thing you can try… This may sound odd, but one thing I’ve found helpful is to dribble a basketball back and forth between your hands and really get a feel for how much pressure you have to use. Then switch to a pair of drum sticks and apply approximately the same amount of pressure and force. Keep repeating the process until you feel like you’re playing more relaxed. Good luck to you!
